Consider two closely spaced equipotential surfaces A and B with potential values V and V -dV. Let P
be a point on the surface B and dr be the perpendicular distance of the surface A from P.
Work done in moving unit positive charge from B to A against electric field is
dW = E. dr = E drcosO
dW = Edrcos 180°
dW = -Edr (1)
This work done is equal to potential difference between the surfaces A and B.

Limitations of Ohm's law are
1) Ohm’s law is applicable only for conductors at constant temperature.
32. 2) Ohm’s law holds good only if all physical conditions remain the same.
3) It is not applicable for conductors at very low and very high temperatures.
33.
i) When a paramagnetic substance is placed in magnetic field, lines of force inside the material are
slightly greater than that in air. ( p > po ).

ii) In non - uniform magnetic field they tend to move from weaker to stronger region of the field.
iii) These substances are weakly attracted by a strong magnet.

Lenz's law follows from the law of conservation of energy . When the north pole of the magnet
is moved towards the coil , the end face of the coil acts as a N - pole due to the induced current,
which flows in the anticlockwise direction . This opposes the motion of the magnet, which is the
J
cause of the emf . If the N - Pole of the magnet is moved away from the coil the end face acts as a
south pole by changing the current in the clockwise direction . This opposes the motion of the
magnet .

1) All distances are measured from the pole of the mirror along the principal axis.
2) The distances measured in the same direction as the incident light are taken as positive and
those measured in the direction opposite to the direction of incident light are taken as
negative.
3) The heights measured upwards, normal to the principal axis (X-axis) of the mirror are taken
as positive. The heights measured downwards are taken as negative.

The direction of magnetic field (dB) is perpendicular to the plane containingdl and r.
It has an X -component dB, and a component perpendicular to x -axis dBx (in XZ plane).
When the components perpendicular to the x-axis are summed over, they cancel out.
Thus, only the X-component dB cos 0 remains.

According to Einstein's
A part of the energy is used in liberating the electron from the metal surface (O 0 ) and the
remaining part as the maximum kinetic energy (Kmax ) of photo electron.

Kmax = hv <t> o

where v - frequency of incident radiation, v0 - threshold frequency. O0 - work function of the
43. material.
This equation is called Einstein's photoelectric equation,
(i) Photoelectric effect arises from the absorption of single photon by a single electron. If the
intensity of light is increased, more photons fall on the surface per unit time and more
electrons are emitted, Thus photoelectric current is directly proportional to intensity
(ii ) In eqn .(2 ), if incident frequency is less than threshold frequency then maximum kinetic
energy will be negative which is impossible explains the existence of threshold frequency.
(2024 As h is constant and v0 is constant for a given

maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons depends linearly on frequency v (and is
independent of intensity)
(iv) The basic process involved in photoelectric effect is the absorption of a photon of light by
an electron. Therefore the process is instantaneous.
[The absorption of energy by the electron of the metal from incident photon is a single event
which involves transfer of energy at once without any time lag]

A rectifier in which current flows over a complete cycle of the input ac is called a full wave rectifier.
Construction : Full wave rectifier consists of a step up transformer whose primary is connected to an
44. a.c source and the ends of secondary are connected to two diodes. The n - regions of the diodes are
joined together and connected to one end of the load resistance RL. The other end of the RL is
connected to centre tap (C) as shown in the figure.
J
Working: On application of AC voltage across the primary, a voltage is induced across the secondary
of the transformer. During +ve half cycle of AC input the diode Di gets forward biased and conducts
while D 2 being reverse biased is not conducting. So the output current flows through RL as shown in
AP
.
the fig.During -ve half cycle of AC input D2 conducts and Da does not conduct Again current flow
through RL as shown in the fig. Thus there is current flow through RL over the complete cycle of AC
input in the same direction. The input and output waveforms are as shown in the graph.
The efficiency of full wave rectifier is given by
