The Nutcracker - A Christmas play

SCRIPT
Music plays – The Nutcracker Overture (from Tchaikovsky’s nutcracker)
(as the music plays the party guests enter the room and put their presents under the tree
before going to sit in their places or take their places on the stage)
Narrator It was Christmas Eve and Clara and Fritz were very excited. Tonight
it was the Christmas Party and there were lots of presents under the
tree
All sing to tune of twinkle twinkle ( repeat twice)
See all the presents by the Christmas tree, some for you and some for me
Long ones tall ones short ones too, here is a round one wrapped in blue
See all the presents by the Christmas tree, some for you and some for me
(Doorbell rings)
Fritz He’s here! He’s Here!
Clara Uncle Drosselmeyer!
Narrator The door burst open and in walked Uncle Drosselmeyer. He was a
magician who always brought the children special gifts at Christmas
(Drosselmeyer enters the stage carrying two gift boxes and gives one each to Clara and
fritz)
Uncle Drosselmeyer I’ve brought you a wonderful present
Narrator Clara and fritz opened their presents. Uncle drosselmeyer had
bought Fritz a toy mouse
Fritz squeak squeak squeak
Narrator and he’d brought Clara a beautiful nutcracker doll
Clara Thank you so much
Thank you song (To tune of London Bridge is falling down ) repeat twice
Thank you for our christmas gifts, christmas gifts, christmas gifts
Thank you Uncle Drosselmeyer for our lovely presents.
Narrator It was time for the children to go to bed so they put their presents
under the tree and said goodnight.
Music – Dance of the grandfathers (from Tchaikovsky’s nutcracker)
( the children give drosselmeyer a hug and they all leave the stage. The lights dim and
the christmas tree is swapped for a large one and the nutcracker and mouse toys are
replaced by the characters a clock chimes 12 and the lights start to brighten)
Narrator Clara couldn’t sleep and as the clock struck midnight she crept back
downstairs (Clara creeps onto the stage) Clara thought she must be
dreaming. What had happened to the Christmas tree?
Clara Woah!! What happened?
Nutcracker Hello Clara
Clara Who said that?
Nutcracker it was me the nutcracker prince
Narrator the Nutcracker prince told Clara that he had come to protect her
from the mouse king. He wanted to eat all the Christmas treats.
Nutcracker The mouse King wants to eat all the Christmas treats
Clara oh no! How can we stop him
Nutcracker We need to set a trap
Narrator Clara and the Nutcracker put a piece of gingerbread in the middle of
the floor and hid behind the tree. Just then the Mouse King
appeared. He saw the piece of gingerbread and licked his lips.
Mouse King mmmmmmmm yummy that looks delicious!
(Clara and the nutcracker creep up behind the mouse king and throw the net over him)
Narrator As the mouse King started to eat the gingerbread Clara and The
Nutcracker caught him in their net.
Mouse King Hey
Clara Those treats are not for you
Nutcracker The treats are for the children
Mouse King I’m sorry it’s just they're soooooooo tasty
Narrator Clara felt sorry for the mouse and asked him to make a promise
Clara if we let you go do you promise not to pinch anymore?
Mouse King I promise
Nutcracker Very Well
Narrator Clara and the Nutcracker released the Mouse King and he scurried
away. (The mouse king runs off the stage) Because she’d been so
kind the Nutcracker told Clara he would take her to the land of
sweets.
Nutcracker Come with me
Narrator They climbed into a magical sleigh and it started to snow

(As the next song is sung The snowflakes enter the stage and dance around swirling and
twirling)
Song – Snowflake serenade ( to the tune of polly put the kettle on)
See them as they swirl around
Watch them as they whirl around
The soft white snowflakes falling down, down to the ground
See them in their millions
Hundreds, thousands, billions
Count them as they’re falling down, down to the ground
See them swirling in the air
Swirling, twirling everywhere
The soft white snowflakes falling down, down to the ground

(The snowflakes leave the stage and the sweets enter and stand in their groups)

Narrator as the snowflakes melted away Clara could see lollipop trees and
marshmallow flowers. They walked up to a marzipan castle and out
flew a group of fairies
(The fairies fly onto the stage)
Sugar Plum Fairy Welcome to our Kingdom. I’m the sugar plum fairy and these are my
friends
Fairy Cake I’m fairy cake. I do all the baking
Fairy Liquid I’m fairy Liquid and I do all the washing up (looks at fairy cake and
folds her arms grumpily)
Clara Hello I’m Clara
Narrator the fairies were getting all the sweets and treats ready for
Christmas.
(As the song plays the fairies fly around the stage waving their wands over the sweets to
make them dance)
Song ( to tune of I’m a little teapot)repeat twice
We’re the Christmas fairies, how do you do?
We’re making lots of treats just for you
Candy canes and chocolate, marshmallow goo
Gingerbread and jelly beans too
Sugar Plum fairy Thank you for catching the mouse king
Candy Cane He's very cheeky!
Fairy Cake Yes he’s been eating all the treats
Gingerbread man. He can't catch me though
Fairy Liquid We were worried there wouldn’t be enough left!
Candy Cane. Now there will be plenty
Narrator As a thank you for helping them the fairies invited Clara to their
Party. They all danced together around the Christmas tree
Song – Here we go round the Christmas tree (to the tune of here we go round the
mulberry bush)
Here we go round the Christmas tree

Here we go round the Christmas tree
At Christmas time in the morning

This is the way we make a star

At Christmas time in the morning

Narrator Clara was getting sleepy and gave a big yawn. She curled up and fell
asleep. It was time for Clara to go home so the sugar plum fairy
waved her magic wand and everyone disappeared.
(Everyone leaves the stage except for Clara. Music from the overture plays in background
as the small tree and nutcracker are returned to the stage.)

Narrator When Clara opened her eyes she was back at home. Maybe it was all
a dream.
Clara It must have been a dream!
Narrator But then she saw the basket of sweets and a sprinkling of fairy dust.

All. Merry Christmas to all!!
