Laboratory Work
The tests were made in Standard Atmosphere (65 ± 5% RH at 20 ± 2ºC) the sample having been freely
and continuously exposed to that atmosphere for at least 24 hours prior to testing.
Tensile Strength
The tests were made following the EN ISO 10319: 2008 procedure, "Geotextiles - Wide width tensile test".
Five M-way and five X-way specimens were prepared, each with an effective width of 200 mm and long
enough to enable a gauge length of 60 mm to be used.
The tests were made on a Testometric 200 kN CRE machine fitted with heavy capstan type jaws, set 200
mm apart (centre to centre of capstans) and operating at a strain rate of 20 ± 5% per minute.
The extension was measured from reference marks on the specimens, which were situated on the
specimen symmetry axis, parallel to the applied load, and separated by a distance of 60 mm (30 mm on
each side of the specimen centre), using a Testometric Type VE500 video extensometer and a pretension
of 1% of maximum load.
The specimen for test is clamped between circular rings with an internal diameter of 150 mm and a 45°
steel cone weighing 1 kg is dropped point first, through a distance of 500 mm on to the centre of the
specimen. The degree of penetration is measured by inserting a narrow angle graduated cone into the
hole.
