Section D

23 Read the following and answer any four questions: [4]

The reproductive cycle in female primatesis called the menstrual cycle. One ovum
is released during the middleof each menstrual cycle. The cycle starts with the
menstrual phase when menstrual flow occurs and it lasts for 3 - 5 days. The
menstrual flow results due to the breakdown of the endometrial lining of the
uterus and its blood vessels which form a liquid that comes out through the
vagina. The menstrual phase is followed by the follicular phase, the primary
follicles in the ovary grow to become a fully mature Graafian follicle. Both LH and
FSH attain a peak level in the middle of the cycle. The ovulatory phase is followed
by the luteal phase during which the remaining parts of the Graafian follicle
transform. During pregnancy, all events of the menstrual cycle stop and there is
no menstruation.

Ovulation in the human female normally takes place during the menstrual cycle

1. at the mind secretory phase

2. just before the end of the secretory phase

3. at the beginning of the proliferative phase

4. at the end of the proliferative phase

Immediately after ovulation, the mammalian egg is covered by a membrane

known as

1. chorion

2. zona pellucida

3. corona radiata

4. vitelline membrane

Which one of the following events are correctly matched with the time period in a
normal menstrual cycle?

1. Release of egg: 5th day

2. Endometrium regenerates: 5 – 10 days

3. Endometrium secretes nutrients for implantation: 11 – 18 days

4. Rise in progesterone level: 1 – 15 days

In the given figure identify the correct sequence

1. Primary follicle, Ovum, Corpus luteum, Graafian follicle

2. Corpus luteum, Graafian follicle, Primary follicle, Ovum

3. Primary follicle, Graafian follicle, Ovum, Corpus luteum

4. Corpus luteum, Primary follicle, Graafian follicle, Ovum

Assertion: The tertiary follicle further changes into the mature follicle or
Graafian follicle.

24 Read the following and answer any four questions: [4]

Each testicular lobule of testis contains one to three highly coiled seminiferous
tubules. Wall of each seminiferous tubule is formed of single layered germinal
epithelium. Majority of cells in this epithelium are cuboidal called male germ
cells. Study the transverse section of part of seminiferous tubule and answer the
following questions.

1. What is the characteristic of K?
