GST 102: COMMUNICATION IN ENGLISH – SECOND SEMESTER


COURSE DESCRIPTION
GST 102 is designed to promote English language proficiency for students at the undergraduate
level in all departments. The focus will be on language skills such as listening, speaking, reading,
and writing, using texts, traditional grammar textbooks and online materials. It is designed to
improve and polish students' use of the English language to communicate effectively.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
GST 102: COMMUNICATION IN ENGLISH – SECOND SEMESTER
COURSE DESCRIPTION
GST 102 is designed to promote English language proficiency for students at the undergraduate
level in all departments via the four basic communication skills of listening, speaking, reading,
and writing, using texts, traditional grammar textbooks and online materials. The course is
designed to improve and polish students' use of the English language to communicate effectively
within and outside the university community.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
GST 102 will:
(i) introduce you to diverse communication skills in English;
(ii) give you broad-based knowledge of the written language and its skills;
(iii) expose you to diverse reading enabling skills relevant to your studies in the
university and beyond; and
(iv) give you the necessary logical skills to survive the rigors of the academy.
At the end of the semester, students should be able to:
(v) apply logical and critical reasoning skills for meaningful presentations

(vi) demonstrate an appreciable level of the art of public speaking and listening

(vii) write simple and technical reports

(viii) learn the rudiments of public speaking

(ix) apply critical reading and analytical skills to texts

Mode of Teaching: Hybrid

Class Policy: Attendance is compulsory for all students. All computers and phones must be
switched off during physical lectures.

Assessment Procedure: Assessment Procedure: Grading is based on individual performance


through mid-semester test(s) which forms the continuous assessment (40%), and examination at
the end of the course. The examination shall be 60%. Plagiarism is an offense and any form of
malpractice will be penalised.
NOTE THAT THE CA TEST AND FINAL EXAMINATION WILL BE COMPUTER-BASED.

section.
