Chapter One
Chapter One
Background
Local public markets have played an important role in communities for centuries and are a
key public space. Local markets serve the community in numerous ways, including acting as
main trading centers where people can earn a living, creating social spaces in the
neighborhoods for locals to meet and interact with one another. Local public markets have
many community benefits among which include:
Health: Local markets help create healthy environments that encourage health eating.
Livelihoods: Local markets are source of livelihood for local retail businesses. This is
particularly important for rural women migrants to city, for whom few get job
opportunities.
Social cohesion: Local markets create a critical role in economic life of the city,
public markets contribute to social cohesion of districts.
Linking rural and urban communities
However, due to the government’s initiative to plan, develop and modernize towns and cities,
supermarkets and commercial centers are threatening to replace these local traditional
markets. Therefore the need to upgrade these local markets from mere kiosks, temporary
shades and umbrellas to permanent and more structurally stable structures.
Purpose of study:
In order to come up with drawings that protect, preserve, and enhance this local public
market, we needed to understand the current policy and physical environment of markets with
in the locality.
The Uganda market Act 1942 Cap 94, The KCC Ordinance 15 (2006),
The markets Act 2023, among other references were assessed.
Some of the findings from our survey included but not limited to the following. At
the time our survey, the biggest number of vendors in this market dealt in food stuffs
both dry and fresh. The physical state of this market was lucking where most of the
vendors operated under dilapidated temporary structures which are structurally
unsafe as most of them were already leaning. Others vendors were operating under
umbrellas.
This Local Market is owned by Buganda Kingdom and currently under the REXBA Limited
management.
Location:
Namirembe Market is a local market found in Mengo market Village, Namirembe Parish,
Lubaga division, kampala Capital City in Central Uganda at a national grid reference
0.308850, 32.556907.
Main Objective of the Design
To design a more sustainable, accessible and durable local market for the community.
1.3 Specific Objectives of the Design
To design an artistic impression for the structure.
To carry out a need’s assessment analysis with respect to national local markets
regulations.
To obtain thorough information about the site assets and liabilities prior to starting the
design process.
To carry out a sustainable design of the proposed structure
Architectural Drawings
Architects have moved on from the old methods of using cardboards and pieces of plywood
to show what they have in mind or what the client requires. This time consuming technique
has since been replaced with software such as Revit, Arch CAD, Auto CAD and many others.
ArchCAD which was used as modelling software application enabled more productive
design of this building, based on the Virtual Building approach (GRAPHISOFT, 2024). As
shown in figure 2.1below
Minimum Headroom
The minimum headroom or height clearance from floor level to the underside of any
projection including beams, direction signs, sprinkler heads, electrical fitting and others
shall be 2200mm.
However, our headroom for this project is 2800mm which is sufficient for aeration and
ventilation
CHAPTER THREE: METHODOLOGY
Architectural Designs
The design process involved a series of procedures which included the following:
1. Desk study which involved visiting the market office to check the master plan and to
collect the information about the requirements of the upgraded modern market
structure.
2. Reconnaissance survey was carried out on site to check out for the physical and nature
of the terrain, so as to be able to come up with a site layout which helped us ascertain
the best size and dimensions of the structure and how to position it well.(Adler, 1970)
3. Dimensioning the drawings to aid in construction and providing space for other
building services which include, lightening, protection, Heating, Ventilation, Air
conditioning, Water, drainage and plumbing, Fire detection, fighting and protection,
Energy supply systems and Lighting. (Packard, 2002)
There are different ways from which population can be determined and these include the
following;
The following data for different decades was obtained from the market
authorities and it was used to project the future population of the market which
was used as the design data.
Year 1994 2004 2014 2024
1994 219 – –
(1176/4) (74.2/4)
Average decrease per decade
=294 =18.6%
Pn = P0 [1+r/100]n
P2024 = 69 vendors
At the end of five decades we expect the numbers to increase by 345 vendors keeping
other factors constant.
This has a power & security house, stationery area, printer area, kitchen & restaurant with a rest
room, general toilets for the males, females & a ramp for people with special needs.
The first, second and third floor are all designed for the capacity of 200 vendors.
Roof.
The roof is made up of a combination of steel gabled roof and reinforced flat concrete slab roof.
This roof was designed in accordance with the Ministry of works and transport specifications for
building works (May-2013, Part.1, section 6) as well as BS EN 501.
Car parking
The car car parking space was designed according to The National Physical Planning Standards and
guidelines 2011
