Course Description:
This course is intended for students studying health care management or preparing to
conduct research on the performance of health care organizations. This course
examines theories of organization and management, with an emphasis on the
application of these theories to health care organizations.
The course acquaints students with the historical development of organization /
management theory, drawing on the disciplines of sociology, psychology,
organizational behavior, political science, and health economics. Major theoretical
perspectives (including open and closed, rational and natural system perspectives) are
discussed.

Course Objectives:
The objectives of the course are: (1) to familiarize students with alternative
theoretical perspectives, or schools of thought, in organization and management
theory relevant to health care organizations; (2) to enhance critical thoughts using
concepts from organization and management theories; (3) to encourage the analysis
of organizational problems from alternative perspectives;(4) to improve oral and
written communication using the vocabulary of organization and management theory.

Course Requirements:
The sources of reading required for each course session is unlimited as many as
related to the topic. Each student is encouraged to read various materials prior to
class to express his (or her) viewpoints of the topic of the session. Once the student
is chosen to present his (or her) viewpoints of the topic of the session shall be well
prepared. (i.e., preparing the slide made of Microsoft power-point), others are
welcome to join the discussion. The class is conducted as a combination of lectures
and intensive discussions. Several power-point slides and a final paper will be
required. Paper requirements are described as, “Micro-soft word software, Time New
Rome type, No.12, no more than 20 pages, and must include references”. The
deadline of the final paper is due on 2018/06/13. The course grade is based on oral
presentation, including slides made with Microsoft power-point, (60%), and the final
written paper (40%).
