HarshaQuan VoltVarOptimization

The document discusses volt-var optimization in utility distribution systems using a primal-dual interior point method. It describes the motivation to optimize voltage control devices using advanced metering infrastructure. The simulation setup interfaces Python with OpenDSS to minimize losses and energy consumption by controlling capacitor banks through an optimization problem solved with the interior point method.

Motivation & Objective
• Motivation: Many utilities are focusing on achieving Volt-var Optimization (VVO)
to improve their operational efficiencies.
Advanced voltage control devices

• Objective: The objective of this project is to demonstrate the benefit of Volt-var

Optimization in a test system by controlling the capacitor banks.
• To fulfill the optimization, primal-dual interior point method (PDIPM) is used.
• For simulations, OpenDSS-Python interfacing is used.
Simulation Setup
• Previously, MATLAB is used to run the OpenDSS through COM interface. Analysis of results and
visualizations were done in MATLAB
• Present simulation setup uses Python 2.7 for analysis and visualizations

 Challenges:  Solutions:
• Complexity of non-linear equations. • Find the simplest way to model the problem.

• Poor solution convergence. • Update separately variables.

• Code does not run as expected. • Apply the algorithm in a simple system first.

• Ill-condition issue.
