INTRODUCTION

Early in 2013–2018, the Philippine gym craze started, and it has continued to
develop ever since. Anytime Fitness opened 50 facilities in the Philippines, according to
Philstar (2018). This led to an increase in new subscriptions, which will continue to rise
until 2023. As a result of this expansion, issues emerge. Fitness aficionados from a
variety of backgrounds and with varying levels of sanitation are flocking to these
businesses as fitness trends rise. Hygiene is the most pervasive and obvious problem in
gyms, and maintaining a clean gym is insufficient. Given how much the fitness industry
has expanded in the Philippines in recent years. This rise is indicative of the growing
demand for fitness services in the Philippines. Furthermore, a substantial increase in
gym memberships is anticipated between 2018 and 2023, with a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of at least 11%. The issues are numerous and include everything
from potential health risks to the difficulty of handling wet clothing and getting rid of
odors that remain.

Gym-goers frequently use plastic bags for their worn clothes and end up dragging
different bags for their belongings, which can cause environmental issues. Seeing
Fitness Enthusiasts, with current sportswear emphasizing comfort over useful
considerations like easy storage. In response, the Athleisure Shirt aims to ease typical
aches and pains related to conventional training apparel. In addition to recognizing the
difficulties in dealing with wet clothes and lingering smells, the Athleisure Shirt also
emphasizes how urgently a clean workout space is needed. To support the theory, the
Athleisure Shirt presents as a complete solution that improves mobility, stores
conveniently, and keeps odors from contaminating clothing. The Shepherd Company will
not only be making Athleisure Shirts to tackle all the problems mentioned above, but
also to be able to bridge the gap to fitness enthusiasts in the market since the Athleisure
Shirt is a revolutionary product that can change the trajectory of the athleisure market.

Theoretical Framework

The study attempts to examine the existence and acceptability of athleisure shirts
in the fashion industry by applying Rogers' (1962) Theory of Fashion Diffusion. This
theoretical framework is an invaluable resource for comprehending the ways in which
10

new fashion ideas—like athleisure shirts—seep into and become popular in a given
market or cultural setting. A fashion innovation moves through five crucial stages,
according to the Theory of Fashion Diffusion: awareness, interest, appraisal, trial, and
adoption. These phases clarify the manner in which people learn about new fashion
trends, become intrigued by them, determine whether they mesh well with their own
particular tastes, try them out on themselves, and finally make the decision to include
them to their wardrobe.

Rather than being the main emphasis of this study, the Rogers Theory of Fashion
Diffusion will be used as a tool for behavioral analysis. Examining the prevalence of
athleisure shirts in the fashion industry will be the primary goal of the study. In particular,
the study will explore how consumers come across these shirts, become intrigued by
their distinctive fusion of style and functionality, evaluate how well-suited they are for
different occasions, try them out in diverse environments, and eventually incorporate
them into their everyday wardrobe. Although the behavioral parts of this phenomenon
can be understood through the Rogers Theory of Fashion Diffusion, the 4Ps' Marketing
Mix—product, price, place, and promotion strategies—will be the main focus of the
research. Within this theoretical framework, a number of factors impacting the
proliferation of athleisure clothing—such as marketing strategies, peer pressure, and
individual preferences—will be investigated.

The Theory of Fashion Diffusion:

Independent Variable: People's reactions to athletic apparel.

Accompanying variables:

A. Understanding of sports Shirts

B. interest in activewear clothing
C. Review of athletic clothing
D. Sportswear Shirts are being tested.

With the use of this theoretical framework and taking these factors into account, we want
to gain a thorough knowledge of how Athleisure Shirts were created and spread
11

throughout the fashion industry. This strategy Will clarify the various stages of consumer
acceptance and the determining elements that influence this complex procedure.
12

Conceptual Framework
13

Statement of the Problem

Body odor is a problem for fitness enthusiasts and athletes, mostly because of
excessive perspiration during physical activity (Klepp et al., 2016). The risk of skin
infections is increased when athletic equipment is not properly cleaned (Macini et al.,
2012). Choosing the right fabric for sportswear, especially shirts, is essential for
controlling body odor. According to McQueen et al. (2018), the use of synthetic materials
in sportswear is a contributing factor to elevated levels of perspiration and odor. This
problem affects physically active people's comfort, hygiene, and personal hygiene.
Furthermore, it interacts with the increasing worry about the usage of single-use plastics,
which makes it necessary to investigate sustainable alternatives in the design of
sportswear (Smith, 2020).

The creation of the Athleisure Shirt offers a chance to deal with these complex
issues. It satisfies consumers' inclinations for environmentally responsible products in
addition to meeting the pressing needs of active people in terms of comfort and hygiene
(Johnson, 2019). The Athleisure Shirt advances environmental awareness and lessens
dependency on single-use plastics, which increases its marketability and advances the
fitness gear industry's larger objective of sustainability (Garcia, 2021). In order to
address body odor and environmental concerns among fitness enthusiasts and athletes,
the research intends to determine the efficacy and market potential of athleisure shirts.

1. What is the demographic profile in terms of the following indicators

a. Gender
b. Age
c. Socio Economic Status
2. How may Packable Athleisure Shirt be describe in terms of the following
indicators (4Ps)
a. Price
b. Product
c. Place
d. Promotion
3. Is there a significance between the profile and the Packable Athleisure Shirt in
terms of Price, Product, Place, and Promotion?
14

In conclusion, this research explores the variables affecting players at Tiger City Gym
in Mandaluyong's marketability of packable sports shirts, with a particular emphasis on
the 4Ps Marketing Mix framework. Through the examination of demographic profiles that
include factors like age, gender, and socioeconomic position, the objective is to identify
prospective high-value customers and improve marketing tactics. Furthermore, our
analysis of perceived value and price provides insights into product positioning, helping
to better satisfy the varied needs of both male and female fitness enthusiasts and
enhance perceived value. Furthermore, our examination of marketing campaigns and
distribution plans emphasizes how important knowledge, accessibility, and usefulness
are to the success of the Packable Athleisure Shirt. This study uses a thorough
methodology to explain how the 4Ps and demographic profiles interact while offering
practical suggestions for maximizing each component of the marketing mix for both
first-time market entry and continuing customer engagement.

Hypothesis

Null: There is no significant relationship between the demographic profile and the
Packable Athleisure Shirt in terms of Price, Product, Place, and Promotion.

Alternative: There is a significant relationship between the demographic profile and the
Packable Athleisure Shirt in terms of Price, Product, Place, and Promotion.
15

Significance of the Study

This study's importance goes beyond its immediate focus to address important
challenges in the fitness sector as well as more general environmental concerns.

1. Managing Hygiene Issues: As the gym craze in the Philippines grows, it is

harder and harder to keep fitness centers clean and hygienic. The
overabundance of gym memberships exacerbates problems like body odor and
how we handle damp clothes, which affects fitness devotees' entire experience.
This study aims to address these issues by presenting the Athleisure Shirt, a
workable solution that improves mobility, ease, and hygiene during exercise.

2. Environmental Sustainability: Plastic pollution and environmental deterioration

are caused by the widespread usage of single-use plastic bags to carry exercise
equipment. The creation of the athletic shirt provides a sustainable substitute,
lowering dependency on single-use plastics and raising customer awareness of
environmental issues. Through the consideration of both immediate comfort and
broader environmental issues, this research advances the goal of sustainability in
the exercise wear sector.

3. Market Innovation and Consumer Preferences: This study provides insights

into consumer preferences and market trends by analyzing the marketability of
packable sports shirts among athletes at Tiger City Gym in Mandaluyong. The
goal of the study is to discover high-value customers and optimize marketing
strategies to satisfy the diverse needs of fitness enthusiasts by analyzing
demographic profiles and the 4Ps Marketing Mix framework. Through offering
valuable perspectives on pricing, product positioning, and promotion tactics, this
study educates industry participants and stimulates innovation in the fitness
apparel sector.

4. Contribution to Academic Knowledge: By using the 4Ps Marketing Mix

framework and Rogers' Theory of Fashion Diffusion to examine the acceptance
and adoption of athleisure shirts in the fashion industry, this study advances
16

academic understanding. The research contributes to the scholarly discourse on

fashion diffusion and marketing techniques in the fitness apparel industry by
examining consumer behavior and market dynamics.

In conclusion, our research advances market innovation, encourages environmental

sustainability, provides workable answers to hygienic issues in the fitness sector, and
advances scholarly understanding of the diffusion and marketing of fashion. The study
intends to offer insightful information to scholars, policymakers, and industry practitioners
through its all-encompassing approach.

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to investigate the marketability and acceptance of Athleisure

Shirts in the fitness industry, with a focus on athletes at Tiger City Gym in Mandaluyong,
Philippines. The goal of the study is to comprehend the variables that affect the uptake
of these shirts, such as demographic profiles and the framework of the 4Ps Marketing
Mix, which consists of strategies for product, pricing, place, and promotion. The study
intends to offer insights into customer preferences, market trends, and successful
marketing strategies for packable sports shirts by examining the relationships between
these variables. In order to accomplish its goals, the study uses Rogers' Theory of
Fashion Diffusion as a theoretical framework to conduct behavioral analysis. The stages
of awareness, interest, appraisal, trial, and adoption regarding the uptake of new fashion
developments such as athleisure shirts can be understood through the lens of this
theory. The 4Ps Marketing Mix framework serves as the main analytical tool, and while
the study's approach to behavioral analysis is informed by the Rogers Theory of Fashion
Diffusion, the main focus of the investigation is still on the market dynamics and
consumer preferences surrounding Athleisure Shirts.

The study's delimitations include its omission of other fitness centers in the
Philippines and its exclusive emphasis on Tiger City Gym in Mandaluyong. Furthermore,
although the study recognizes more general environmental and hygienic concerns in the
fitness industry, its main focus is on the marketability and customer acceptability of
Athleisure Shirts. The study focuses on the potential of Athleisure Shirts to provide
17

solutions to these issues rather than trying to fully address every facet of environmental
sustainability or hygiene management in gyms. In addition, the study's purview includes
analyzing gender, age, and socioeconomic profile profiles in addition to assessing the
4Ps—price, product, place, and promotion—as they apply to the Packable Athleisure
Shirt. These markers are crucial components for comprehending customer behavior and
market positioning. Nevertheless, the research does not encompass comprehensive
evaluations of additional plausible elements impacting customer conduct, such cultural
inclinations or brand allegiance.

METHODS

Research Mode and Design

The researchers adopted a correlational research design because a correlational

research design allows the researchers to investigate correlations between variables
without changing them (Smith & Johnson, 2017). The purpose of this study is to look into
the potential relationship between demographic characteristics and perceptions of the
Packable Athleisure Shirt in terms of pricing, product attributes, place, and promotional
techniques. Using a correlational design, the researchers can determine whether
specific demographic traits (such as age, gender, and income) are connected with
varying perceptions of the shirt's features and marketing methods. The design is
especially useful when the goal is to investigate potential links between variables rather
than determining causality.

The adoption of a Google Form survey is consistent with the correlational study
methodology. Google Forms enables the collection of quantitative data from a varied
sample of respondents, including demographic information and perceptions of the
Packable Athleisure Shirt across multiple dimensions (Brown & Jones, 2016). The
survey style assures standardized data gathering, making results easy to analyze and
interpret. Furthermore, the implementation of an ANOVA test enhances this design by
allowing for the investigation of potential changes in perceptions across demographic
18

groups (Lee & Kim, 2018). By testing the null hypothesis, the researchers hope to
determine whether there are statistically significant relationships between demographic
profiles and perceptions of the Packable Athleisure Shirt, which will help marketers and
product developers better understand consumer preferences and behavior.
Population and Sampling

Fitness enthusiasts who frequently use or have purchased the Packable

Athleisure Shirt from Tiger City Gym in Mandaluyong make up the study's target
audience. The researcher intends to use purposive sampling to choose 50 people
between the ages of 15 and 50, while the precise number of the target group is not
disclosed. According to Teddlie and Yu (2007), purposeful sampling is a non-probability
sampling technique in which participants are chosen in accordance with certain
standards pertinent to the study's goal. To ensure that the sample accurately represents
the target market, participants in this case are selected based on their acquaintance with
the Packable Athleisure Shirt and their position as Fitness Enthusiasts.

Purposive sampling was chosen by the researcher because it is a suitable method for
choosing individuals who have particular qualities that are pertinent to the goals of the
study (Creswell & Creswell, 2017). By focusing on Tiger City Gym Fitness Enthusiasts
who have used the Packable Athleisure Shirt, the researcher guarantees that the sample
offers insightful information about the elements affecting the product's marketability. This
technique enables a targeted approach, making it possible to get pertinent information
from those who are most likely to offer insightful product feedback.

Instrumentation

A survey questionnaire distributed via Google Forms was selected as the

research tool for this investigation. A survey questionnaire, according to Dela Cruz
(2019), is a systematic tool used to collect data from people, eliciting details about their
beliefs, attitudes, actions, or demographic traits. The purpose of the questionnaire is to
gather precise data about the Packable Athleisure Shirt and how Fitness Enthusiasts
see it, including what first drew them in, how helpful it is for working out, and how
marketable it is overall.
19

The survey questionnaire is divided into several pieces. The first set of questions asks
about the respondents' demographics. The participant's opinions of the Packable
Athleisure Shirt, including its comfort, toughness, and style, are explored in the parts that
follow. It may also be possible to include open-ended questions to give participants the
opportunity to offer more comments or ideas for improvement.

Statistical Treatment or Thematic Analysis

● The researcher will do multiple regression analysis for Statement of the Problem
number ONE, which seeks to identify the variables impacting Fitness Enthusiasts'
initial attraction to the Packable Athleisure Shirt. This statistical technique makes
it possible to investigate the link between a dependent variable (the shirt's first
attractiveness) and several independent variables (such as age, gender, and
fitness objectives).

● The researcher will perform an independent sample t-test for Statement of the
Problem number TWO, which focuses on evaluating the functionality and
usefulness of the Packable Athleisure Shirt during workouts. The mean
evaluations of perceived functioning and utility between the shirt's users and
non-users will be compared using statistical methods.

● The researcher will perform a chi-squared test of independence for Statement of

Problem number THREE, which attempts to determine the elements affecting the
marketability of the packable athleisure shirt. The association between categorical
variables, such as demographic traits and purchase intentions, will be
investigated using this statistical technique.

more people identified as LGBTQ++. As shown in Table 2, 30 participants, or 100% of
the total, were spread out throughout different income levels. In particular, 30% of the
respondents were in the Php 10,000-22,000 range, while 26% were in the Php
22,001-44,000 and Php 133,000 and above categories. The respective percentages for
the Php 78,001-132,000 and Php 44,001-77,000 groups were 3.33% and 13.33%. For
Table 3, this table shows the respondent’s age which shows that 16.67% of respondents
are in the 15-17 age group, then 60% fall in the 18-39 age group and the rest 23.33%
are aged 40 and above.

For the rest of the tables, which are tables 4 to 15, the table shows the statistical
difference or the p-value of each demographic and the 4Ps.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the researchers found out that the demographic in Tiger City
Gym, Mandaluyong is dominated by females but with not a large margin at 53.33%.
When the researchers looked at a respondent’s monthly income, the majority of the
respondents chose the lowest option which is Php 10,000-22,000 range at 30%, while
the rest of the percentage are evenly spread with a small margin. Furthermore, the
researchers looked at the respondent's age and the researchers found that the
respondents are mostly dominated in the 18-39 age group at 60%.

The researchers also found out that the fitness enthusiasts in Tiger City Gym,
Mandaluyong have no significant difference with the packable athleisure shirt’s 4Ps
Marketing Mix, except with the Economic Status with Product and Promotion.

Recommendations

In order to better understand the marketability of packable athleisure shirts and to

successfully address developing trends and consumer preferences, a number of
recommendations may be made for future research endeavors. To begin with,
longitudinal studies could be carried out to monitor shifts in market trends and consumer
behavior over time, offering insights into the product's acceptance and long-term viability.
Furthermore, by comparing data from various demographic groups or geographic areas,
tailored marketing strategies can be informed by differences in customer preferences
and market dynamics. Enhancing our comprehension of the elements influencing the
adoption of Athleisure Shirts could be achieved by integrating qualitative techniques like
focus groups or in-depth interviews, which could provide deeper insights into the
underlying motives driving consumer behavior. Engaging with stakeholders, such as gym
owners, fitness enthusiasts, and clothing makers, can also yield insightful viewpoints and
input that help shape marketing plans and product creation. Future research on
sustainability should take these factors into account as well, examining how the product
affects the environment and taking into account consumer desires for eco-friendly
solutions. Maintaining Packable Athleisure Shirts' relevance and competitiveness in the
fast-paced fitness wear market will require investigating market expansion opportunities
beyond typical exercise enthusiasts and closely observing shifts in consumer behavior.
Future research projects can aid in the creation of successful marketing plans and
promote long-term financial success in the market for athleisure shirts by taking these
suggestions into consideration.
