NURSING LEADERSHIP
JOURNAL, SCHEDULING, DAY to DAY ACTIVITIES
I've gained a lot of knowledge as I begin my duties as the head nurse at Assumption
Specialty Hospital and Medical Center. I was able to get by in the head nurse's environment
thanks to Ma'am Ofelia and my clinical instructor, Ms. Gail. The scope of this obligation
amazed me. I've discovered the following throughout my Head Nursing Duty:
In the same way, nurses are crucial to patient care, safety, and treatment. In our role as
head nurses, we supervise the nursing department, directly supervise the nursing team,
and make sure they adhere to all protocols and medical best practices—a critical
component of providing high-quality care and guaranteeing patient satisfaction.
As a head nurse in the health care profession, I learned that we fulfill both nursing and
managerial duties. In addition to managing the nursing department, head nurses oversee
the care of all patients by assigning work to other nurses and support staff and managing a
greater caseload of patients than staff nurses. Additionally, we act as the main point of
contact for the nurses, physicians, administrators, and other staff members in their medical
facility.
As far as managerial roles I learned that the Head Nurse plays a key role in maintaining
cleanliness, infection control, and patient safety in their respective wards this includes:
Hand Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water, or the use of alcohol-based
hand sanitizers, is critical for preventing the transmission of illnesses. Signboards indicating
the stages of handwashing were dispersed throughout ASHMC and put in every comfort
room.
Importance of endorsement
● Assures that patient improvement is noted
● Makes certain that patient care and information are transferred appropriately.
● Assists in providing constant attention
● Enables efficient communication between the workers of the previous shift and the
current shift
● Minimizes and saves more time.
Education and Training: Hospital staff receive education and training on infection control
practices to ensure they understand the importance of prevention measures and how to
implement them effectively.

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION AND THERAPEUTICS
During my shift, I discovered that the head nurse plays an important role in ensuring the
safe and effective administration of medication in a healthcare facility.
The head nurse is frequently involved in creating and revising drug administration rules
and procedures. These rules guarantee that drugs are provided properly, adhering to best
practices and regulatory standards. In addition, head nurses train nursing staff on drug
administration protocols, dosage calculations, medication safety, and the proper use of
medication administration equipment such as IV pumps and infusion devices. The head
nurse also monitors staff to ensure they follow these guidelines. They also oversee the
reporting of adverse drug events and medication errors, researching the core reasons, and
putting corrective measures in place to prevent them from happening again. This improves
pharmaceutical safety and patient outcomes.

Staffing
Ensuring the availability of sufficient qualified nursing staff to provide safe, efficient, and highly
effective patient care is an important duty of the head nurse. To allocate the right number of
employees and a safe workplace, they balance the needs of operations, the law, and employee
6
preferences. I gained knowledge about assigning nurse staff to specific patient care duties in
accordance with their qualifications, experience, and skills. In my capacity as the head nurse, it is
my responsibility to make sure that staffing levels are appropriate to meet patient needs and
provide top-notch care.
