OVERHEAD CONDUCTORS OVERHEAD CONDUCTORS Aluminium has been in the service of electric power transmission for about a century. The main reason for using Aluminium is its conductivity per unit weight. The soaring prices of copper have also placed Aluminium asan indispensable metal for high voltagetransmission. These are the reasons that Aluminium Conductors, whether they are all Aluminium conductors (AAC) or Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) have becomethe choice of designers and users. In order to eliminate some major deficiencies in ACSR Conauctor, viz, heavy weight and bimetallic corrosion, All Aluminium Alloy Conductors are now extensively used, These Conductors have mechanical and electrical properties similar 10 ACSR, but at the same tire eliminate the deficiencies of heavy weight and corrosion. ‘The following important differences between Aluminium and Copper Conductors for distribution lines must be recognize 1, Due to their high strength/weight ratio, steel cored Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Conductors aro more prone 10 vibration leading in severe cases to breakages of binders and conductors. This problem can be mitigated by restricting the conductor tension, the commonly accepted practice being to limit the still-air at 40°F to 20-25% of the conductor breaking load 2. For equal electrical conductivity, Aluminium conductors are about 30% larger in diameter and this increases the wind and ice loading, thereby necessitating stronger supports. 3, Steel - Cored Aluminium may be expected to have a shorter life than copper. 4, Aluminium oxide dust is highly abrasive and hence, any relative movement for oxide between the conductor and the pin insulator groove, can produce a serious and rapicly cumulative sawing action. Aluminium conductors on pin insulator lines must, therefore, be wound with great care and If stirrups are used they must be carefully fitted to the insulator. FITTINGS Connections are at the crux of the problem in substituting Aluminium for copper for overhead lines, and many troubles in the past have been directly revealed due to the use of unsuitable fittings. tis not easy to maintain permanently satisfactory connection of the bolted type with Aluminium Conductors, particularly where they are subject to heavy cyclic variation of current. On heavily loaded transmission lines, compression type connectors have provided the satisfactory solution but generally speaking, distribution lines are not run to as high a specific current loading as transmission lines, and itis felt that this factor will keep bolted type joint troubles within acceptable limits. For Aluminium | Aluminium connections on tow voltage line and services and lignt 11 kv lines where currents are relatively small, bolted type connectors are being used. Aluminium Alloy line tapes are mostly usedas analternaiive, particularly on the large conductors. Now-a-days some supply undertakings have adopted compression connectors for All- Aluminium low voltage lines and Alur ium Alloy 11 kv lines. These compression connections, which include bi-metallic connections, produce very satisfactory electrical joints and apart irom the initial cost of the tools, are cheaper than linetapes. 81 CONCLUSIONS 1. Aluminium conductors in their various forms can be satisfactorily substituted for copper for overhead distribution lines, with appreciable economics atfirst cost. 2. Forlow voltage lines, AACis the most suitable alternative that gives satisfactory service. 3. In case of high voltage lines, the choicelies with either ACSR or AAC. 4. For special purposes where very high tensile strength is required, e.g. reconducting existing stee! conductor lines, steel - cored high tensile Aluminium alloy conductors are practical and economical. A largeincrease inthe electrical capacity of the line is possible in this way. 5. Electrical connections are a vital factor in successful use of Aluminium as conductor material 82 All Aluminium Stranded Conductors AAC General : Properties : These conductors are formed by several wires of Electrical Conductors Grade Aluminium wires. The wires are stranded in concetric layers. All the wires inthe conductor have the same nominal diameter. Compared to copper these conductors have a great economical advantage on the low voltage overhead lines. Applications: Low voltagelines. Linking bridges between the dead-end clamps of the high vollage lines installed with Aluminium conductors steel reinforced. High voltage busbars at the sub-stations. Normally these conductors have a galvanized steel core of 1,7,19 or 37 wires, surrounded by concentric layers of Aluminium wires. The diameters of the steel and Aluminium wires can be same or different, By varying the relative proportions of Aluminium and steel ratios, theideal conductor can be produced for any particular application. In this way, ifa high tensile strength conductor is required, the number of steel wires can be increased until the required strength is reached. When a conductor with high current carrying capacity and a comparatively low strenath is required, this is attained with a high Aluminium content. In comparison with Copper, these conductors have considerable technical and economical advantages in the installation of overhead lines. Its characteristics, and low weight, combined with its high breaking strength, are gathered which makes it possible to have large span runs, without having to revert to excessive mechanical stresses or to heavy metallic towers, Due to greater diameter of the conductors, electric losses by the corona effect are greatly reduced. By making use of these properties economical electric energy transmissionis attained at very high voltages and distances. Overhead lines of medium, high and very high voltages. 87 Design : ACSR conductors can be supplied, conforming to the following standards USA ASTMB232M British BS215-Part2 German DIN-48204 IEC IEC 209 Aluminium Conductors Steel Reinforced - ACSR As por ASTM B 232M Code Nominal | Nuniber& nominal [ Approx. Alloy Conductors - AAAC General : Properties : Design : 2 These conductors are formed by several wires of Aluminium Alloy, strandedin concentriclayers. Allindividual wires have same nominal diameter. The basic composition of this Alloy pertains to the Aluminium- Magnesium-Silicon group, which is also known in Europe as Alemelec or Aldery. After their drawing they must undergo a thermal treatment at a temperature of approximately 170'C. Compared to Aluminium, the wires of this Alloy have a double tensile strength. Its electrical conductivity is 15% lower (53% instead of 61%) and the weightis the same. All Aluminium Alloy conductors can be supplied, conforming to the followingstandards :- USA ASTM B 399M British BS 3242 German.
