Spelling Bee Words

5th grade
Primary school
1. lawyer
Definition: Someone whose job is to give advice to people about the law and speak for them in
court.
Example: Our lawyer thinks that we have a very good case.
2. English
Definition: The language that is spoken in the UK, the US.
Example: Do you speak English?
3. system
Definition: A set of organs or structures in the body.
Example: The nervous system.
4. compassionately
Definition: In a way that shows compassion.
Example: She will give advice compassionately.
5. musical
Definition: Related to or connected with music.
Example: Mozart's musical compositions include symphonies and operas.
6. liquid
Definition: A substance, such as water that is not solid or a gas and that can be poured easily.
Example: Saliva is a liquid secreted by glands in or near the mouth.
7. string
Definition: (a piece of) strong, thin rope made by twisting very thin threads together, used for
fastening and tying things.
Example: When you pull the strings, the puppet's arms and legs move.
8. dessert
Definition: Sweet food eaten at the end of a meal.
Example: For dessert there's apple pie or fruit.
9. bubbles
Definition: A ball of gas that appears in a liquid, or a ball formed of air surrounded by liquid that
floats in the air.
Example: I love champagne - I think it's the bubbles that make it so good.
10. Maths
Definition: The study of numbers, shapes, and space using reason and usually a special system
of symbols and rules for organizing them.
Example: Though the maths is very clearly explained and illustrated.
11. spotlight
Definition: A lamp whose beam can be directed, or a circle of light produced by such a lamp.
Example: The senator has been in the spotlight recently since the revelation of his tax frauds.
12. humble
Definition: Not proud or not believing that you are important.
Example: He's very humble about his success.
13. excited
Definition: Very enthusiastic and eager.
Example: They were excited about the prospect.

14. beak
Definition: A bird's horny projecting jaws; a bill.
Example: Birds use their beaks to pick up food.
15. guru
Definition: A religious leader or teacher in the Hindu or Sikh religion.
Example: A lifestyle guru.
16. salty
Definition: Tasting of salt or containing a lot of salt.
Example: This bacon is too salty for me.
17. sandstone
Definition: A type of rock formed from sand.
Example: A soft, yellow or red rock, often used as a building material.
18. minerals
Definition: A valuable or useful chemical substance that is formed naturally in the ground.
Example: A mineral supplement.
19. statue
Definition: An object made from a hard material, especially stone or metal, to look like a person or
animal.
Example: The statue of the dictator was toppled over by the crowds.
20. unique
Definition: Being the only existing one of its type or, more generally, unusual, or special in some
way.
Example: Each person's genetic code is unique.
21. thrilled
Definition: Extremely happy about something.
Example: I was thrilled that so many people turned up to the party.
22. equality
Definition: The right of different groups of people to have a similar social position and receive the
same treatment.
Example: equality between the sexes.
23. spicy
Definition: Containing strong flavours from spices.
Example: Do you like spicy food?
24. servant
Definition: A person who is employed in another person's house, doing jobs such as cooking and
cleaning, especially in the past.
Example: His father's family lived in a big house with servants.
25. stallion
Definition: An adult male horse that is used for breeding.
Example: Flemish stallions with Scottish draft mares.
26. flowering
Definition: The action of producing flowers.
Example: The clematis can be grown to coincide with the flowering of the roses.
27. sentence
Definition: A group of words, usually containing a verb that expresses a thought in the form of a
statement, question, instruction, or exclamation and starts with a capital letter when written.
Example: 'Bob' is the subject of the sentence 'Bob threw the ball'.
28. swamp
Definition: (an area of) very wet, soft land.
Example: An alligator-infested swamp.

29. collection
Definition: A group of objects of one type that have been collected by one person or in one place:
Example: A private art collection.
30. family
Definition: A group of people who are related to each other, such as a mother, a father, and their
children.
Example: This movie is good family entertainment.
31. basement
Definition: A part of a building consisting of rooms that are partly or completely below the level of
the ground.
Example: Our kitchenware department is in the basement.
32. cotton
Definition: The threads that grow around the seeds of a tall plant grown especially in the US,
China, and South Asia.
Example: A bale of cotton.
33. emergency
Definition: Something dangerous or serious, such as an accident, that happens suddenly or
unexpectedly and needs fast action in order to avoid harmful results.
Example: How would disabled people escape in an emergency?
34. sneaky
Definition: Doing things in a secret and unfair way.
Example: A sneaky plan.
35. reproduction
Definition: The process of having babies, producing young, or producing new plants.
Example: Sexual reproduction serves to create genetic variety.
36. understand
Definition: To know the meaning of something that someone says.
Example: She explained the whole idea again, but I still didn't understand.
37. nomad
Definition: A member of a group of people who move from one place to another rather than living
in one place all of the time.
Example: a tribe of Somalian desert nomads.
38. evaporation
Definition: The process of a liquid changing to a gas, especially by heating.
Example: Fruit juice is concentrated through evaporation.
39. brother
Definition: A man or boy with the same parents as another person.
Example: Do you have any brothers and sisters?
40. mysterious
Definition: Strange, not known, or not understood.
Example: He died in mysterious circumstances.
41. wooden
Definition: Made of wood.
Example: They ate at a long wooden table.
42. official
Definition: If a piece of information is official, it has been announced publicly with authority.
Example: Their engagement is now official.
43. feather
Definition: One of the many soft, light things that cover a bird's body, consisting of a long, thin,
central part with material like hairs along each side.
Example: The bird has grey feathers with a lighter collar.
44. fertilization
Definition: The action of spreading a natural or chemical substance on land or plants, in order to
make the plants grow well.
Example: Regular fertilization is necessary to support the growth of a tomato plant.
45. nothing
Definition: Not anything.
Example: There's nothing in the drawer.
46. swoop
Definition: To move very quickly and easily through the air, especially down from a high position
in order to attack.
Example: The eagle swooped down to snatch a young rabbit.
47. ocean
Definition: A very large area of sea.
Example: These mysterious creatures live at the bottom of the ocean.
48. cross
Definition: A mark, object, or figure formed by two short intersecting lines or pieces.
Example: Cut a cross in the bark with a sharp knife.
49. frontier
Definition: A border between two countries.
Example: They lived in a town close to the frontier.
50. stamen
Definition: The male part of a flower, consisting of a thin stem that holds an anther.
Example: Their stamens were light green and the stigmas pink.
51. afternoon
Definition: The period that starts at about twelve o'clock or after the meal in the middle of the day
and ends at about six o'clock or when the sun goes down.
Example: It was a sunny afternoon.
52. jig
Definition: An energetic traditional dance of Great Britain and Ireland, or the music that is played
for such a dance.
Example: No jig is needed for this procedure, since there are no stringers.
53. rainwater
Definition: Water that has fallen as rain, rather than water that has come from a tap.
Example: I collect rainwater to water my plants.
54. grammar
Definition: (the study or use of) the rules about how words change their form and combine with
other words to make sentences.
Example: These books give very good grammar coverage.
55. tricky
Definition: If a piece of work or problem is tricky, it is difficult to deal with and needs careful
attention or skill.
Example: It's tricky to learn to ride a skateboard, but you never forget how.
56. filament
Definition: A thin thread or fibre of natural or artificial material.
Example: Toothbrushes should be replaced when the filaments become worn.
57. island
Definition: A piece of land completely surrounded by water.
Example: A Pacific island.
58. geographic
Definition: Relating to geography, or to the geography of a particular area or place.
Example: A geographic region.

59. cardboard
Definition: Material like very thick, stiff paper, usually pale brown in colour, used especially for
making boxes.
Example: A cardboard box.
60. anteater
Definition: a mammal that eats ants or termites and has a long nose and tongue and no teeth.
Example: Around 20 years ago, the giant anteater was seen for the last time.
61. explosion
Definition: The fact of something such as a bomb exploding.
Example: The fire was thought to have been caused by a gas explosion.
62. stigma
Definition: A strong feeling of disapproval that most people in a society have about something,
especially when this is unfair.
Example: There is no longer any stigma to being divorced.
63. test-tube
Definition: A small glass tube with one closed and rounded end, used in scientific experiments.
Example: These were placed in a plastic test -tube.
64. college
Definition: A university where you can study for an undergraduate (= first) degree.
Example: I met my husband when we were in college.
65. e-waste
Definition: Computers, phones, and other electronic products that are thrown away because they
are old, broken, etc.
Example: Environmentalists are urging companies to create more recycling programs to prevent
the surplus of e-waste in our landfills.
66. bass guitar
Definition: The bass guitar, electric bass or simply bass (/beɪs/) is the lowest-pitched member of
the guitar family.
Example: The electric bass guitar is usually the perfect instrument.
67. hungrily
Definition: In a way that shows you are hungry.
Example: They sat down and ate hungrily.
68. fossil fuel
Definition: Fuels, such as gas, coal, and oil, that were formed underground from plant and animal
remains millions of years ago.
Example: In recent times, agriculture has become a major fossil fuel energy user.
69. powder
Definition: A loose, dry substance that consists of extremely small pieces, usually made by
breaking something up and crushing it.
Example: A packet of white powder was found and police scientists are analysing it.
70. endless
Definition: Never finishing, or seeming never to finish.
Example: She recalled a tedious film with endless car chases.
71. husband
Definition: A married man considered in relation to his spouse.
Example: She's divorcing her husband.
72. chopstick
Definition: Thin sticks used for eating food in East Asia.
Example: She and Akira usually used forks, not chopsticks.
73. spicy
Definition: Containing strong flavours from spice.
Example: A spicy sauce.
74. litter
Definition: If things litter an area, they cover parts of it in an untidy way.
Example: Clothes littered the floor.
75. knife
Definition: A sharp tool or weapon for cutting, usually with a metal blade and a handle.
Example: I cut myself on a knife.
76. legacy
Definition: A situation that was caused by something from an earlier time.
Example: The war has left a legacy of hatred.
77. pollute
Definition: To make water, air, soil, etc. dirty or harmful.
Example: We need a fuel that won't pollute the environment.
78. climate
Definition: The weather conditions that an area usually has.
Example: A hot, dry climate.
79. immediately
Definition: Now or without waiting or thinking about something.
Example: You have to come home immediately.
80. siblings
Definition: A sister or brother.
Example: Younger siblings often falls on the oldest child.
81. became
Definition: Become available/rich/a writer, etc.
Example: They became great friends.
82. flock
Definition: A group of birds or sheep.
Example: A flock of geese.
83. recycle
Definition: To put used paper, glass, plastic, etc. through a process so that it can be used again:
Example: We recycle all our newspapers and bottles.
84. gravity
Definition: The force that makes objects fall to the ground or that pulls objects towards a planet or
other body.
Example: The laws of gravity.
85. slink
Definition: To move somewhere quietly so that no one will notice you.
Example: I caught him slinking out of the meeting.
86. asteroids
Definition: One of many large rocks that circle the sun.
Example: Scientists are hoping an asteroid will clue them in about early life on earth.
87. clothes
Definition: Things such as dresses and trousers that you wear to cover, protect, or decorate your
body.
Example: She usually wears smart clothes.
88. boycott
Definition: To refuse to buy a product or take part in an activity as a way of expressing strong
disapproval.
Example: People were urged to boycott the country's products.
89. continue
Definition: To keep happening, existing, or doing something, or to cause something or someone
to do this.
Example: Do you intend to continue (with) your studies?
90. ice-cream
Definition: A very cold, sweet food made from frozen milk or cream, sugar, and a flavour.
Example: Chocolate chip/vanilla ice- cream.
91. rough
Definition: Not even or smooth, often because of being in bad condition.
Example: It was a rough mountain road, full of stones and huge holes.
92. reuse
Definition: To use something again.
Example: To conserve resources, please reuse this carrier bag.
93. cousin
Definition: A child of a person's aunt or uncle, or, more generally, a distant (= not close) relation.
Example: My brother's wife and I both had babies around the same time, so the cousins are very
close in age.
94. alligator
Definition: A large reptile with a hard skin that lives in and near rivers and lakes in the hot, wet
parts of America and China. It has a long nose that is slightly wider and shorter than that of a
crocodile.
Example: There are sharks in the water, alligators on the island, and a hidden explosive in the
boat.
95. camouflage
Definition: the use of leaves, branches, paints, and clothes for hiding soldiers or military
equipment so that they cannot be seen against the area around them.
Example: Using smoke as (a) camouflage, the army advanced up the hill.
96. square
Definition: A flat shape with four sides of equal length and four angles of 90°.
Example: First draw a square.
97. pioneer
Definition: A person who is one of the first people to do something.
Example: A pioneer heart surgeon.
98. mimicry
Definition: The act of copying the sounds or behaviour of a particular person or animal, often in
order to make people laugh.
Example: The mockingbird is known for its mimicry of other birds.
99. display
Definition: To arrange something or a collection of things so that it can be seen by the public.
Example: There were photographs of all her children proudly displayed on the mantelpiece.
100. empire
Definition: A group of countries ruled by a single person, government, or country.
Example: The Holy Roman Empire.
101. mammals
Definition: Any animal of which the female feeds her young on milk from her own body. Most
mammals give birth to live young, not eggs.
Example: Humans, dogs, elephants, and dolphins are all mammals, but birds, fish, and
crocodiles are not.
102. restaurant
Definition: A place where meals are prepared and served to customers.
Example: We went to a little Italian restaurant and shared a pizza.
103. seedpods
Definition: A long, narrow part of some plants that contains the seeds and usually has a thick skin.
Example: The seed pods are slender and one to two inches long.
104. stars
Definition: A very large ball of burning gas in space that is usually seen from the earth as a point
of light in the sky at night.
Example: Stars twinkled above them as they lay on the hill.
105. glimpse
Definition: To see something or someone for a very short time or only partly.
Example: We glimpsed the ruined abbey from the windows of the train.
106. seed dispersals
Definition: In spermatophyte plants, seed dispersal is the movement, spread or transport of
seeds away from the parent plant.
Example: Seed Dispersal is a natural process of transporting seeds away from the parent plant.
107. drum kit
Definition: A set of drums and cymbals played by one person.
Example: This group uses electric guitars and drum kit.
108. twinkle
Definition: (of light or a shiny surface) to shine repeatedly strongly then weakly, as if flashing on
and off very quickly.
Example: The lights of the town twinkled in the distance.
109. hydrogen
Definition: A chemical element that is the lightest gas, has no colour, taste, or smell, and
combines with oxygen to form water.
Example: The rt-plasma is due to a novel reaction of atomic hydrogen.
110. matter
Definition: A situation or subject that is being dealt with or considered.
Example: Could I talk to you about a personal matter?
