The Little Straw Bull with the Tarred Back

1 Once there was an Old Man who made tar and an
Old Woman who spun yarn into cloth. They did not have
much money and sometimes did not have enough to eat.
2 The Old Woman wanted the Old Man to make her a
bull out of straw.
3 “What will you do with a straw bull?” asked the Old
Man.
4 “I will take him outside to graze in the field while I
spin my yarn,” said the Old Woman.
5 The Old Man did not understand, but he saw that
the Old Woman was serious, so he made the straw bull
and covered it with sticky tar. In the morning, the Old
Woman took the Straw Bull out to the field and began to
spin. After a while, she grew tired and fell asleep.
6 While the Old Woman slept, a bear came out of the
forest.
7 “Who are you?” he asked the Straw Bull.

said the Bull.
9 “May I borrow some tar?” asked the Bear. “The dogs
have torn my side.”
10 The Little Straw Bull did not answer, so the Bear
decided to get some of the tar. When he touched the Little
Straw Bull’s back, his hand stuck, and he couldn’t pull it
away.
11 The Old Woman woke up and was surprised by what
she saw. She called her husband and said, “The Little
Straw Bull has caught a Bear.”
12 The Old Man seized the Bear and threw him into the
cellar.
13 On the second day, the Old Woman took the Little
Straw Bull out to graze again and, once again, she fell
asleep while spinning. This time, a Wolf came out of the
forest.
14 “Give me some tar, for the dogs have torn my side,”
said the Wolf.
15 “Take it,” said the Little Straw Bull.
16 When the Wolf tried to take some tar, he got stuck
to the Little Straw Bull’s back and couldn’t pull himself
away.

spinning. This time, a Fox came out of the forest.
19 “Give me some tar, for the dogs have torn my side,”
said the Fox.
20 “Take it,” said the Little Straw Bull.
21 When the Fox tried to take some tar, he got stuck to
the Little Straw Bull’s back and couldn’t pull himself
away.
22 When the Old Woman awoke, she called her husband.
The Old Man took the Fox and threw him in the cellar
with the Bear and the Wolf.
23 The Old Man thought about the animals in the cellar
and the cold winter quickly approaching.
24 “I am going to make us fine coats of bear skin,” said
the Old Man to the Old Woman. The bear heard the Old
Man and became very frightened.
25 “Old Man,” the Bear called. “Please do not hurt me. If
you set me free, I will bring you some honey.”
26 “Okay,” said the Old Man, and set him free.

you set me free, I will bring you a whole herd of sheep.”
29 “Okay,” said the Old Man, and set him free.
30 The Old Man continued. “The Fox’s fur is fluffy and
will make a nice collar for you,” he said to his wife. The
Fox heard the Old Man and became very frightened.
31 “Old Man,” the Fox called. “Please do not hurt me. If you
set me free, I will bring you chicken, geese, and ducks.”
32 “Okay,” said the Old Man, and set him free.
33 Soon, the Bear brought a whole hive of honey, the
Wolf brought a herd of sheep, and the Fox brought many
chickens, geese, and ducks. The Old Man and the Old
Woman were very happy. They became rich, bought
warm clothes, and were never hungry again.
