Chapter 1: Know Your Computer

IT Personalities

Vinton Gray Cerf


Vinton Gray Cerf is a famous American scientist who is known as the
‘father of the Internet’. He was born in America on June 23, 1943. His
contributions have been recognised repeatedly with honorary degrees
and awards. He was awarded with the A.M. Turing Award, the highest
honour in computer science. He has worked extensively on internet
working, including the design and implementation of the Internet’s basic
communication protocols, TCP/IP. He is well-known for his pioneering
work on networking.
Cerf is also working on the Interplanetary Internet, together with
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It will be a new standard to communicate
from planet to planet, using radio/laser communications that are tolerant
of signal degradation.

Seymour Papert
Seymour Papert was born on February 29, 1928 in Pretoria, South Africa.
He is a well known mathematician, computer scientist and an educator.
He is the inventor of the Logo programming language. Papert won a
Guggenheim fellowship in 1980, a Marconi International fellowship in
1981, the Software Publishers Association Lifetime Achievement Award
in 1994, and the Smithsonian Award from Computerworld in 1997.
