GETTING STARTED WITH PIANO

OBJECTIVES

AT THE END OF THE LEESON THE TRAINESS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

1. DEFINE THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PIANO


2. IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHORDS AND
3. PERFORM A SONG FROM WHAT WAS DISCUSSED

WHAT IS A PIANO
Piano, a keyboard musical instrument having wire strings that sound when
struck by felt-covered hammers operated from a keyboard. The standard
modern piano contains 88 keys and has a compass of seven full octaves plus a
few keys.

PARTS OF A KEYBOARD

LESSON CONTENT:

1. UNDERSTANDING THE PIANO:


- FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE LAYOUT OF THE PIANO/KEYBOARD.
- LEARN ABOUT THE WHITE AND BLACK KEYS.
- KNOW THE NAMES OF THE WHITE KEYS (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) AND THE BLACK KEYS (SHARPS AND FLATS).
2. HAND POSITION:
- SIT COMFORTABLY AT THE PIANO WITH GOOD POSTURE.
- KEEP YOUR WRISTS RELAXED AND SLIGHTLY ELEVATED.
- PLACE YOUR FINGERS ON THE KEYS WITH YOUR FINGERS CURVED, USING THE TIPS OF YOUR FINGERS TO PRESS THE KEYS.

3. BASIC MUSIC NOTATION:


- INTRODUCE THE TREBLE CLEF (RIGHT HAND) AND BASS CLEF (LEFT HAND).
- PRACTICE IDENTIFYING NOTES ON THE STAFF AND CORRELATING THEM TO THE PIANO KEYS.

4. PLAYING YOUR FIRST NOTES:


- START WITH SIMPLE EXERCISES USING ONE HAND AT A TIME.
- PRACTICE PLAYING THE C MAJOR SCALE (RIGHT HAND AND LEFT HAND SEPARATELY).
- LEARN A BASIC FINGER EXERCISE SUCH AS THE FIVE-FINGER SCALE.

5. RHYTHM AND TIMING:


- INTRODUCE THE CONCEPT OF RHYTHM AND TIMING USING A METRONOME.
- PRACTICE PLAYING SIMPLE RHYTHMS SUCH AS QUARTER NOTES, HALF NOTES, AND WHOLE NOTES.

6. PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER:


- AFTER LEARNING THE BASICS, THEY ARE REQUIRED TO PRESENT ONE SONG
