Historical background of UA
The University of Antique holds the distinction of being the only state university in the province.
The University’s humble foundation is worth recalling. On January 19, 1954, the school
marked its official beginning as Antiques School of Arts and Trades or ASAT. This noble effort to
make education accessible primarily for Antiqueno was made possible through the efforts of
the late Congressman Tobias A. Fornier during his term as Antique’s Representative to
Congress; thus, R.A. 857 was approved creating ASAT, originally a trade school.
Upon approval of the act, classes were formally opened during School Year 1954-1955
with no definite school site. Yet the prospect of a new school was a great and novel idea and
triggered the enthusiasm and spirit of cooperation among all sectors.
The Sibalom Elementary School offered an office for Mr. Fermin Taruc , Sr, the first
superintendent of the school, and his staff. Within the period of three months, the frequent
consultations with the provincial and municipal officials finally yielded an encouraging result.
The school site for the first time trade school in the province was finally determined which is
the very site where UA now stands.
After going through initial preparations-ascertaining what courses to offer, advertising
the school, and campaigning for enrolment-the administration was confronted with the most
important element an educational institution cannot do without , a school building. Again, the
Bayanihan spirit which deeply ingrained, among the Sibalomnons came alive. In no time at all, a
building consisting of five rooms made of nipa and bamboo came to existence. Kind-hearted
and civic-spirited citizens of Sibalom, led by the equally generous and well-loved Mayor, the
late Santiago A. Lotilla, spearheaded the task.
With the classrooms ready for occupancy, classes were formally opened on July 1 ,1954,
with 188 Secondary Trade and 53 Trade –Technical education students who took turns using
the temporary building for instructional purposes.
The first secondary vocation courses and two-year trade technical courses offered were
major in Ceramics, Automotive Mechanics, Furniture and Cabinet making, Building
Construction, and Food Trades.
Responding to the needs of AntiqueÑos , the school offered four-year courses such as
Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education in 1968 , and Bachelor of Science in Practical Education in
1976. ASAT was made the center for the offering of Master of Arts in Food and Nutrition in 1978, of
Master of Arts in Teaching Vocational Education in 1979.
With the support of Assemblyman Arturo F. Pacificador who passed Batas Pambansang Blg.912,
ASAT was converted into college, known as Polytechnic State College of Antique (PSCA),on November
14, 1982 with Dr. Godofredo E. Gallego as the first president.
On November 1, 2000, pursuant to the pertinent provisions of RA 7722, otherwise known as the
“ Higher Education Act of 1994”. And RA No. 8292, otherwise known as the higher Education Act of
1997, as well as compliance with the provisions of the Philippine Medium term plan, two schools-
Antique College of Agriculture (ACA) and Tario Lim Memorial Antique School of Fisheries (TLMAS) were
integrated into PSCA (now UA).
Antique College of Agriculture (ACA) started as Antique National Agricultural School in 1952 by
virtue of Republic Act No. 510, while Tario Lim Memorial Antique Scholl of Fisheries (TLMASOF) started
as Tario-Lim Memorial High School in 1948, and was merged with the Antique School of Fisheries by
virtue of Republic of Republic Act 248 in 1955.
Aside from offering the secondary Vocational Fishery Curriculum in 1956, TLMC offered a post –
secondary Fishery Technical Education Curriculum; and courses Diploma in Fishery Technology was
started in 1971, Bachelor of Science in Fisheries in 1976, and Bachelor of Science in Fishery Education in
1996.
The integration of ACA(now UA Hamtic Campus) and TLMASOF (now UA TLM Campus) has a
significant impact because it paved way for more course to be offered in each of the campuses; thus,
providing better opportunities for alternative access to quality higher education for the personal
development, professional advancement, and technological efficiency of the youths of the province of
Antique.
The college became more daring innovative in its curricular offerings as it opened the Distance
Learning Program in 2001. Night classes were also offered for Industrial Technology and Business
Administration courses.
Through the efforts of Congressman Exequiel B. Javier, and that satisfying the requirements for
university hood ,PSCA was converted into university by virtue of R.A. 9746 signed on November 10,
2009 with Dr. Victor E. Navarra as the president.
