For Grade 6
Section One

Passages from the Quran

Ayat ul Kursi

Translation:

Allah. There is no god but He, the living, the self-subsisting, eternal. No slumber can seize Him
nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His
presence except as He permits? He knows what is before or after or behind them. Nor shall they
compass any of His knowledge except as He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the
earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the
Supreme.

A: Theme

Theme of this long verse is Allah Himself. It’s a verse of sura Al-baqara, a Madni sura. It begins
with the expression of the shahada (declaration of oneness of Allah) and then elaborates various
aspects of unity of Allah that make Him matchless. Allah is free from all weaknesses and
limitations, has perfect knowledge of all times, is not dependent on anyone for His survival and
enjoys autonomy in exercising His authority. His authority and His rule encompass the entire
universe. This makes Allah not only unique but also elevates Him to the heights, we just can’t
imagine and that is mentioned in the Quran as:

“then He established himself on the throne” (10:3, 13:2)

B: Importance of the Theme:

This passage tells Muslims to believe in Tawhid in terms of Allah’s uniqueness, majesty and
glory. The theme is important for Muslims as it crystallizes the belief of Tawhid and trains them

to condemn shirk. There is repetitive mention of Allah’s authority, unlimited knowledge and
powers in order to strengthen the faith of its readers

The objective is to remind Muslims that Allah alone is to be worshipped and no authority can be
compared with him. Many Muslims recite this verse regularly to reiterate Allah’s power and high
position as compared to any worldly author.

2: Surah Al-An’aam (6 . 101—103)

Translation:

101. To Him is due the primal origin of the heavens and the earth: how can He have a son when
He has no consort? He created all things, and He has full knowledge of all things. 102. That is
Allah, your Lord! there is no god but He, the Creator of all things: then worship Him: and He has
power to dispose of all affairs. 103. No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision: He
is above all comprehension, yet is acquainted with all things.

A: Theme:

Theme of this passage is Allah in Himself. It elaborates some of the fundamental aspects of unity
of Allah (Tawhid). It describes Allah as the originator of universe and rejects any kind of
misconception of Allah having any family. It also refers to His unbounded knowledge, power
and grasp on His created world. The passage further stresses on the sublime nature of Allah and
inability of human imagination to encompass Allah’s person, though He himself can see to the
unfathomable depths, as endorsed elsewhere in the Quran: “for God is He Who understands
the finest mysteries” (22:63).

B: Importance of the theme

This passage is important for Muslims to clearly understand the doctrine of Tawhid in terms of
Allah’s nature and powers. Muslims need to learn that though Allah is too sublime to be

perceived, He is everywhere and all powerful. The Quran reminds Muslims this repeatedly. The
passage also categorically negates the false belief of Allah having any wife or children and thus,
it strikes at the roots of shirk (associating partners with Allah). Muslims, in this way, develop a
clear concept of tawhid and feel themselves bound to adore Allah only. They remember that
shirk is the only unpardonable sin in the sight of Allah.

Section Two: Ahadis-e-Nabvi ‫ﷺ‬

Hadis No 1

Translation:
‘Religion is sincerity.’ We said: ‘To whom?’ The Prophet said: ‘To Allah, his Book, his
Messenger, the leaders of the Muslims and to their common people

Teachings of the Hadis:

Islam demands sincere and genuine faith. This sincerity is needed in the fundamental beliefs as
well as towards the leaders and the members of the community. This means strong belief in
Tawhid (oneness of God), the divine message of the Quran and the messenger of Allah who
conveyed this Message to us. Also, the leader of the community, who follows the Quran and
Sunnah, should be sincerely followed:
“And obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those charged with authority among you.”
(4:59)
Finally, Muslims should believe in respecting and caring for the fellows in the community.

Actions:

Belief in Tawhid, Quran and the last Messenger is demonstrated by following the eternal
guidance of the Quran and Sunnah. Muslims should observe the five pillars of Islam:
As for cooperating with the leader of the community, Muslims should remember the speech of
Abu Bakr (RA) on his election as caliph. Help me if I am in the right, set me right if I am in the
wrong.

Similarly, sincerity towards fellows should be expressed by being kind, polite and respectful to
them.

Hadis No 2

Translation

None of you believes until he wants for his brothers what he wants for himself.

Teachings of the Hadis:

Muslims are bonded together with common faith. This bond of fraternity has been established
by God Himself, and so, all Muslims should make it part of their faith. A heart without love and
care for the fellow Muslims is devoid of true faith, & so, genuine faith is linked with affection
for the other members of the community. “None of you believes” refers to imperfect faith, and
not absence of faith. This means that any believer might fall prey to a lack of love for fellows.

Actions:
Muslims should negate selfishness, promote spirit of sacrifice and love for the fellow Muslims.
They should develop a sense of collective welfare and make efforts to ensure comfort and
benefits for others as much as for himself.

True believers should not look down upon others and should not taunt them or call them by
offensive nick names. They are also not supposed to break ties with fellow brothers and should
take initiative in re-establishing good relations.

Section Three:

Islamiyat Summer Work for Grade 6. May 2024

History and Importance of Quran

Revelation of the Quran between 610 and 623 A.D

The Qur'an is Allah's Book which He revealed to the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬through the Angel Gabriel.
Everything that has to do with the Qur'an is, therefore, directed by Allah. It is true that the
Qur'an was revealed at different times and places and some verses were revealed to provide
guidance with regard to particular occasions and events. However, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬could be
receiving Qur'anic revelations of different surahs at the same period in time.

Revelation of Quran continued for 23 lunar years (610 to 632 AD), 13 years in Makkah and 10
years in Madina, 86 Makki Surah and 28 Madani. Present Quran Srahs are as per guidelines of
prophet )SAW(‫ﷺ‬.

Some examples of Suarahs in present complications are:

Surat Al Alaq was first surah but placed as 96. (1/96)

Surat Al Mudassar was second surah but placed as 74. (2/74)

Surat Al Muzammil was third surah but placed as 73. (3/73)

Surat Al Qalam was fourth surah but placed as 68. (4/68)

Surat Al Akhlas was fifth surah but placed as 1. (5/1)

So all surahs and their text are as per the Holy Prophet’s ‫ ﷺ‬continued directions, reciting in daily
prayers and also in Ramadan, and also as per command by prophet to Zaid ibn Sabit (RA) and
others from time to time.

The Qur'an is the final message which Allah has sent to mankind. It was revealed to the Prophet
Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬through the Angel Gabriel, who brought the Prophet complete verses or parts of
verses, or passages or complete surahs, as he was commanded by Allah. When the angel
brought down to the Prophet Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬a passage of the Qur'an, he did not bring it written
on a piece of paper [or other material]. He recited it to him and the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬immediately

Islamiyat Summer Work for Grade 6. May 2024

memorized it. Allah promised him that He Himself will see to it that the Qur'an is kept
complete and intact and properly read. This order is contained in Quran:

"We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and we will assuredly Guard it (from
corruption)." [Al- Hijr 15:9]

When the Prophet Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬received a portion of the Qur'an, he called in one or more of
his scribes to write it down. He employed for this task a number of his companions whose
number totaled 29. Many of these were of the highest caliber in their faith and integrity. They
included all the first four caliphs, Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), Hazrat Umar (RA), Hazrat Usman
(RA) and Hazrat Ali (RA). Those scribes wrote the Qur'an on various forms of writing material
which was available to them. These included sheets cut out of the branches of the beet tree or
other writing sheets made of wood, animal hide, stone or bones.

This started even in the period when the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬and his companions were a small
community in Makkah. Many of the companions of the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬had some parts of the Qur'an
written down and treasured in their homes. The revelation did not proceed with only one surah
at a time, but the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬might have continued to receive parts of several surahs at the same
time. When a passage was sent down to him, it was followed by an order from Allah, through
the Angel Gabriel, indicating its position in the surah to which it belonged. These manuscripts
did not form a single or coherent set. The Qur'an is divided into 114 surahs, some of which are
short, while others are very long.

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬did not keep anything written down in his own home. But most of his
companions who were with him in Makkah and Madinah memorized much of the Qur'an, and
some of them were able to learn it all by heart. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬used to teach his companions
either individually or in groups. We note that Abdullah ibn Masood, a learned companion of
the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, was pleased to assert that he memorized more than 70 surahs as he learned them
directly from the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬. In Ramadan every year, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬used to revise the Qur'an
with the Angel Gabriel to ensure that he did not overlook any verse or part of it. In the last year
of the Prophet's ‫ ﷺ‬blessed life, Gabriel recited the Qur'an to him twice. To the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, this
was an indication that his life on earth was approaching its end.

Compilation of Holy Quran:

It was in the first year after the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬had passed away that the need to compile the
Qur'anic documents in a single and easy to use. Hazrat Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) made the
proposal to the first caliph, Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), shortly after the battle of Yamamah in
which several hundred Muslims were killed; seventy amongst those killed were the ones who
had learned all or most of the Qur'an by heart. Hazrat Umar (RA) feared that the number of
those people would rapidly decrease as a result of battles the Muslim state might have to fight.
Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) approved the proposition and entrusted the task to Hazrat Zaid ibn
Sabit, who was not merely a scribe entrusted by the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬to write down the Qur'anic
revelations but he was also a young man who had learned all [of Qur'an] by heart and witnessed
the Prophet's ‫ ﷺ‬final recitation of the Qur'an.

Islamiyat Summer Work for Grade 6. May 2024

Certain rules were laid down including one which conditioned that no written text would be
acceptable unless two people of integrity would testify that it was indicated by the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬
himself as a part of the Qur'an. When Hazrat Zaid completed the task, he handed it over to Abu
Bakr who handed it over to Hazrat Umar whom he nominated his successor when he died a
year later. During the reign of Hazrat Usman, the third caliph, the need to have reference copies
of the Qur'an became apparent. Usman instructed Zaid ibn Sabit and four others to write down
five more copies and he sent one copy to each of the main centers in the Muslim State to serve
as reference to scholars and students of the Qur'an.

Hazrat Usman (RA) also ordered that all documents which were at variance with these copies
be burned down. This was to make sure that those pieces of writing materials on which parts of
the Qur'an were written and to which the writer might have added a word of explanation, as
was the habit of some of them, were burned, so that they would not be confused later as having
a completed text. We should realize that Usman's action was a highly commendable one and
enjoyed the support of all the surviving companions of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, many of whom had
learned the Qur'an by heart. People were thus able to have their own copies of the Qur'an and
check these against the master copies that Hazrat Usman sent to the various cities.
