The Mysteries of Pueblo Bonito


Pueblo Bonito is a town that was built in the southwest part of the United States by the Anasazi
Indians, an ancient people of New Mexico. The town is now in ruins, but the parts that are still
there challenge historians, archeologists, and other professionals who study its history.
• The town was built sometime between the years 850 and 1150. It took many years to
build. Nobody is sure why it took so long.
• Some of the buildings were three to five floors high and had many rooms. Some buildings had
large round rooms that were big enough for 400 people. There were also many smaller round
rooms that could fit up to 50 people. Some of these rooms had no windows and were very
dark. Nobody is sure what they were used for.
• Wide roads went out from the town for 10 to 30 miles into the desert. Nobody knows for sure
why they were built, either.
• Around 1150, the Anasazi started leaving Pueblo Bonito. Nobody really knows why.
