1.0 INTRODUCTION

This method statement describes the method to be used for installation of 68 nos of
bored pile along perimeter of the building as per latest construction drawing no.
TSCLK-NEC/SKM/S/F/KP/310 AMDT4. Piles diameter are 800mm and 1050mm.

2.0 INSTALLATION OF BORED PILE

2.1 Equipment and plant

The equipment and plant to be used are as below:

 Boring Rig
 Service Crane
 Excavator
 Welding Set
 Generator
 Auger
 Drilling Bucket
 Cleaning Bucket
 Temporary Casing
 Tremie Pipe
 Water Tank
 Lifting Table

2.2 Working Pile Installation

Upon confirmation from the Consultant, The following sequence of work shall
be carried out:

a. Setting out of test pile position

The Surveyor will set out the exactly pile position as shown in the
approved proposed test piling layout plan at site. The centre line of each
pile shall not deviate in either direction by more than 75mm. All setting out
of piles are with reference to column centre, unless specified.

Test Pile Point

b. Preparation of working platform for boring rig

The area near to the pile point will be leveled by excavator and then
paved with a few pieces of steel plates for the stability of boring rig sitting
on it.

c. Positioning Of Boring Rig

The boring plant intended to be used for this bored piling is hydraulic or
mechanical drilling rig. A suitable auguring tools or buckets will be
mounted on the drilling rig to enable boring in this particular ground
condition and pile dimension to the design requirement.

Auger

Two (2) points will be offset from the exactly boring point for the purpose
of controlling the centre of the bored pile. Then, the drilling rig will be
moved to the pile position intended for boring. The Kelly bar mounted with
the appropriate auger is placed just above the pile point. The vertically of
the Kelly bar will be controlled by plumb string or spirit level.
Offset point 1

Offset point 2

Centre of Test Pile

The position of the auger is checked against the pile point. Adjustments
shall be made so that the centre of the auger is nearest to the survey
point to ensure that the tolerances of deviation can be maintained. Then,
the auger is lowered and boring operations is commenced. Reasonable
care should be taken so that the pile position and vertically are
constructed within the specified tolerance.

d. Pile Boring

i. Installation Of temporary Casing

Pre-boring for installation of temporary casing commence after

positioning of boring rig. A suitable length of casing will be installed
to the pre-bored hole by vibro-hammer. The temporary casing will be
extended until it reaches the stable strata and also projected a
minimum of 0.5m metre above the working platform level. Vertical
accuracy of the casing will be recorded prior to commencement of
boring check for the positioned tolerance.

ii. Extension Of Temporary Casing

In the even that 1st length of temporary casing stop at unstable soil,
the length of casing shall be extended by welding another length of
casing to it. After completed welding, it will be driven further down
using vibro-hammer.

In the event that long casing not good enough to prevent soil from
collapsing, water or bentonite will be used.

If water is used, no test of water checking required.

If bentonite is used, the properties of bentonite slurry to be controlled

through the following test:

1) Density of slurry: Mud density balance.

2) Viscosity of slurry: Marsh cone method..
3) pH: pH indicator paper strips or electrical pH meter.
4) Sand content: Sand content set.

Control of Bentonite slurry properties which provided by bentonite is as

follows:

Test Method Fresh After Desanding

Density 1.01 to 1.09 <1.15
Marsh Cone, sec/Qt 30 to 70 30 to 45
pH 8 to 10 8 to 10
Sand Content - <5

The properties test shall be carried out whenever there is new made
bentonite. Test shall also carry out daily for bentonite after desanding.

The head of the drilling fluid will be kept at a level high enough to ensure
sufficient stabilizing capacity in the uncased shaft area.

Bentonite fluid used for drilling purpose must be supplied to the pile from
the fluid plant storage area through a supply line.

After completion of bored pile, the contaminated bentonite slurry will be

pumped into a tanker and transport to the dumping area for disposal.

iii. Soil Boring

For boring through soil layer, boring will carried out by using soil
auger.

iv. Continue Boring With Auger Or Bucket

Continue boring with soil auger or bucket. In the event that rock or
boulders is encountered, soil boring tool will not be able to excavate
the borehole further. At this stage, rock tool will be used instead of
soil tool for continuing the coring process.

Boring continue until required depth of the borehole is reached. A

measuring tap with a 200mm and 300mm steel bar attached to its
end will be used to measure the depth of borehole. The surface of
borehole bottom can be determined by the mentioned measuring tap
and shall be recorded. At the time of coring process, soil sample will
be collected in a sample bag for record.

The pile termination criteria such as required length, concrete
strength and the required working pile capacities should refer to the
construction drawing or specified by the Engineer. Actual
termination depths and socket length shall be agreed based on
review of the conditions encountered during boring and prior to
commencement of concreting. During the boring/coring operations,
sample will be taken as directed. These samples will be properly
labeled and for record and reference.

e. Completion Of Boring

Boring will be ceased when the agreed pile toe level has been reached.
During the boring operations, sample will be taken as directed. Minimum
pile length will be referred to construction drawing no. TSCLK-
NEC/SKM/S/F/KP/310 AMDT4. In the case where the bed rock is at a
level higher than the minimum length as mentioned in the drawing, pile
will be terminated after socketing 1.25D into sound bed rock.

Rock core samples are to be taken at the toe level of the pile for
compressive strength test. All rock level/founding level, core sample etc.
are to be inspected and verified by SKME’s site representatives.
The rock socketing length is measured from the lowest surface level of the
sound bedrock. The top surface levels of the sound bedrock are to be
established by using probing method.

f. Cleaning Of Borehole Base

Upon completing of boring, loose and disturbed or remolded soil shall be

removed from the base of borehole using a cleaning bucket which is
attached to the Kelly bar of boring rig. This procedure will be repeated
several times until the base is cleaned. The cleanliness of borehole
bottom is determined by dipping with measuring tap. If the concreting
work is delayed for whatever reasons, base cleaning operation will be
repeated before concreting. In the wet holes, air lifting method will be
used to remove debris and clean the pile base.

g. Installation of Reinforcement Cage

i. Fabrication of reinforcement cage

Reinforcement cage is fabricated at site by bar benders. Standard

length is 12m per cage.
ii. Preparation of reinforcement cage

Prior to installation, reinforcement cage shall be prepared as per latest

construction drawing no. TSCLK-NEX/SKM/S/F/KP/310 AMDT4.

 Welding of Links

Several links at the top of the steel cage will be welded to provide
rigidity, and hanging supports will be welded to the main steel at
the top of the cage to facilitate lifting.

 Concrete Spacers

Circular concrete spacers will be used, constructed of the same

grade of the concrete as the pile or higher to provide 75mm cover.
The spacers will be either be threaded onto the links or the part of
the links. Cover block spacing along the length of the pill will not
be more than 2.0m and along the perimeter, it shall be not more
than 750mm.

 Reinforcement cage length

Minimum 12m of reinforcement cage in accordance to the design

requirement will be fabricated on site. The reinforcement cage
shall be full length and the starter bar shall project at least 40 of
main rebar diameter above the pile cut off level as per project
specification.

 Reinforcement cages must be verified for its correctness and

cleanliness prior to inserting reinforcement. If necessary the base
of the bored pile will be cleaned thoroughly again.

h. Concreting

After installation of reinforcement cage, concrete will be poured into the

hole by ‘tremie method, described as follows:

i. Tremie pipe of cross-section of diameter 200mm – 250mm will be

joined and lowered, one by one, into the borehole until the end of
the pipe just contacts the bottom of the borehole. The tremie pipe
will then be raised about 200mm to facilitate the flow of the concrete.

ii. Tremie concrete will then be placed via a hopper attached to the top
section of the tremie pipe.

iii. Concrete placed by tremie will demonstrate a slump of between 75 -

175mm.
iv. After each pour of concrete from the truck, measuring the depth of
concrete shall be taken by dipping with measuring tape.

v. As the level of concrete in the borehole rises, the tremie pipe will be
withdrawn accordingly. Care will be taken to ensure that the bottom
of the tremie pipe is at all times embedded at least 3m below the
concrete level in the borehole.

Concrete shall be carried out continuously without interruption. Concrete

conforming to the specification and design requirement will be delivered to
site by ready mixed concrete supplier.

The pile shall be cast until fresh concrete is at least 1.5m or the diameter
of the pile, whichever is more, above the pile cut off level. After extraction
of casing, ensure sound concrete is achieved above the cut-off level.

Adding concrete during removal of temporary casing should be using

tremie only, unless it is fully overflowed to sound concrete.

Nine (9) nos. of 150mm X 150mm X 150mm cubes shall be taken for every
bored pile. Three (3) cubes will be tested at seven (7) days and anther
three (3) cubes will be tested at 28 days after casting. Three (3) cubes
shall be safely kept as spare. Each cube shall be properly marked and
identified with details relating the specimen to the bore hole in which the
concrete used and shall be tested under independent laboratory testing
and witnessed by the Engineer’s representative.

Overcast section of the pile will be removed after the concrete reaches full
strength.
