2. Christ, the Rock, must first be smitten, 5. When we see the ripened harvest
That the living water flow; Of the golden countryside,
Without death the Spirit’s fulness We may know that many seeds have
Ne’er could dwell in man below. Fallen to the earth and died.
If with Christ we die completely, Ere the fruit of life may blossom,
Willing thus our all to lose, We must surely suffer death;
He will clothe us with His power If with Christ we’ve not been buried,
And to win the world will use. We’ll not feel the Spirit’s breath.
3. First the altar, then the fire, 6. Since it must be thus, I pray, Lord,
If no loss, there’ll be no gain; Help me go the narrow way;
If our all has not been offered, Deal with pride and make me willing
To the throne we’ll ne’er attain. Thus to suffer, Thee t’obey.
If to sacrifice we’re willing, I for greater power pray not,
All forsaking, God t’obey, Deeper death is what I need;
He to us will be committed All the meaning of the Cross, Lord,
And thru us His pow’r display. Work in me—for this I plead.
