Evolution because of intelligence in instruments

User base wants Open International Standards

– Fieldbus 1988, 1996, 2000 (ISA SP-50, IEC 61158)

– AS-i bus – 1993 (CENELEC EN50295)
– DeviceNet – 1994 (based on CAN protocol)
– Profibus DP – 1989, 1996, 2000 (DIN 19245,
EN50170, IEC 61158)
What features are needed in a bus?
 Must be safe and reliable
Must be fast enough for the application
 Must be cost effective
 Must be supported by manufacturers
– Instruments available for application
– Need multiple sources of products
Must be easy to integrate with the rest of system
 Availability of trained personnel
Must be able to upgrade without obsoletion

What is Fieldbus?
 Definition…

A digital, two-way, multidrop communication link

among intelligent fieldbus devices and
automation systems
Fieldbus Foundation?
 Unlike proprietary network protocols,
FOUNDATION fieldbus is neither owned by any
individual company, or regulated by a single
nation or standards body. The technology is
controlled y the Fieldbus Foundation, a not-for
profit organization consisting of more than 100 of
the world’s leading controls and instrumentation
suppliers and end users.

FOUNDATION Fieldbus Benefits
 Interoperability
– Any device from any manufacturer that conforms to Ff
standards will work with other registered devices.
 Plug and Play
– Automatic Address assignment.
– Device manufacturers provide Device Descriptions to
Host control system manufacturers to make
commissioning and configuring very easy.
 Superior Diagnostics
– Device Description “methods” allow interactive
diagnostics between host and field device.
Section 2: Engineering concerns

– Instrument
– Bid
 P&ID
 Loop Drawing
 Construction
 Commissioning
 Benchmarking
 Maintenance
Standards
Revise instrumentation standards prior to starting
a fieldbus project
New standards will be needed for device
selection, segment design
Revise standards for drawings, instrument list,
spec sheets
Functional Specifications
 Instrumentation is getting smarter; functional
specs should reflect this to take advantage of
technology
 Host Tested
 May want to include:
– Maximum execution times
– Diagnostic capabilities
Instrument List
 New fields may be needed
– Traditional I/O assignment not valid
– Bus or conventional
– Fieldbus segment assignment
– Transducer
Additional fields will make sorting easier
Instrument Specification Sheets
Need to be done after segment design
 New information needed for fieldbus
– Working voltage (9-32 v)
– Max current draw from bus
– Function block requirements
– Diagnostics requirements
– Interoperability standards

Requirements
Instrument Location

Instrument location must be based on

process requirements, not fieldbus
 On retrofit projects, instrument
location will have been established
Fieldbus design should be done after
instruments are located
Process Control Requirements
 The measurement device and control
element of a PID loop must be on the
same segment
The PID block may be located in the
transmitter, valve, or DeltaV controller
Monitor only or used in PID control?

 Required update time?

 Many factors determine where to

locate the PID block
Reliability Requirements

 Redundancy requirements
 Equipment segregation

 Distribution of critical loops

 Component redundancy
– LAS
– Power supplies
– H1 Interface
– Others
Assigning Fieldbus Devices to a Segment

 Maximum 16 devices per segment*

 Recommended loading

– Total of 12 devices per segment

– Total of 4 control loops per segment
 Devices should be placed on
segments based on location,
control function, and reliability
requirements
* FF Specification allow 32 separately powered devices and 12 bus powered devices

Retrofit Wiring
 Convert existing junction box by
jumpering terminals together for
devices on same segment
 Perform electrical checks on
spurs to see if existing wiring can
be used
 Eliminate conductor and shield
grounds for fieldbus wiring
Modular Wiring
 Pre-molded cables offer some
advantages
– keyed connections
– disconnect devices without affecting
other devices on the segment
– reduced installation time
– reduce incorrect wiring
– reduced chance of shorting bus
