AIM
To prepare 100ml of M/10 solution of Mohr’s salt.Using this solution calculate the
molarity and strength of the given KMnO4 solution.

THEORY
I) Preparation of M/10 solution of Mohr’s salt: [ FeSO 4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O]

Molarity of Mohr’s salt = 0.1 M

Molecular mass of Mohr’s salt = 392 g/mol

Hence for preparing 1000 ml of 1M Mohr’s salt solution, the salt

required = 392 g

Therefore for preparing 100 ml of 0.1 M Mohr’s salt solution , the

amount of salt required is
Molarity = w2/M2 X 1000/V(ml)
0.1 = w2/392 X 1000/100
w2 = 0.1 X392 X 100/1000 = 3.92 g
II) Determine the molarity and strength of given KMnO4 solution:

Ionic equation :

PROCEDURE

 Prepare 100 ml of 0.1 M Mohr’s salt solution by transferring 3.92 g of

Mohr’s salt to a clean100 ml beaker.Add to this beaker about 5 ml of
conc.H2SO4 to check the hydrolysis of ferrous sulphate.Dissolve the salt in
the beaker using distilled water with gentle stirring.
 Transfer the entire solution carefully into the 100 ml standard flask through
the funnel and quantitatively make up to the mark using distilled water.
 Rinse the pipette with Mohr’s salt solution and pipette out 20 ml of it in a
clean titration flask.
 Rinse and fill the burette with the given KMnO4 solution.
 Add one test tube (approx..20 ml) full of 2M dil.H2SO4 to the solution in the
titration flask.
 Note the initial reading of the burette.
 Add KMnO4 solution from the burette to the titration flask containing the
Mohr’s salt solution till a permanent pink colour is imparted to the solution
in the titration flask on addition of last single drop of KMnO4 solution.
 Note the final reading of the burette.
 Repeat the above steps 3 to 4 times until the concordant value is obtained.

CALCULATION

As per the equation 1 mole of KMnO4 reacts with 5 moles of Mohr’s salt

M1 V1 [KMnO4] = M2 V2 [Mohr’s salt]

1 5

Therefore Molarity of KMnO4 , M1 = 1 M2 V2[Mohr’s salt]

5 V1 [KMnO4]

= 1 X 0.1 X 20

5X ----------

= --------- M

Strength of the KMnO4 solution is ________M X 158 = -------g/l

RESULT :

Molarity of the given KMnO4 solution is _______________M

Strength of the given KMnO4 solution is ________M X 158 = -------g/l
