Subject: Happy New Year!
Dear Amanda,
To:
Happy New Year! Did you have a good time on New Year’s Eve? What did you do?
From:
Did you go to any parties? Did you watch the fireworks?
I had a very nice time here with my host family in Tokyo. We celebrated New Year
Subject:
in a very traditional way. The preparations started a few days before the end of the
year. We had to clean the whole house! My host mother and father wrote New Year’s
greetings cards to all their friends. They send the cards before New Year, but their
friends will receive them on 1st January. But most young people send emails to their
friends – like this!
On New Year’s Eve, we stayed up until midnight and listened to the temple bells. The
bells ring 108 times. On New Year’s Day, we had a special breakfast and all of the
children – including me – got a small present of some money wrapped in beautiful paper.
After breakfast, we put on our new clothes and went out for a walk in the park. Lots of other families were there, too.
Some of them were wearing beautiful brightly-coloured kimonos (traditional Japanese clothes). Everyone was smiling
and laughing and saying ‘Happy New Year’. Then we came home and ate a special New Year’s lunch. The best part was
trying all the special New Year’s sweets and cakes. They were really delicious.
This New Year was completely different from the ones we have at home in England – I’m sure I’ll never forget my New
Year in Japan!
Love from
Lucy
