Hollywood and Its Famous Sign


The City of Hollywood originated on a ranch near Los Angeles, California in 1853. By 1870, it
became a rich agricultural community. A man named Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his
wife Daeida came up with the name. His wife met a woman on a train that told her about
a town in Illinois with the same name. She liked it so much that she named their ranch
Hollywood.

The fi rst time a map of Hollywood was presented to the Los Angeles County recorder's offi
ce was on February 1,1887. The fi rst important street in town was called Prospect Avenue.
This street later became one of city's most important
streets, Hollywood Boulevard.

By 1900, Hollywood had turned into a small city with 500


citizens, and
businesses. The Hollywood sign was installed on Mount
Lee 23 years
later, in 1923. The sign at fi rst said Hollywoodland. It
advertised a hous
ing project near Mount Lee and it was supposed to last
only a year and
a half.

Today, the city of Hollywood is the center of the American movie in


dustry. The Hollywood sign has been a symbol of it since then. Many
people from all over the world come to
Hollywood to take a walk on
the Walk of Fame and take a picture with
their favorite movie star's star.
