GRADE 8 - Metals EBL - DISPLACEMENT REACTION - F
ENGAGE:
A student dipped a copper coin inside a beaker containing silver nitrate solution and observed
the change as shown in the picture given below.
What do you think can be the possible reason behind this change?
The possible reason behind this change is that copper is more reactive than silver. Therefore, copper displaces silver
from the silver nitrate solution, resulting in the formation of copper nitrate and deposition of silver metal.

Yes, metals react with salt solutions of other metals if the reacting metal is more reactive than the metal in the salt
solution. This type of reaction is called a displacement reaction.
Displacement reaction:
Displacement reaction is a chemical reaction in which a more reactive
metal displaces a less reactive metal from its compound.
AIM : To observe the action of the metals Zn, Mg, Cu and Ag on the following salt solutions:
HYPOTHESIS :
If the metals are kept in the salt solutions, then magnesium (Mg) metal can displace all
other metals from their salt solutions.
PROCEDURE :
Virtual Lab activity:

a) Select one of the metals and follow the instructions in the simulation to test its interaction with each
of the solutions.
b) Determine which combinations of elements and solutions react and which do not.
c) Record your observations of any changes you see in the metals or the solutions in Table below.
d) If you do not see any changes, write “No reaction.”
OBSERVATION :
EXPLAIN:
Based on the observations you recorded in the above Table, which metal is the most reactive and which one
is the least reactive?
