First, we will discuss how many optional subjects of CSS can be helpful in Compulsory subjects of CSS
Examination. After that, we will analyze each and every group of CSS optional including all their Subjects.

A: COMPULSORY SUBJECTS (600 MARKS)


A: COMPULSORY SUBJECTS (600 MARKS)

1. English Essay 100
• Almost all optional subjects help in English
Essay Paper.
• However, the importance of IR, Political
Science, Gender studies and Literature
subjects cannot be denied.
2. English (Precis and Composition) 100
• Reading a newspaper on a daily basis
• Writing English in full form everywhere
• Practising English Grammar book can be
helpful in this regard.
3. General Science & Ability 100
• All Science subjects especially Physics,
Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Geography and
Environmental Science subjects are very
helpful.
• Computer Science esp. Information
Technology and Telecommunications can be
helpful.
• Basic Mathematical Skills, concepts and
formulas are required.
• Besides, Logical Reasoning and Analytical
Reasoning and Mental Ability also assist in
General ability part of GSA.
NOTE: General Science & Ability syllabus is
very lengthy. In fact, they have left nothing to
put in this subject. In other words, any topic
in the world can become in its paper but yet
don’t lose heart. Solving past papers can help
you up to 40% in this subject.
4. Current Affairs 100
• No book is generally required for current
affair paper in CSS Exam.
• Daily reading of any Newspaper esp. Dawn
newspaper is considered the bible of CSS and
PMS Exams.
• However, IR paper-2 is another current
affairs paper but that is solved on the
terminologies of International Relations only.
Therefore, IR subject is really important for
Viva voice and CA paper as well.
5. Pakistan Affairs 100
• Onwards 2016, Pakistan papers are also
made on the basis of the current scenarios. In
some cases, you won’t differentiate between
CA and PA paper. Thus, Newspaper reading is
also essential for this paper nowadays.
• For the history portion, any history book can
be followed.
• While Political Science and Public
administration subjects topics are collapsed
with that of PA subject topics.
6. Islamic Studies OR Comparative Study of 100
Major Religions (For Non-Muslims)
• Hot issues of Muslim worlds throughout the
year are important for Islamiyat.
• Besides, Muslim Law & Jurisprudence is the
only subject that can serve in this subject.

• Needed a very strong Background
• Better for recent graduate or

• Low scoring before 2015 but after 2015
it is an average scoring subject

paper-2 is another current affairs paper
but that is solved on the terminologies of
International Relations only. Therefore,
IR subject is really important for Viva

• Fluctuation scoring 100-130
• Average Scoring subject.
