Andrea Camilleri
Andrea Camilleri ( Porto Empedocle , Sicily , September 6 , 1925 ), is
an Italian screenwriter, theater and television director and novelist.

Biography
Between 1939 and 1943 he studied at the classical high school
Empedocle di Agrigento where he obtained, in the second half of 1943,
his diploma. In 1944 he enrolled in the Faculty of Letters, he did not
continue his studies, but began to publish stories and poems. He also
joined the Italian Communist Party .
Between 1948 and 1950 he studied Direction at the Silvio d'Amico
Academy of Dramatic Art and began working as a director and
librettist. In these years, and until 1945, he published stories and
poetry, winning the "St. Vincent."
In 1954 he successfully participated in a competition to become an
official in the RAI , but was not employed due to his communist status.
However, he would join RAI a few years later.
In 1957 he married Rosetta Dello Siesto, with whom he would have 3 daughters. In 1958 he began teaching at the
Experimental Cinematography Center in Rome. For forty years he was a screenwriter and director of theater and
television. Camilleri began with a series of montages of works by Luigi Pirandello , Eugène Ionesco , T. S. Eliot and
Samuel Beckett for the theater and as producer and co-writer of Simenon 's Inspector Maigret series for Italian
television or the Adventures of Lieutenant Sheridan, which became very popular in Italy.
In 1978, he made his debut in fiction with The Course of Things ("Il corso delle cose"), written 10 years earlier and
published by a paid editor: the book was a failure.
In 1980 he published in Garzanti A thread of smoke ("Un filo di fumo"), the first book in a series of novels set in the
imaginary Sicilian city of Vigàta, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
In 1992 he resumed writing after a 12-year hiatus and published The Hunting Season ("La stagione della caccia") in
Sellerio Editore: Camilleri became a highly successful author and his books, with successive reissues, sold an
average of 60,000 thousand copies each.
In 1994 , The Shape of Water ("La forma dell'acqua"), the first novel in the series starring Commissioner
Montalbano (a name chosen as a tribute to the Spanish writer Manuel Vázquez Montalbán ), was published. Thanks
to this series of detective novels, the author becomes one of the most successful writers in his country. The character
becomes a national hero in Italy and has starred in a television series supervised by its creator.
