Indie Pop
Indie Pop
Indie pop originated from British post-punk music in the late 1970’s. It wasn’t until the
late 80’s that it became well known in the US. By the mid 1990’s, there were many indie
pop fans. Today indie pop is typically viewed as a certain style of music, but the
original meaning was a genre that included all kinds of unique styles created by artists
that didn’t produce in a studio and weren’t signed to a record label. That is why it’s
called indie music, because it is short for independent. Some of the first well known
indie pop bands were the “Go-Betweens” and “Beat Happening”.
What is Indie Pop…
The main instruments of indie pop are vocals, guitar and synthesizers. Along with
those, there are often bass, drums, and keyboard. Most of the time, indie pop has a
light tone and gives a sort of road trip vibe. “The majority of indie pop borrows not
only the stripped-down quality of punk, but also the sweetness and catchiness of
mainstream pop".
