Dear Amanda,
To:
Happy New Year! Did you have a good time on New Year’s Eve? What did you do?
From:
Did you go to any parties? Did you watch the fireworks?
I had a very nice time here with my host family in Tokyo. We celebrated New Year
Subject:

in a very traditional way. The preparations started a few days before the end of the
year. We had to clean the whole house! My host mother and father wrote New Year’s
greetings cards to all their friends. They send the cards before New Year, but their
friends will receive them on 1st January. But most young people send emails to their
friends – like this!
On New Year’s Eve, we stayed up until midnight and listened to the temple bells. The
bells ring 108 times. On New Year’s Day, we had a special breakfast and all of the
children – including me – got a small present of some money wrapped in beautiful paper.
After breakfast, we put on our new clothes and went out for a walk in the park. Lots of other families were there, too.
Some of them were wearing beautiful brightly-coloured kimonos (traditional Japanese clothes). Everyone was smiling
and laughing and saying ‘Happy New Year’. Then we came home and ate a special New Year’s lunch. The best part was
trying all the special New Year’s sweets and cakes. They were really delicious.
This New Year was completely different from the ones we have at home in England – I’m sure I’ll never forget my New
Year in Japan!
Love from
Lucy

My blog: Life 100 years ago

This blog is about a history project. I’m really interested in history and as
part of my history project for school, I had a great idea – we would try
to live like people did back in the early 1900s. I told my family about it
and they all agreed to join in. We wanted to find out what it was like to
live in the 1900s. We decided to do this for one week. We agreed on the
following rules: We weren’t allowed any modern-day comforts that hadn’t
been invented in 1900 (we couldn’t use anything that used electricity
because it was too expensive for an ordinary family in those days) – no
TV, no phones, no computers! We had to eat food that was available in
those days and we had to wear the clothes of that period. It was a time
travel adventure!
Read what the members of our family wrote in their journal.
Emma (me): We’ve done this for three days now and I haven’t eaten a
single chocolate or slice of pizza. That’s really been the hardest part – I
don’t mind the funny clothes, or washing my hair with soap. That’s all
been part of the experience, and it’s been a lot of fun.
Josie (sister): I think the most difficult thing has been spending a lot of
time with my family. We don’t usually spend that much time together!
And there are usually lots of distractions like TV, telephones, radio and
computers. It’s strange having so much free time, and time seems to go
by more slowly, too.
Alice (mother): It was a big shock to spend most of the day cleaning and cooking. Everything takes much longer.
And the clothes are very uncomfortable. I haven’t really had a rest since we started this project. I’ve been exhausted
all the time. I think I’ll really appreciate my washing machine next week!
Peter (father): My main job is to keep the stove warm to heat water and cook the food. I hate not having a shower
in the morning and I haven’t read the newspaper or watched the news on TV for a week – it’s terrible!

Have you ever been to a city without cars? What
do you think it is like? You can find out by joining

A Carfree Day is an international event in lots of
big cities around the world. On 22nd September
every year, people promise not to use their cars
for one day. Instead they go by train, bus, bicycle,
underground train, walk or work from home.

need to use cars. Yes, they’re fast and comfortable,
but think of the problems that they cause: noise,
pollution, traffic accidents. Too many cars can make
a city noisy and dangerous, and too much traffic
can make your journey slower, not faster! Carfree

Young People’s Volunteer Network

Help others, help yourself
Did you know that if you help other people, you help yourself, too? Hundreds of teenagers who have joined our
organisation say this is true! Many of our volunteers came to us because they had problems at school or at home.
Maybe they were bullied at school and didn’t have any friends. Maybe they felt stressed because of exams. We
can’t solve all of these problems for you, but we can promise you an experience that will help you feel better about
yourself and will help other people feel better, too.
Why do young people join us? Here are some of their comments:
