II. PROGRAM DETAILS

Background Information and Statement of the Problem
Statement of the Problem
Despite widespread awareness of the health risks associated with
tobacco usage and concerted efforts to discourage smoking and support
cessation, the prevalence of tobacco consumption remains a formidable
global public health challenge. Major obstacles continue to stand in the way
of the goal of creating a society free of tobacco use, making it necessary to
create innovative approaches and interventions to address this issue.

Background Information
Smoking continues to be one of the world's leading preventable
causes of mortality, as it raises the risk of lung cancer, heart disease,
respiratory ailments, and other conditions. Because smoking is so addicting
and common, it takes a multifaceted strategy to stop it, including support
networks, legislation, and education. The following are some essential ideas
for quitting smoking:
- Nicotine replacement therapy: Nicotine gum, lozenges, nasal sprays,
and inhalers are examples of short-acting nicotine replacement
treatments that can assist you in overcoming strong cravings. When
combined with long-acting nicotine patches or one of the non-nicotine
stop-smoking medications, these short-acting therapies are typically
safe for usage. Prescription non-nicotine stop-smoking medications
include varenicline and bupropion (Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, and
other brands).
- Avoid triggers: Determine what your triggers are and create a strategy
to either avoid or deal with them without smoking. Avoid creating the
conditions for a smoking relapse. For example, if you would normally
smoke while you talk on the phone, bring a pen and paper close by so
you may doodle instead of smoking.
- Delay: Tell yourself that you have to wait ten more minutes before
giving in to your urge to smoke if you feel like you are about to give in.
Then, use that moment to divert your attention to something else.
Consider visiting a smoke-free public area. You might be able to get
over your need for tobacco with these easy tips.

By employing a comprehensive approach that combines these

strategies, societies can make significant strides in preventing smoking
initiation, reducing tobacco consumption, and ultimately improving public
health outcomes. Therefore, with the work of this group conducting thorough
research on how to prevent and quit smoking, we brought up ideas such as
conducting a barangay symposium that will be held in Barangay 452 with the
guidance of our Community Health instructors, Ms. Marijane V. Anacito and
Mr. Karl Recongco. This project will be conducted on the 2nd of May with a
total number of ideally but not limited to 30 participants, and 25 student
nurses conducting the program.

Overall Goal
The student nurses’ project aims to create a smoke-free barangay
where people are empowered to make decisions about their health and
well-being. This means lowering the rate at which people start smoking by
implementing extensive education and awareness campaigns and by
providing readily available resources and encouraging surroundings to assist
smokers who are already in the process of quitting. The ultimate goal is to
reduce the burden of tobacco-related illnesses and enhance global public
health outcomes for people and communities through health education.

D. Scholarly Connection
The intervention involves conducting role-play demonstrations
illustrating the physiological impacts of smoking on the body, alongside health
education sessions delivered to the community. This approach aligns with
Bandura's Social Learning Theory (Bandura, 1977), which emphasizes the
importance of observational learning and modeling in behavior change.
Through role-play scenarios, individuals have the opportunity to witness and
engage with the consequences of smoking, potentially fostering greater
awareness and motivation for quitting.

Furthermore, integrating health teaching into the intervention

enhances the community's knowledge of smoking-related health issues and
equips them with information necessary for making informed decisions about
tobacco use. Recent studies, such as those by Johnson et al. (2022),
underscore the effectiveness of comprehensive educational interventions,
including role-play demonstrations and health teaching, in raising awareness
about smoking's detrimental effects and promoting healthier behaviors among
community members.

II. PROGRAM DETAILS

A. Background Information and Statement of the Problem

Background Information
Environmental Sanitation is composed of various elements including
managing solid waste, pest and vector control, and all other external
environmental factors that may negatively affect people’s health,
development, and survival. In this program, the student nurses will
specifically tackle management of solid waste and ways on how the
community can make their environment better and cleaner.

According to WHO, improper waste disposal can result in

contaminated water, soil, and air, which can have a ripple effect on
individuals’ health. This also includes harmful practices such as burning
hazardous waste in an open area that can endanger the entire community.
Children and elderly who are unaware are especially vulnerable and could
potentially acquire health risks. Below are some ways that each family could
practice for proper management of waste materials to help the environment
heal.
- 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
- Reduce: Minimize the waste that you produce. For instance,
plan your meal in advance, cut out the plastics, and use
reusable bags when going out.
- Reuse: Consider reusing items as much as you can instead of
throwing them. For instance, you may opt for your clothes to
be donated or have them up on sale.
- Recycle: Try to make new things out of your old one.
- Proper waste disposal: Divide your waste into biodegradable,
non-biodegradable, and recyclable waste. This way, you are helping
the environment to have less pollution.
- Composting: At home, you may find a place where you can set up
your compost bin. Then, you may start layering your food scraps,
animal manures, greens, and browns. This way, you reduce landfill
wastes and create a soil packed with nutrients.
- Remove stagnant water: Regularly clean and empty any containers
that could possibly have water and become breeding grounds,
including tires, pots, and toys.

Overall, having these four (but not limited to) tips applied to the
program will open opportunities for growth. To elaborate, not only will it
reduce environmental pollution and its negative impacts on health, but it will
also foster a sense of shared responsibility within the community.

Statement of the Problem

Environmental issues have always been one of the health problems
that the Philippines continues to face, particularly improper waste
management that starts from homes. And a community that continues to
apply the said practice may further burden the environment. Given that,
manifestation of pollution, climate change, mixed up landfills, clogged
waterways, and significant threat to people’s overall health arise. Hence, it is
imperative to come up with innovative activities that could ensure lasting
results while engaging the community as a whole.

B. Overall Goal

The student nurses’ main goal is to make sure everyone in the

community knows how important it is to keep the environment clean for the
public’s health. Proper sorting of waste reduces pollution, creating a safer
and healthier environment. By addressing the risks of getting diseases like
dengue and leptospirosis, which are linked to poor sanitation and waste
management, we can further emphasize the importance of these practices.
Collaborative efforts in recycling, safe disposal, regularly discarding of
stagnant water, and waste separation do not only foster a stronger
community but also ensure that the health of future generations is protected
and has a great foundation. The student nurses strive to create an
environmentally aware culture, ensuring a sustainable future. Through
teaching and involving everyone in the community, individuals will be
empowered to make better choices about waste, leaving a legacy of caring
for the environment. Together, a big difference in the health of our community
and the planet will be made.

D. Scholarly Connection
The program consists of several activities intended to assess
community members' knowledge of waste product segregation and motivate
them to dispose of waste in the appropriate bins, specifically by role playing
and active participation of the community. According to (Andaleeb, 2022) in
his article, “The psychology of improper waste disposal in Dhaka” human
behavior is the primary cause of the issue, particularly people's indifference to
disposing of waste. They see it as someone else's issue. As a result, people
do not take the initiative to dispose of rubbish or take action. And since the
person is where the vicious cycle starts, it is necessary to start with them. In
light of this, it would be preferable if we began teaching individuals in their
homes, for example, how to separate their own waste, to eventually get them
to adopt this practice throughout their community.

As stated by (Taylor, 2020) one of the essential necessities of today's

community is a clean and green environment, where pollution does not exist
and living quality is improved. However, community life has suffered greatly
as a result of unending pollution to the environment in the forms of air, water,
and soil contamination. Numerous ailments result from the poor air quality,
contaminated land, and non-potable water. Consequently, pollution needs to
be addressed and reduced for improved survival. Only when the fundamental
requirement of clean air and land is met can a person lead a healthy life.

Environmental cleanliness plays a critical role in lowering the

incidence of dengue and leptospirosis. In order to reduce the development of
these diseases, environmental sanitation activities include waste
management, better water storage techniques, and making sure that correct
drainage is maintained. The risk of leptospirosis is increased by improper
waste management, which causes an accumulation of trash and draws
rodents, the main reservoirs of Leptospira bacteria (Hagan et al., 2016).
According to Murray et al. (2013), insufficient methods of storing water and
disposing of trash produce breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, which
spread dengue.

Reducing standing water and removing mosquito breeding grounds

are two ways that effective environmental sanitation lowers the spread of
dengue. Better drainage systems also avoid floods and the ensuing
contaminating of water sources, which is crucial in managing outbreaks of
leptospirosis (Costa et al., 2017). Thus, one of the most important public
health measures to lower the prevalence of leptospirosis and dengue fever is
investing in complete sanitation practices and infrastructure.

POST-ACTIVITY REPORT

Activity Title: “Sakit sa Bawat Hithit: Sigarilyo, Ano Nga Ba Ang Epekto Sa’yo?.”
Date/Time: May 23,2024 / 9:00am - 10:00am
Venue: Barangay 452 Zone 45 District IV Manila, Sampaloc, Philippines

Narrative:

I. Brief description of activity

The implementation program that we had conducted was entitled “Sakit sa

Bawat Hithit: Sigarilyo, Ano Nga Ba Ang Epekto Sa’yo?.” It was aimed to educate

and create an impact to a certain target audience, which are smokers. Together with

the whole class of NUR216, we all organized the program, providing consideration to

the community, and our possible attendants. We have encountered some challenges

with regards to implementing the program itself. The first conflict was that the

community was not made aware of the program, so we all worked together to roam

around the barangay, giving out invitations to let them know about our program. Next

challenge was that our provided venue was along the side of the road, so we had a

lot of barriers, such as noise disturbances, the sun’s rays hitting the participants’ skin

directly, and a lot of people passing by. Despite all these challenges, we proceeded

to conduct the program as planned, but of course, with consideration to our current

situation. We had a health teaching session about smoking cessation, and

conducted games related to our topic which our participants surely enjoyed. There

were a lot of prizes, raffle, food, and free health services such as BP and CBG

monitoring, which made our participants choose to stay until the end of the program.

After this we realized how important it is to have the heart to serve the people,

enough to work out the presented challenges, and to strive to do better next time to

be able to help a lot more people in the community.

III. Results of Participants’ Evaluation of the Activity

Feedback on the Program/Activity:

- Participants overwhelmingly praised the program facilitated by the National

University. Descriptions ranged from "maganda" (beautiful) and "okay" to

more enthusiastic remarks such as "nakakaalerto" (alerting) and "the best."

Many appreciated the educational aspect, highlighting that the program

helped them understand the health risks they face, particularly those related

to smoking. They also valued the program's accessibility, noting that regular

visits to their barangay and continuous health monitoring were particularly

beneficial. Some pointed out that the program was especially helpful for

seniors and those in poor communities, addressing health issues and

providing necessary medical support.

Learnings from the Program:

- Participants reported gaining significant knowledge from the program,

particularly about the health risks associated with smoking, such as heart

attacks and lung cancer. Some shared personal stories of health

improvements after quitting smoking. Others mentioned learning about their

own blood pressure and health status, emphasizing the importance of regular

health checks. Overall, the program succeeded in educating participants on

the adverse effects of smoking and the importance of health maintenance.

Impact on Participants and Livelihood:

- The program had a positive impact on participants' lives and livelihoods.

Some have quit smoking, resulting in better health and reduced medical

expenses. The program also provided activities and information that helped

keep participants engaged and informed about their health, especially for

seniors. Participants appreciated the regular monitoring and health

check-ups, which gave them a better understanding of their physical

condition and helped them take proactive steps in managing their health.
Achievement of Program Objectives:

- Participants agreed that the objectives of the program were met. The

program raised awareness about the dangers of smoking and its health

implications, which alarmed and motivated many to consider quitting. It was

particularly effective in helping underprivileged individuals, especially seniors,

monitor their health. The program successfully communicated the health risks

of smoking, leading to a greater understanding and prompting action among

participants.

Interest in Continuing Similar Programs:

- There was strong interest in continuing such programs. Participants believed

that these initiatives benefit the community by educating them about the

effects of smoking and promoting healthier lifestyles. They expressed that

such programs are particularly beneficial for low-income communities and

seniors. The consistent interest reflects the perceived value and positive

impact of the program on the participants' health and well-being.

Suggestions for Future Programs:

- Participants suggested several community programs for the future. They

recommended exercises for the elderly, diabetes awareness and healthy

eating programs, free medical check-ups, and the provision of vitamins and

medications. They also expressed a desire for programs aimed at children,

as most current initiatives focus on adults. Participants emphasized the need

for health and livelihood-related programs to continue improving community

well-being.

In summary, the post-evaluation of the anti-cessation program revealed that

Kapaligiran”
Date/Time: June 06, 2024 / 09:00am-11:00am
Venue: Brgy. 452, Zone 45, District IV, Sampaloc, Manila, Philippines

Narrative:

I. Brief description of activity

A program entitled “Lamang Ang May Alam: Pagpuksa sa Epidemyang Dulot

ng Maruming Kapaligiran”, is an activity conducted to influence the community, regardless of

age, to prioritize their health above anything else. The whole class of NUR216 organized the

program and helped each other throughout the process. Although we didn’t manage to

gather professional speakers, we tried our best to have an informative and fun discussion

among the participants – which the group gathered by roaming around the barangay.

Furthermore, due to some unfortunate circumstances, particularly the limited space and hot

weather, we were not able to continue with our program flow as planned. Despite the on the

spot changes, we were able to successfully pull it off and had fun along the process. To be

specific, the group decided to improvise some activities to make the attendees stay, such as

free CBG and BP taking, zumba, and additional games. Aside from that we made sure that

all participants have their token of appreciation, regardless if they won a game or not.

Raffles and food were also given by the end of the program to ensure that they are engaged

and are well appreciated. Overall, I can say that it was such an informative and fun

discussion to make – and that it was heartwarming to see that all of the attendees enjoyed

and were actively listening and participating for the whole program. In the future, we will

strive to conduct better programs for the community.
