Once the survey completed, the main works involved in constructing
a new line are as following:
• Land acquisition.
• Earthwork
• Trackwork
• Bridges & tunnels
• Stations, yards and other allied facilities.
• Signaling works
• Electrification works (if electrified line)
Earthwork
• The formation may be in an embankment or a cutting depending
upon the general topography of the area.
• A formation in an embankment is normally preferred from the
point of view or good drainage or higher than flood level.
• The height of embankment above highest water in the area
should be at least 60 cm.
Earthwork
• The width of formation will depend on
o the number of tracks
o gauge of tracks
o centre to centre distance between the tracks
o width of ballast layer
o width of trenches to drain off water
Plate Laying
Trackwork
Ballast Laying
Plate-laying
• operation of laying out of the rails and sleepers over the ready
formation
• the point from where the laying of track starts is known as the base
• the point upon which the new track is known as the rail head.
Plate-laying
Tramline Telescopic
method or method
side method
Mechanical
method
Tramline method
• Used when new track is laid next to the existing track
• two methods may be adopted
o A service road is constructed parallel to the proposed track and the
materials are transported to the site of the work
o A temporary rail line parallel to the proposed track and the materials
are transported in wagons.
• This temporary line is known as tram line
Tramline method
• all materials are taken from the central depot in material trains on the
existing track and are spread on the formation of new track
• after spreading, the work of assembling is started from one end manually
Tramline method
Telescopic method
• The material are transported in material train to the farthest point of
new track and unloaded.
• Materials are then transported to the point where work is in progress
and different components of track are assembled here.
Telescopic method
• 5 operations involve
o Collection and preparation of material at depot
o Transportation of materials from depot to work site
o Unloading of material at the worksite and carrying them to rail
head
o Fixing the rail to the sleepers and joining the two rails with fish
plate or by welding
o Packing of track for correct level and alignment
Mechanical method
