B Read the information about how to be safe when trampolining.

On a trampoline, you should wear comfortable

clothes with no hard belts or zippers, and you must
take off your shoes. Also, if you have long hair, you
should tie it up. On a small trampoline, have only one
person on the trampoline at one time. Many injuries
happen when there are too many people bouncing,
especially if they’re not looking around. You should
start with small bounces and always practice stopping.
You can stop by bending your knees when you land.
If you want to jump higher, you should use your arms.
Throwing them up in the air will really help.

Now plan and write an instructional flyer for your friends at a trampoline party. Use headings,
imperatives, and bullet points. Make sure you include:
• A title and opening sentence
• Three things your friends will or won’t need
• Six things your friends should do

Test Reading Unit 1

Carly’s First Game

“Carly, you’re on next!” said Coach Slater.
Carly pushed herself off the bench and fixed her knee pads. She quickly
strapped on her helmet. Carly’s mouth was suddenly very dry. Time for her
first real game.
When Carly joined the inline hockey team that summer, it was a way to
get in shape and to take part in something after school. Skating and joking around with the others
on her team was fun. Stopping for cold drinks on the way home was even better.
But now, looking at the other team charging around, sticks in hand, Carly was nervous. There
didn’t seem to be too many smiles out there on the rink. What if she let her team down? Nobody
would thank her. Couldn’t Coach bring on someone else?
Carly waited for a stop in play and for the referee to signal for a player change. Then she skated
onto the rink. She could hear her mom and dad cheering her name from the stands. Her legs felt
weak, her stomach turned.
Well, this is it, thought Carly. She swallowed and faced the other team. Carly waited for the referee
to drop the puck.
