Question Statement of Complex Engineering Problem

1 Introduction:
The swat valley is famous for its scenic and natural beauty. It is a main attraction
for the local and international tourists. Many historical and world-famous archaeological
sites of Ghandara Civilization are also located in this area. Tourism in this area will be
improve. And hope that infrastructure will develop and will bring prosperity for the region.
In China Pakistan Economic Corridor CPEC the 3000 KMs long connectivity lines will
connect Gawadar deep sea with kashgar, a city of Xinjiang autonomous region in China.
Apart from this 3000 KMs rout, there would be numbers of routs and line to connect this
main rout.
Ckakdara-Kalam Expressway is also the part of CPEC Project, Construction of 4 Lane
Chakdara-Kalam Expressway 133 km. Figure 1 shows location of Chakdara- Kalam
Expressway. It will link with 81 km swat Motorway phase-1 already developed and
operational.

Question 1:
You are the pavement design engineer for KPHA and you have to design a conventional
flexible pavement for Swat Motorway (Expressway). Analyze your design keeping
below points in considerations.
It is estimated that the initial average daily traffic (ADT) will be *PIN/100 vehicles in both
directions of which 15% will be trucks. From a study of axle loading on swat motorway
phase 1, it has been determined that there will be 560.5 equivalent 18-Kip single axle
load per 1000 trucks. The subgrade material is silty clay (CL), seasonal resilient
modulus tests have been performed on the materials and the results shown in table 2
have been reported.

It is expected that drainage facilities will be provided to enable the pavement to be


completely drained in approximately two hours. It has been estimated that the pavement
structure will be exposed to moisture conditions approaching saturation about 10 % of
the year. Prepare Compare for two reliability factors, one on each end on the range
suggested by standards. Comment on the influence of the reliability factor on the
resulting pavement sections.

Question 2:

Analyze your pavement structure with the help of any pavement analysis
software and calculate critical stresses and strains. Show if your design is feasible
based on the stresses and strains value? Evaluate/discuss your structure using fatigue
and rutting criteria in pavement design.

The complex engineering problem have the following CEP attributes.


WP 1 Depth of knowledge Specialist knowledge on Pavement structure and Analysis is
required needed (WK4)
Engineering design for Pavement is needed. (WK5)
Engineering Practice is involved (WK6)
WP 2 Range of conflicting Students will have to propose a pavement structure for the
requirements highway and subsequently design the flexible pavement, its
complete drainage system along with detailed analysis of the
design using the software. All the components to be completed
by the students are interdependent on each other that also may
contradict at time. (WK4)
WP 3 Depth of analysis Preliminary analysis using Software is required where the
required appropriate layers pavement structure is to be evaluated.
Followed by the detailed evaluation of the selected section for
rutting and fatigue cracking.

get the data necessary to complete the work by whatever means/sources necessary. The entire
syndicate should discuss among themselves the procedure to obtain the necessary data.
