1.
When two normal 6-sided dice are thrown and the two numbers are added together,
there are 36 different possibilities 3. Let's find the probability for each case:

a) Probability of getting a total of 4: To get a total of 4, the possible combinations are

(1, 3) and (2, 2). Thus, there are 2 favourable outcomes. The probability is calculated
by dividing the number of favourable outcomes by the total number of possibilities.
Therefore, the probability of getting a total of 4 is 2/36, which can be simplified to
1/18.

b) Probability of getting a number divisible by 4: To get a number divisible by 4, we

need the sum to be either 4 or 8. The favourable outcomes are (1, 3), (3, 1), (2, 2), (2,
6), (6, 2), (4, 4), and (5, 7). So, there are 7 favourable outcomes. The probability of
getting a number divisible by 4 is 7/36.
c) Probability of getting a number divisible by 2: A number is divisible by 2 if it is an
even number. The favourable outcomes are (1, 1), (1, 3), (1, 5), (2, 2), (2, 4), (2, 6), (3,
1), (3, 3), (3, 5), (4, 2), (4, 4), (4, 6), (5, 1), (5, 3), (5, 5), and (6, 2). There are 16
favourable outcomes. The probability of getting a number divisible by 2 is 16/36,
which can be simplified to 4/9.

d) Probability of getting a number divisible by 3: A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of

its digits is divisible by 3. The favourable outcomes are (1, 2), (1, 5), (2, 1), (2, 4), (3,
3), (3, 6), (4, 2), (4, 5), (5, 1), (5, 4), (6, 3), and (6, 6). So, there are 12 favourable
outcomes. The probability of getting a number divisible by 3 is 12/36, which can be
simplified to 1/3.

e) Probability of getting a number divisible by 6: A number is divisible by 6 if it is

divisible by both 2 and 3. From the previous cases, we know that the favourable
outcomes for both divisibility criteria are (2, 2) and (6, 6). Therefore, the probability
of getting a number divisible by 6 is 2/36, which can be simplified to 1/18.

2.
a) + b) Based on the investigation of the probabilities, we can make a conjecture
about the probability of getting a number divisible by n: The probability of getting a
number divisible by n is given by the formula p(n) = k/36, where k is the number of
favourable outcomes for the divisibility rule of n.

c) To investigate the truth of this conjecture, we can test it for different values of n.
For example, if n = 5, we find that there are 8 favourable outcomes (1, 4), (2, 3), (3,
2), (4, 1), (4, 6), (5, 5), (6, 4), and (6, 9). Thus, the probability of getting a number
divisible by 5 is 8/36, which simplifies to 2/9. This supports our conjecture.

d) However, it is important to note that the conjecture holds true only for values of
n that are greater than or equal to 2 and less than or equal to 12. This is because the
sum of the numbers on the two dice ranges from 2 to 12. If n is greater than 12, such
as 13, there are no favourable outcomes, so the probability would be 0.
