Read the text and answer the questions.
Ali is 11 years old. He has a spelling test every Monday morning. Ali sits at a table with two of
his best friends and four other children. He sometimes struggles to remember his spelling
words and feels nervous before he has to do the test.
Ali’s friends are good at spelling and he thinks that they are better than him.
This week, the spelling words are really tricky and Ali is worried he will not get many of them
correct. He studies hard for the test but is still not confident in his abilities.
Ali does the test but cannot concentrate because he is watching his friends writing the spelling
words down really quickly and effortlessly. This makes him feel really anxious and upset.
When they mark their tests Ali gets three out of ten correct. He feels really embarrassed. At
playtime, the other children that sit at his table – Abigail, Peter and Keerav – start to call him
names and say that he is stupid. They laugh at him and make fun of him.
Ali gets upset and starts crying. Ali’s best friend, George, pushes the other children
and shouts at them to stop. George gets into trouble because the teacher sees him
pushing the other children.

Stacey visits her dad every second weekend. When she goes there, and is left alone with her
stepmom, she gets really scared. Her stepmom is really mean to her and swears at her. She
tells Stacey that she is stupid. Once, her stepmother hit her with a wooden stick when she did
not clear the table fast enough after lunch. Stacey is scared and does not know what to do.
