Grant Prideco™ Double Shoulder Connection

Enhanced performance and interchangeability

with API rotary shouldered connections
The Grant Prideco Double Shoulder Wear Operational Envelope GPDS 50 versus API NC 50
connection is a high performance, rotary

streamlined configurations and tolerates
more tool joint wear than standard API
rotary shouldered connections.
New Decreasing Tool Joint OD Worn

An NC 50 connection on 5 inch 19.50 lb/ft S135 drill pipe is downgraded to API Class 2 when
the OD wears below 6 5 ⁄ 16 inches. GPDS 50 can tolerate wear down to a diameter of 5 15 ⁄ 16
inches, resulting in an improvement of over 100% in tool joint wear allowance.

Improved torque capacity

Streamlined GPDS connections provide 20% to 50% greater torque when compared
to API connections of the same dimensions. This additional strength provides the

environments. GPDS 31 NC 31

The GPDS connection is similar to other API connections, except that GPDS incorpo-
rates an internal secondary torque shoulder. GPDS has the same thread form and is
interchangeable with its API counterpart connection, as shown in the illustration to the
right. Note how the GPDS pin secondary torque shoulder runs out without shouldering
in the back of the API box connection. “Interchangeability” means that the connections
will mate together, make-up and function; however, the performance properties will
be limited to those of an API connection. The table to the right identifies the GPDS
connections with their interchangeable API connection types.

Slim profile and improved hydraulics

The GPDS connection’s increased torsional strength allows for tool joint dimensional
optimization more suitable for the pipe body torsional strength. GPDS connections
can be configured with a smaller OD and larger ID compared to standard API con-
nections to improve hydraulic performance. The GPDS double shoulder design also
provides a true flush ID through the mated tool joint assembly. There is no gap or
change in the inside diameter from the box to the pin, creating a smoother fluid flow
with less turbulence, in addition to eliminating the opportunity for trapped cement
and cuttings.

uGPDS™
This enhanced version of the GPDS connection allows either higher torque capacity or
further enhanced hydraulics. uGPDS connections are interchangeable with GPDS and
API connections of similar size. Ask your NOV Grant Prideco sales representative about
our Grant Prideco uLtimate™ Series connections for more detailed information.
