F Foreword

Footboards / Operator’s Handbook

This Operator’s Handbook contains information about the Footboard mechanism fitted as a
customer option to Dennis Eagle Ltd. refuse collection vehicles.
The information in this Handbook must be used in conjunction with the Operator’s Handbooks for
the chassis, refuse collection bodywork and waste container lifting device, if fitted, to which the
footboard is attached.
This Handbook provides all the relevant information and data necessary to use the footboard and
carry out designated cleaning, maintenance and inspection procedures.

5222-FB1-D-GB-G1

Important:
Before operating the footboards.
It is most important that before operating the machine, all operators:
• have undertaken a recognised training course in the safe operation of the footboard.
• read, understand and observe all the instructions stated in Chapter 2 ‘Safety precautions’ of
this Handbook.
This Operator’s Handbook must always be kept in a safe place in the vehicle it was supplied with.

Introduction

1 Introduction 1.3 Description

1.1 Refuse collection vehicle

A Refuse Collection Vehicle (RCV) is used to collect
and transport domestic waste.
Some countries permit the fitting of footboards to
provide the facility for operatives to ‘ride’ on the rear
of the vehicle when collecting refuse.
The operation of the footboard is described in
Chapter 3 ‘How it works’.

1.2 CE certification
This machine is supplied in compliance with a CE 5224-FB1-D-GB-G2
certified type. Any change to specification of hardware
or controls is at the machine owner’s own risk and Fig. 1‑1 Footboard - Open system vehicle
may nullify CE certification status. Unauthorised
modification may also invalidate the warranty granted Footboards (1) and hand rails (2) provide the facility
with this product. If in doubt please consult Dennis for operatives to ride on the rear of the vehicle when
Eagle Ltd. collecting refuse, where legislation permits the use of
footboards.
The same footboards may be fitted to open system
vehicles and vehicles fitted with waste container lifting
device mechanisms.

Footboards (1) and hand rails (2) provide the facility
for operatives to ride on the rear of the vehicle when
collecting refuse, where legislation permits the use of
footboards.
On retractable versions, each footboard is hinged to a
frame fitted to the refuse collection body and is held in
either its open or stowed position by an hydraulic strut.
The presence of an operative on the footboard is
detected by a weight activated switch incorporated in
the footboard mounting structure (3).
When a sensor detects the presence of an operative
on the footboard, the refuse collection body control
system operates driver warnings and vehicle interlocks
to restrict the vehicle speed and prevent the selection
of reverse gear.
Operation of the driver warnings and vehicle interlocks
is described in Chapter 4 ‘Operator’s controls’ of this
Operator’s Handbook.

8 Maintenance

8.1 Routine maintenance

The footboard should be serviced only by skilled
engineers who have received the approved Dennis
Eagle Ltd. training and who are fully conversant with
its operation and safety procedures. To maintain the
mechanism at peak operational efficiency and good
condition the following servicing instructions should
be observed:
The footboard should be serviced at the same time as
the refuse collection body to which it is fitted and at
the intervals shown in the Maintenance section of the
Workshop Manual for the refuse collection bodywork
to which the footboard is fitted.
The service methods, techniques and safety
procedures for the footboard are described in the
Maintenance section of the Workshop Manual for the
refuse collection bodywork to which the footboard is
fitted.
Only approved replacement parts must be used
when servicing the vehicle as specified in the General
8 Specification Data section of the Workshop Manual for
the refuse collection bodywork to which the footboard
is fitted.
Failure to comply with maintenance schedules and
procedures could result in loss of efficiency, damage
and premature wear.

8.2 Operational maintenance

It is important that your machine is kept in good
working order.
Detailed maintenance requirements for the footboard
are documented in the maintenance section of the
Workshop Manual for the refuse collection bodywork
to which the footboard is fitted.
Before work starts, make sure that there is no
mechanical damage or wear evident in the footboard.
Carry out a ‘Daily safety check’ as described in
section 6.1 to check that all controls and interlocks are
working to specification before the vehicle is put into
service.
Any problems must be reported to supervision
immediately.

8.3 Weekly maintenance

1. Check that all warning and advisory labels are
present, complete, legible and clean (see ‘6.2
Warning and advisory labels’ on page 6-4).
2. Check the footboard, handrails and sensors for any
signs of undue wear and/or damage.
3. Report any findings to supervision.
