22. How does Oe substantiate that the soul of the entire humanity was salvaged by the
people of Hiroshima by their resilience in the effort to rebuild their lives.
This essay deals with how atomic bombing affected the Japanese -Absolute evil should be
balanced by absolu8te good- immediately after the bombing people of Hiroshima and
doctors tried to restore life in the damaged cities- humanism arises from such disasters-
Such a belief in the minds of American intellectuals cannot be trusted. Nightmarish hell
after the bombing couldn’t wipe out goodwill- It was making hell as humane as possible-
belief of Americans in this aspect of humanism is ‘paradoxical humanism’ - If the bomb
had been dropped in Leopoldville, Congo the story would be different- It would have
become a wasteland- In Hiroshima, the rebuilding started immediately- Oe compares the
atomic bombing to the flood in the times of Noah. Like Noah, people of Hiroshima tried to
restore lives- In Hiroshima life has frozen over- It is like cancer-Souls savaged by the people
of Hiroshima are souls of all human beings alive
23. How does Toni Morrison categorize the perils of free speech and the human response to
chaos in her essay?
Essay discusses 3 human responses to chaos of censorship. Dictators and despots restrict
writers and media using several methods. As writers voice their opinion against the rulers
they are harassed. Writers have to flee from their home- Suppression of writers is an
indication that something important against people have taken place.-Two main responses
to chaos:naming and violence. An unknown chaos it can be given a name. If chaos persists
then violence can be a reaction. The third response is stillness. It is passivity. It can also be
art . Writers should be protected during those times.Writers can translate trauma and give
it a meaning using their imagination
24. Critically evaluate the poem "On Killing a Tree" as emblematic of the connection
between living beings and nature.
Earth itself is a great organism- affected by man’s technological civilization-earth’s self-
regulating system has reached the limits of its capacity- in this poem Gieve Patel tells
human beings not o harm nature- Tree symbolises nature- Very difficult to kill a tree- hack
and chop to kill a tree- But it has regenerative power- Tree can be cut and converted into
dry timber- Poet urges to preserve nature
25. Describe the role of culture and identity in understanding refugeeism.
Refugees preserve their identity and culture in the host country- They go for acculturation
and integration not assimilation in the host country-They have a challenged identity
between historical inheritance and heterogeneous present- They want to preserve their
roots in a foreign land- There are tensions between changed realities and traditional value
system- Process of relocation and reconstruction is a complex process- Immigration has
great legal, political, social, economic and familial crisis-Their own roots and in a state of
constant flux- torn between nostalgia and acculturation- Primordialist approach is based
on identity as rooted in similarities in physical appearance and common culture-
Situational approach considers ethnic identity as an ongoing process- Environment defines
identity.
