INTRODUCTION
Early in 2013–2018, the Philippine gym craze started, and it has continued to
develop ever since. Anytime Fitness opened 50 facilities in the Philippines, according to
Philstar (2018). This led to an increase in new subscriptions, which will continue to rise
until 2023. As a result of this expansion, issues emerge. Fitness aficionados from a
variety of backgrounds and with varying levels of sanitation are flocking to these
businesses as fitness trends rise. Hygiene is the most pervasive and obvious problem in
gyms, and maintaining a clean gym is insufficient. Given how much the fitness industry
has expanded in the Philippines in recent years. This rise is indicative of the growing
demand for fitness services in the Philippines. Furthermore, a substantial increase in
gym memberships is anticipated between 2018 and 2023, with a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of at least 11%. The issues are numerous and include everything
from potential health risks to the difficulty of handling wet clothing and getting rid of
odors that remain.
Gym-goers frequently use plastic bags for their worn clothes and end up dragging
different bags for their belongings, which can cause environmental issues. Seeing
Fitness Enthusiasts, with current sportswear emphasizing comfort over useful
considerations like easy storage. In response, the Athleisure Shirt aims to ease typical
aches and pains related to conventional training apparel. In addition to recognizing the
difficulties in dealing with wet clothes and lingering smells, the Athleisure Shirt also
emphasizes how urgently a clean workout space is needed. To support the theory, the
Athleisure Shirt presents as a complete solution that improves mobility, stores
conveniently, and keeps odors from contaminating clothing. The Shepherd Company will
not only be making Athleisure Shirts to tackle all the problems mentioned above, but
also to be able to bridge the gap to fitness enthusiasts in the market since the Athleisure
Shirt is a revolutionary product that can change the trajectory of the athleisure market.
Theoretical Framework
The study attempts to examine the existence and acceptability of athleisure shirts
in the fashion industry by applying Rogers' (1962) Theory of Fashion Diffusion. This
theoretical framework is an invaluable resource for comprehending the ways in which
10
new fashion ideas—like athleisure shirts—seep into and become popular in a given
market or cultural setting. A fashion innovation moves through five crucial stages,
according to the Theory of Fashion Diffusion: awareness, interest, appraisal, trial, and
adoption. These phases clarify the manner in which people learn about new fashion
trends, become intrigued by them, determine whether they mesh well with their own
particular tastes, try them out on themselves, and finally make the decision to include
them to their wardrobe.
Rather than being the main emphasis of this study, the Rogers Theory of Fashion
Diffusion will be used as a tool for behavioral analysis. Examining the prevalence of
athleisure shirts in the fashion industry will be the primary goal of the study. In particular,
the study will explore how consumers come across these shirts, become intrigued by
their distinctive fusion of style and functionality, evaluate how well-suited they are for
different occasions, try them out in diverse environments, and eventually incorporate
them into their everyday wardrobe. Although the behavioral parts of this phenomenon
can be understood through the Rogers Theory of Fashion Diffusion, the 4Ps' Marketing
Mix—product, price, place, and promotion strategies—will be the main focus of the
research. Within this theoretical framework, a number of factors impacting the
proliferation of athleisure clothing—such as marketing strategies, peer pressure, and
individual preferences—will be investigated.
Accompanying variables:
With the use of this theoretical framework and taking these factors into account, we want
to gain a thorough knowledge of how Athleisure Shirts were created and spread
11
throughout the fashion industry. This strategy Will clarify the various stages of consumer
acceptance and the determining elements that influence this complex procedure.
12
Conceptual Framework
13
Body odor is a problem for fitness enthusiasts and athletes, mostly because of
excessive perspiration during physical activity (Klepp et al., 2016). The risk of skin
infections is increased when athletic equipment is not properly cleaned (Macini et al.,
2012). Choosing the right fabric for sportswear, especially shirts, is essential for
controlling body odor. According to McQueen et al. (2018), the use of synthetic materials
in sportswear is a contributing factor to elevated levels of perspiration and odor. This
problem affects physically active people's comfort, hygiene, and personal hygiene.
Furthermore, it interacts with the increasing worry about the usage of single-use plastics,
which makes it necessary to investigate sustainable alternatives in the design of
sportswear (Smith, 2020).
The creation of the Athleisure Shirt offers a chance to deal with these complex
issues. It satisfies consumers' inclinations for environmentally responsible products in
addition to meeting the pressing needs of active people in terms of comfort and hygiene
(Johnson, 2019). The Athleisure Shirt advances environmental awareness and lessens
dependency on single-use plastics, which increases its marketability and advances the
fitness gear industry's larger objective of sustainability (Garcia, 2021). In order to
address body odor and environmental concerns among fitness enthusiasts and athletes,
the research intends to determine the efficacy and market potential of athleisure shirts.
In conclusion, this research explores the variables affecting players at Tiger City Gym
in Mandaluyong's marketability of packable sports shirts, with a particular emphasis on
the 4Ps Marketing Mix framework. Through the examination of demographic profiles that
include factors like age, gender, and socioeconomic position, the objective is to identify
prospective high-value customers and improve marketing tactics. Furthermore, our
analysis of perceived value and price provides insights into product positioning, helping
to better satisfy the varied needs of both male and female fitness enthusiasts and
enhance perceived value. Furthermore, our examination of marketing campaigns and
distribution plans emphasizes how important knowledge, accessibility, and usefulness
are to the success of the Packable Athleisure Shirt. This study uses a thorough
methodology to explain how the 4Ps and demographic profiles interact while offering
practical suggestions for maximizing each component of the marketing mix for both
first-time market entry and continuing customer engagement.
Hypothesis
Null: There is no significant relationship between the demographic profile and the
Packable Athleisure Shirt in terms of Price, Product, Place, and Promotion.
Alternative: There is a significant relationship between the demographic profile and the
Packable Athleisure Shirt in terms of Price, Product, Place, and Promotion.
15
This study's importance goes beyond its immediate focus to address important
challenges in the fitness sector as well as more general environmental concerns.
The study's delimitations include its omission of other fitness centers in the
Philippines and its exclusive emphasis on Tiger City Gym in Mandaluyong. Furthermore,
although the study recognizes more general environmental and hygienic concerns in the
fitness industry, its main focus is on the marketability and customer acceptability of
Athleisure Shirts. The study focuses on the potential of Athleisure Shirts to provide
17
solutions to these issues rather than trying to fully address every facet of environmental
sustainability or hygiene management in gyms. In addition, the study's purview includes
analyzing gender, age, and socioeconomic profile profiles in addition to assessing the
4Ps—price, product, place, and promotion—as they apply to the Packable Athleisure
Shirt. These markers are crucial components for comprehending customer behavior and
market positioning. Nevertheless, the research does not encompass comprehensive
evaluations of additional plausible elements impacting customer conduct, such cultural
inclinations or brand allegiance.
METHODS
The adoption of a Google Form survey is consistent with the correlational study
methodology. Google Forms enables the collection of quantitative data from a varied
sample of respondents, including demographic information and perceptions of the
Packable Athleisure Shirt across multiple dimensions (Brown & Jones, 2016). The
survey style assures standardized data gathering, making results easy to analyze and
interpret. Furthermore, the implementation of an ANOVA test enhances this design by
allowing for the investigation of potential changes in perceptions across demographic
18
groups (Lee & Kim, 2018). By testing the null hypothesis, the researchers hope to
determine whether there are statistically significant relationships between demographic
profiles and perceptions of the Packable Athleisure Shirt, which will help marketers and
product developers better understand consumer preferences and behavior.
Population and Sampling
Purposive sampling was chosen by the researcher because it is a suitable method for
choosing individuals who have particular qualities that are pertinent to the goals of the
study (Creswell & Creswell, 2017). By focusing on Tiger City Gym Fitness Enthusiasts
who have used the Packable Athleisure Shirt, the researcher guarantees that the sample
offers insightful information about the elements affecting the product's marketability. This
technique enables a targeted approach, making it possible to get pertinent information
from those who are most likely to offer insightful product feedback.
Instrumentation
The survey questionnaire is divided into several pieces. The first set of questions asks
about the respondents' demographics. The participant's opinions of the Packable
Athleisure Shirt, including its comfort, toughness, and style, are explored in the parts that
follow. It may also be possible to include open-ended questions to give participants the
opportunity to offer more comments or ideas for improvement.
● The researcher will do multiple regression analysis for Statement of the Problem
number ONE, which seeks to identify the variables impacting Fitness Enthusiasts'
initial attraction to the Packable Athleisure Shirt. This statistical technique makes
it possible to investigate the link between a dependent variable (the shirt's first
attractiveness) and several independent variables (such as age, gender, and
fitness objectives).
● The researcher will perform an independent sample t-test for Statement of the
Problem number TWO, which focuses on evaluating the functionality and
usefulness of the Packable Athleisure Shirt during workouts. The mean
evaluations of perceived functioning and utility between the shirt's users and
non-users will be compared using statistical methods.
