Question 1
Correct
CESSNA CHARLIE FOXTROT X-RAY QUEBEC TANGO, THIS IS CHEROKEE FOXTROT X-RAY QUEBEC QUEBEC ON FREQUENCY ONE
ONE NINE DECIMAL SEVEN, OVER. This is an example of...
Select one:
a. A ground station to an aircraft.
b. One aircraft to another aircraft.
c. A ground station to another ground station.
d. One aircraft to a ground station.
Answer: One aircraft to another aircraft. The thing you'll note when you're first beginning is how this all seems like another language and it can
be a lot of information to take in. Once you have memorized the phonetic alphabet and understand the procedures, this gets a lot less
confusing. The thing to listen for in this example are the two different types of aircraft that were mentioned. Again, this will be confusing for
new pilots, but hang around an airport for even a little while and you'll start to recognize the different types of aircraft manufacturers and this
will all begin to fit together easily.
The correct answer is: One aircraft to another aircraft.

Question 3
Correct
Between ground stations and aircraft, who controls all matters relating to the order and time of transmission, the choice of frequency and the
duration and suspension of communications?
Select one:
a. The pilot.
b. The Radio-telecommunications board.
c. The aircraft.
d. The ground station.
Answer: The Ground Station. In communications between aeronautical ground stations and aircraft stations, it is normally the ground station
that retains communications control. In communications between aircraft stations, however, the aircraft station being called is the controlling
station. This does not apply in the cases of distress or urgency communications, where the control lies with the station initiating the priority
call.
The correct answer is: The ground station.

Question 4
Incorrect
Select one:
a. Please repeat back what you have just heard to confirm.
b. Please flash your landing lights to confirm you understand.
c. I have received your message and will comply.
d. Let me know that you have received and understood this message.
Answer: Let me know you have received and understood this message.
When you're communicating over the radio, the proper procedure is to state your call sign in each transmission. This allows ATC to confirm
that the message/instruction/clearance was received and acknowledged by the intended aircraft.
If something was unclear, ask. When you acknowledge with your call sign, you are communicating that the message was received and
understood. If you don't do this, you may be asked to "acknowledge" the last transmission.
This type of communication is similar to when you are flying with your flight instructor. When you pass the controls back and forth for who is
controlling the aircraft, the proper procedure is to state, "You have control." After stating that, there should be an acknowledgement stating, "I
have control."
The correct answer is: Let me know that you have received and understood this message.
Question 5
Correct
Select one:
a. for the day it was issued.
b. for 48 hours only.
c. until a cancelling NOTAM is issued.
d. until the time quoted in the NOTAM.

After a Canadian privately registered aircraft has made initial contact with an ATS unit, which items may be omitted from subsequent
transmissions? The aircraft type and
Select one:
a. any registration letters omitted by ATS in the last communication.
b. the first two letters of the registration, if initiated by ATS.
c. the phonetic equivalents.
d. the first three letters of the registration.
Note in the question it states which may be omitted, however, the AIM gives us which remaining characters of the registration may be used.
The AIM states: 'Subsequent communications—May be abbreviated to the last three characters of the registration, as long as this abbreviation
is initiated by ATS.' Therefore, the first 2 letters of the registration may be omitted if initiated by ATS. TC AIM-COM 5.8.1 – Call Signs / Civil
Aircraft
The correct answer is: the first two letters of the registration, if initiated by ATS.
Question 15
Correct
Select one:
a. Please only respond when spoken to due to limited bandwidth.
b. International expression to indicate that silence has been imposed on the frequency due to a distress situation.
c. The transmission is near capacity, please limit communications.
d. Please go to your alternate, airport is closed due to distress.
Answer: International expression to indicate that silence has been imposed on the frequency due to a distress situation. This term isn't used
often due to the reason for it's use. It's really just the terms Mayday and Pan Pan that you need to be most familiar with. When it comes to all
the words and phrases, you should know what they all mean because any of these could be on the exam. However, you should use this as a
guide and not in an absolute way. Some of these words just aren't used very often, so they seem to be dropped. There are slight differences
across Canada which may affect the etiquette for how radio transmissions are used. Larger airports are more formal because there is lots of
traffic, smaller aerodromes are less formal.
The correct answer is: International expression to indicate that silence has been imposed on the frequency due to a distress situation.

Question 16
Correct
An operator wishing to address multiple stations in an area should use the term...
Select one:
a. 'General Call to All Stations.'
b. 'Multiple Stations...'
c. ‘Station in the area...'
d. ‘All Stations...'
Answer: 'All Stations...' All Stations General Call When an operator wishes to establish communication with any station within range or in a
certain area, the call should be made to 'ALL STATIONS' using the same procedure as a single station call. Example: ALL STATIONS, ALL
STATIONS, ALL STATIONS THIS IS TORONTO AIR RADIO (three times if necessary) (ROC-A) 5.7.1 Note: To start with, making a call to 'All
Stations' is rare, perhaps most common in a Mayday call from someone in a distress situation, or from an airport station relaying a distress call.
Both of those scenarios are rare.
The correct answer is: ‘All Stations...'
Question 17
Incorrect
In communications between two pilots in two different airplanes, which aircraft is the controlling station?
Select one:
a. The aircraft making the call is the controlling station.
b. The aircraft station being called is the controlling station.
c. Both aircraft stations share control.
d. The aircraft containing the pilot with most experience is the controlling aircraft.
Answer: The aircraft station being called is the controlling station. When you think this through, this should make sense. If you're reaching out
to another aircraft, that aircraft controls the communication so that you can be sure that your communication is being broadcast clearly and
understood. Remember, just because you make a broadcast doesn't mean it was received or understood. Your duty is to ensure this by
listening for a reply and affirmation that your message was received.
The correct answer is: The aircraft station being called is the controlling station.

Question 18
Correct
Select one:
a. Refer to the airport screen upon landing.
b. Listen (on frequency).
c. You have been placed in observation for the time being.
d. Have extra caution.
Answer: Listen (on frequency). This term 'Monitor' isn't used as frequently as many of the other terms, but you should know what is meant if
the term is used. You'll often hear a frequency given when this term is used, so it should be pretty common sense what you are to do when
given this instruction.
Question 19
Correct
The spoken word for 'distress' which should be used immediately at the transmission of a distress call is...
Select one:
a. Attention.
b. Pan Pan.
c. Mayday.
d. Help.
Answer: Mayday In radiotelephony, the spoken word for distress is 'MAYDAY', and it should be used at the commencement of the first distress
communication. The distress signal indicates that a person or station sending the signal is: 1. threatened by grave and imminent danger and
requires immediate assistance; or 2. aware that an aircraft, ship or other vehicle is threatened by grave and imminent danger and requires
immediate assistance.

Select one:
a. Nine minutes past the hour.
b. Nine minutes past the hour zulu.
c. Almost ten minutes past the hour.
d. Niner minutes past the hour.

The standard format in which time is expressed during radio communications is...
Select one:
a. Any time zone, assuming you declare which one you are using.
b. Eastern standard time.
c. The twenty-four hour clock system.
d. The twelve-hour clock system.
Answer: The twenty-four hour clock system. The point of this question is to make sure you know how to actually express time within the
twenty-four hour clock system. Time should be expressed and transmitted by means of four figures, the first two denoting the hour past
midnight and the last two the minutes past the hour. 12:45 a.m is expressed as 0045, 12:00 noon is expressed as 1200, 11:45 p.m is expressed
as 2345, 12:00 midnight is expressed as 2400 or 0000, 1:30 a.m is expressed as 0130, 1:45 p.m is expressed as 1345, and finally, 4:30 p.m. is
expressed as 1630.
The correct answer is: The twenty-four hour clock system.

Question 24
Incorrect
Select one:
a. As emergency traffic.
b. As urgent traffic.
c. As distress traffic.
d. As non-existent.
Answer: As distress traffic. Essentially, all transmissions made after the initial distress call are considered as distress traffic. In distress traffic,
the distress signal 'MAYDAY', spoken once, shall precede all transmissions. This procedure is intended to alert stations not aware of the initial
distress call and now monitoring the distress channel that traffic heard relates to a distress situation. All stations that are aware of distress
traffic, and that are not taking part in it, are forbidden to transmit on the frequencies being used for distress traffic until a message is received
indicating that normal working traffic may be resumed (cancellation of distress). (ROC-A) 6.13
The correct answer is: As distress traffic.
Question 25
Correct
Select one:
a. taxi to a full stop in position on the runway and take off without further clearance.
b. complete the pre-take-off check before taxiing onto the runway and taking off.
c. taxi onto the runway and take off in one continuous movement.
d. back-track on the runway to use the maximum available length for take-off.
Answer: taxi onto the runway and take off in one continuous movement. To expedite movement of airport traffic and achieve spacing between
arriving and departing aircraft, take-off clearance may include the word “immediate.” In such cases, “immediate” is used for the purpose of air
traffic separation. On acceptance of the clearance, the aircraft shall taxi onto the runway and take off in one continuous movement. If, in the
pilot’s opinion, compliance would adversely affect their operations, the pilot should refuse the clearance. - TC AIM-RAC 4.3.8 – Takeoff
Clearance
The correct answer is: taxi onto the runway and take off in one continuous movement.
