Exam1 Important Questions

1. The distance between Arjun’s and Alex’s house from school is 3 km 500m and
5000m respectively . Who stays closer to school and by how much?
[2 marks]
Distance between Arjun's house and school = 3 km 500 m
= 3 × 1000 m + 500 m
= 3000 m + 500 m
= 3500 m
[1 mark]

Distance between Alex's house and school = 5000 m

We know that, 3500 m < 5000 m

So, Arjun's house is closer to school in comparison to Alex's house to
school.

Difference between the distances = 5000 m - 3500 m

= 1500 m

Thus, Arjun stays closer to school than Alex by 1500 m.

3. A piece of red ribbon is 2 m 20 cm long. Half of this red ribbon is cut and
stitched with a piece of blue ribbon. If the total length of the ribbons joined in
this manner is 4 m 25 cm, what is the length of the blue ribbon (in m and
cm)? [ 5 marks ]
Solution:

Since we know that 1 m = 100 cm,

Length of the piece of red ribbon = 2 m 20 cm
= 200 cm + 20 cm = 220 cm
[ 1 mark ]

Half of this red ribbon = 220 cm ÷ 2 = 110 cm

[ 1 mark ]
Hence, 110 cm of red ribbon has been joined with blue ribbon.

Total length of ribbons joined in this manner

= 4 m 25 cm = 4 × 100 + 25 = 400 + 25 = 425 cm
[ 1 mark ]

We need to remove part of the red ribbon from 425 cm to get the length of
the blue ribbon.

Length of the blue ribbon = 425 cm - 110 cm = 315 cm

[ 1 mark ]
Expressing this in metres,
Length of the blue ribbon = 300 cm + 15 cm = 3 m 15 cm

8. Three horses A, B, and C are tied to a pole at different corners of a grass field.
If horse A is tied with a 4 m long rope, horse B is tied with a 3 m long rope,
1

horse C is tied with a 450 cm long rope, then find which horse can graze more
grass?
[ 3 Marks ]
The horses can cover a circular area. The length of the rope will be the
radius.

So longer the length of the rope, larger will be the circular grazing area for
the horse.

We know, 1 m = 100 cm [ 1 Mark ]

Length of the rope of horse A = 4 m
1

=4m+ m
