SADC initiated several projects which aid in the development of the socio-economic situation in several
African regions. One such project was the Support to Industrialization and Productive Sectors (SIPS), this
initiative has not only contributed to the betterment of the policy, regulatory, and operational business
environment on a national and regional level but has also lent a helping hand in incrementing
sustainable way of production. Another program introduced by SADC to lend a helping hand to the
social-economic situation is the Trade Facilitation program which fluidified the interregional trades
through the implementation of the EU-SADC EPA. The SADC Dialogue Facility (SDF) also contributed to a
positive impact as this program aid in the exchange of dialogue between the different regions, thus
boosting cooperation to achieve several goals such as sustainable economic growth in different regions.
Furthermore, SADC is planning to build a railway from Mtwara Port to Liganga Iron Ore fields to ease
traveling and transportation. The last admirable project by SADC is the Lesotho Botswana Water
Transfer, which will allow people from Botswana to use that water for several purposes ranging from
irrigation to domestic use.
There are several areas in which SADC can focus however, the textile industry would be among the best
option in our modern world. The textile industry is thriving right now as clothes are one of our basic
needs and the modern generation is very fond of fashion. By investing in this kind of industry SADC will
help to generate employment and help improve the standard of living in some parts of Africa.
Nevertheless, this initiative may be hampered by the lack of resources. Another sector being part of
several people’s everyday life is the pharmaceutical industry. Nowadays medicines made their way into
every person’s house, thus there is a high demand for them. By focusing on this area SADC may easily
contribute to the betterment of the local economy as by investing in pharmaceuticals they may also
start exporting their products. Some African countries like Mauritius can easily benefit from it as the rate
of people suffering from chronic diseases is very high. However, SADC may run short on capital as the
production of medicines is a very costly one. These progresses will also help Africa to be more
competitive in the international trade market.
Regional value chains allow producers and service providers in developing countries like Africa to
experience the benefits there (access to raw materials and components, economies of scale in
production, expanded market opportunities, technology and skills transfer, and so on) but on a more
limited scale. Some area that aids in making that successful is the agricultural sector as it helps to serve
regional tastes and cultural preferences. The food industry offers the clearest example, Several food
crops, such as yam, cassava, potatoes, and aquaculture products are hardly subject to international
competition, in part due to their perishability and the ways of local preparation. Such products can be
marketed via regional chains, protected in part by local tastes and habits. Infrastructural development
can also be considered an important segment as this would help by facilitating greater connectivity and
more rapid technological advances which will aid to also increase the country’s GDP.
There are several distinct sectors all over Africa which aided in the advancement of industrialization.
One such example could be the agro-industries, for example in Ethiopia where it made 51.5% and 32.5%
respectively to GDP growth, these statistics depict how the incorporation of machines and humans
working side to side has proven to be a push for the African economy. This doesn’t only lend a helping
hand in building a better economy but also help to elevate the standard of living in some region.
Another sector that gave a push to the implementation of industrialization is the technological sector.
These benefits can be considered the driven force for structural change and long-term growth in several
areas of Africa. Companies like Releaf found in Lagos, Nigeria provides give farmers a chance to be a part
of agric-based industrialization, which can be seen as a way out of poverty for many.
Thus, overall industrialization played a crucial role to maintain a stable economy in South Africa. Several
industries helped to generate more employment which eventually gave the people more spending
power, resulting in a lift in the standard of living of the country. The introduction of new technologies
and equipment also aided in the increase in the number of goods produced which allowed them to start
international trade.
