At the end of a 50-minute period, the learners will be able to:

An independent clause is a group of words


that expresses a complete thought or idea.
A dependent clause is a group of words
that expresses an incomplete thought or
idea.
A dependent clause always begins with a
subordinating conjunction.
A complex sentence is a type of sentence
that contains an independent clause and
one or more dependent clause.

D. Guided Practice
Underline once the independent clause and
underline twice the dependent clause.
Then identify which of the clauses is the
cause or the effect by putting C or E on top
of which.
1. I’m going to the bank because I will
withdraw some money.

2. I made lunch after a I got home.

3. Submit the project so that we could


schedule a meeting tomorrow.

4. I really enjoyed the concert although the


music was too loud for me.

carefully. Identify which group of words
tells the cause and which one tells the
effect. Then, copy the sentences on your
paper. Underline the cause once and
encircle the effect.

1)The policeman issued a violation ticket to


the driver because he drove through a red
light
signal.
2)Michael came all the way from Australia
to help his fellow Filipinos in their Bahay
Kalinga
project.
3)The farmlands were dry and hard, for
there had been no rain.
4)The fire spread fast due to the strong
winds that hit the valley.
5)My mother loves green salads so much
that she brought all the bottled dips in the
counter.

Activity B. Write the correct word that


signifies cause-and-effect relationships.

F. Pair Share
Each pair will use one complex sentence in
giving ending of the fable. The teacher will
check the answer in each group.

The Rooster and the Rat


One day, a rooster is sleeping. A rat runs over the
rooster’s beak and the rooster wakes up. The
rooster is angry. The rat is scared. “I’m very sorry”.
Says the rat.
“Don’t eat me! I can help you one day.”
The rooster laughs. That’s ridiculous! It says.” You
are just a rat! How can you help me? ” But the
rooster is not angry now. The rat runs away.
One year later, the rooster is walking in the farm. A
big basket falls over the broiler .The rooster opens
its beak and shouts. The rat hears the broiler and it
runs to help.
“Don’t move” says the rat. ”I can help you.”
The rat bites the basket and makes a big hole. The
rooster is now free. ”Thank you, ” says the rooster.
You are little, but you are helpful.”

Identify the cause and effect of the given complex sentences.


Write C if the underlined words are the cause and E if it is an
effect.

____1. The farmer plants corn and vegetables because it can


provide money and food.
____2. The fisherman wakes up early to catch fish so that they
can share it to the people.
____3. My mother washes the dishes because she wants our
house clean.
____4. The vendors in the school are keeping our food healthy
and nutritious for us to be healthy and strong.
____5. The teachers are giving us more activities in school
because they want us to learn more.

V. Assignment

Write three (3) complex sentence and underline the cause and
encircle effect.
