Assignment – 01

Study of hardware and software requirements of different

operating systems (UNIX, LINUX, WINDOWS XP,
WINDOWS7/8:

UNIX:
UNIX is a family of multitasking, multiuser computer operating systems.
Hardware requirements for UNIX systems can vary greatly depending on the
specific distribution and version. UNIX-like operating systems such as
FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Solaris have different requirements. However, as a
general guideline, UNIX systems can typically run on a wide range of hardware
configurations, from older systems to modern servers. UNIX-like systems can
function on lower hardware resources compared to modern Windows versions.

Linux:
Linux is a Unix-like operating system, often used as an alternative to
proprietary Unix operating systems. Linux distributions also vary in their
hardware requirements. Here are some typical requirements:
CPU: Most Linux distributions support a wide range of CPU architectures
including x86, x86-64, ARM, and others.
RAM: Minimum RAM requirements can vary from as low as 512 MB for
lightweight distributions to 1-2 GB for more feature-rich ones.
Disk Space: Typically, a few GB of disk space is required for installation, but
actual disk space usage can vary significantly depending on installed packages
and usage.
Graphics: Linux supports a wide range of graphics hardware, including
integrated and dedicated graphics cards.

Windows XP:
CPU: Pentium 233 MHz or higher processor (300 MHz recommended).
RAM: 64 MB minimum (128 MB recommended).
Disk Space: Approximately 1.5 GB of available hard disk space.
Graphics: Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and
monitor.
Windows 7:
CPU: 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
RAM: 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).
Disk Space: 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).
Graphics: DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.

Windows 8:
CPU: 1 GHz or faster processor with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2.
RAM: 1 GB (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit) RAM.
Disk Space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) available hard disk space.
Graphics: DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.
Keep in mind that these are general hardware requirements, and actual
performance can vary based on specific usage scenarios and additional software
installed. It's always a good idea to check the official documentation or system
requirements provided by the respective operating system vendors for the most
accurate information. Additionally, newer versions of operating systems may
have higher hardware requirements to take advantage of modern features and
advancements.
