FURTHER PRACTICE : REPORTED SPEECH

I. Reported statementS
Jim: "I don't like living here." (Direct speech)
Jim said (that) he didn't like living here. (Direct speech or Reported speech)
 Reported speech is used to tell someone what another person said.
“I live here” → He said that he lived there
 Reporting what was said at a different time, we have to change the tense to reflect the time which
we are reporting. For verbs, we need to go back a tense.
"I am playing football" → He said (that) he was playing football
PRONOUNS AND ADJECTIVES: CHANGES NECESSARY
First and second person pronouns and possessive adjectives normally change to the third person except when the
speaker is reporting his own words. (I = he, she; me = him, her; my = his, her; mine = his, hers; we = they...)
She said, “he’s my son”. - She said that he was her son.
“I’m ill”, she said. - She said that she was ill.
 When reporting, also remember to change:
Speaker’s words Reported statement
Will Would
Shall Should
Is going to Was going to
Present simple Past simple
Present continuous Past continuous
Past continuous Past perfect continuous
Present perfect Past perfect
Past simple Past perfect
Must Had to / would have to
Can Could
May Might
+ Expressions of time or place.

this that
these those
here there
now then/ at that moment
today that day
last (night) the previous (night)
ago before
tomorrow that night
next (week) the following (week)

- We only make tense changes when the reporting verb (say, etc) is in the past.
→ Tony says he is going to study architecture.
Tony says he was going to study architecture:
- We don't change the past perfect simple and the past perfect continuous.
I had seen the picture before. → He said he had seen the picture before.
- We also don't change would, should, could and might
She might take up painting,' → She said she might take up painting,
