To interpret the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) using a 4-point Likert scale, follow these steps:
The negatively worded items are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 31,
33, 35, and 36.
3. Calculate Subscale Scores: The JSS can be divided into nine subscales, each
representing a different aspect of job satisfaction:
o Pay (items 1, 10, 19)
o Promotion (items 2, 11, 30)
o Supervision (items 3, 12, 21)
o Fringe Benefits (items 4, 13, 22)
o Contingent Rewards (items 5, 14, 23)
o Operating Procedures (items 6, 15, 33)
o Coworkers (items 7, 16, 25)
o Nature of Work (items 8, 17, 27)
o Communication (items 9, 18, 26)
For each subscale, sum the scores of the items within that subscale. Reverse score the
negatively worded items before summing.
4. Calculate Overall Job Satisfaction Score: Sum all the item scores to get a total score.
Again, make sure to reverse score the negatively worded items before summing.
5. Interpretation: Higher scores indicate higher job satisfaction. For individual items:
o Scores closer to 1 indicate strong disagreement and dissatisfaction.
o Scores closer to 4 indicate strong agreement and satisfaction.
Interpretation
1. Scoring:
o Items 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 31, 33, 35, and 36 are
negatively worded and should be reverse scored before summing.
o For negatively worded items, reverse the scores as follows:
1 becomes 4
2 becomes 3
3 becomes 2
4 becomes 1
2. Subscale Scores: Calculate the subscale scores by summing the scores of the items
within each subscale.
o Pay (items 1, 10, 19):
Item 1: ___
Item 10: ___ (reverse score)
Item 19: ___ (reverse score)
Total Pay Score: ___
4. Interpretation Guide:
o Low Job Satisfaction: 36 - 71
o Moderate Job Satisfaction: 72 - 107
o High Job Satisfaction: 108 - 144
