Definite identifiers

+ Singular Countable noun

The + Plural noun

+ mass noun

One main function: REFERENCE (to indicate that the speaker is referring to sth)

4 kinds of reference Anaphoric refers back to a previously mentioned item:

He sat down at the table and took a small box from his
pocket. The object felt heavy in his hands. Inside it was the key
to his future.

Cataphoric refers to sth following later in the text:

The lady who is standing there is my cousin.

Situational occurs when the speaker refers to sth which can be


identified in the environment or context:

Can you open the door?


What do you think of the government’s new decision?

Generic to refer to the class as a whole:

The olive grows only in warm climates.


The computer has changed our lives.

1- Identify the function of the underlined word as anaphoric, cataphoric,


situational, or generic. Remember that pronouns and demonstrative
determiners can also be used to refer.

1. Are you going to the bank today? SITUATIONAL


2. Have you heard? A teacher won the lottery! The woman will get $2,000,000!
3. Running is good for the heart.
4. The winter of 2001 was incredibly warm.
5. The students who have finished their exam, please remain in the room.
6. She saw a woman and a man on the bus. The woman looked foreign.
7. When was the telephone invented?
8. There was a car accident. Fortunately, the driver of the car was not hurt.
9. The man over there is collecting money for the blind.
10. Did the police find the person who stole your bike?
11. They listed everybody that’s currently working … I mean, I felt bad because a lot of the
people that are on that list were my clients for a long time.
12. I missed the beginning of the film, so I didn't understand the plot until half-way through.
13. The purpose of a pedagogical grammar is to teach the student self-checking tests for
assessing the student’s progress. Students should be advised to keep a difficulties diary, in
which they note those items which cause particular difficulty. Each item noted in this diary
should be given special emphasis in succeeding sessions.
