Brief introduction into system and radio characteristics

Radio systems and Antenna’s

An Antenna is designed to meet the specification of the system and frequency of the radio system it works
with.
There are four types of antenna that are used within the Medicare range and product.
A Whip Antenna
A Di pole Antenna
A Helical Antenna
A Track Antenna
An antenna length is determined by calculations of working out the radio wavelength: -
Radio signals travel at the speed of light (300.000. km/second) or 186,000 miles/second.)
The Calculation to work out a whip antenna length is as follows.

Wavelength = Speed-of-Light/Frequency
Speed-of-Light = 300,000,000 Meters per Second

There for: -
300’000’000 m / 433’000’000 hz = wavelength of 0.692 metres

Above is for Illustration purpose’s and shows a complete positive and negative cycle of a radio wave.
If you used an Ariel (Antenna) 0.69 metres long
You wouldn’t see anything “positive cycle minus negative cycle equals zero”
Only interested in the positive cycle
0.692 m = full wave antenna.
0.346 m = ½ wave antenna
0.173 m = ¼ wave antenna which is what we use on hand units, Panels and other tx’s.

A Whip Antenna
Positioning of a whip antenna or di-pole antenna is critical to get efficient performance.

This illustration shows the radiation of a whip antenna. So basically, if a whip/dipole antenna is placed on its
side the range directly vertical up and down would be great but the horizontal range will be less than efficient.
There’s also a dead spot on a whip antenna known as a null area. This is where no radiation or pattern
transmits or receives from the antenna as the diagram below. These characteristics need to be taken into
account when setting up radio systems.

A Di pole Antenna
A (High Gain antenna) is a whip antenna but with a ground plain added for efficiency. This is called a dipole
antenna.
On a dipole antenna there is a physical electrical connection to a ground plain this always needs to be
vertically pointing to the ground (earth) to be effective. These characteristics need to be taken into account
when setting up radio systems. On a dipole antenna there will be a mark showing an E or an electrical earth
symbol.

Page 5 of 64 210217ME

The Hot end of an antenna needs to be at least 300mm from any other electrical source or foreign body or
elements. This is because of radiation bounce as shown in the drawing below: -

In this diagram the pattern of radiation quickly bounce’s and dissipates because of the earth grid ceiling above.
An example of this was when a Medicare Engineer investigated a site that had stopped working because of a
metal filing cabinet. Placed next to the paging tx.

Helical antenna

This type of antenna is used on Htm 6002 Pendant and Htm 6032 ODL because it radiates differently.

It’s much broader and like a sphere but the distance does fall of a bit hence a room unit is slightly better than a
pendant in respect to overall range. Positioning of a helical antenna isn’t as critical to get efficient
performance.

Track Ariel
Same characteristics as a whip antenna and widely used in modern electronics.

Setting up the Repeaters with time delay. Maximum of Six RTx’s.

HTM 4031 or HTM 6031 Signal Booster/Repeater (Rtx)

The HTM4031 Repeater can be used to extend the radio foot print and coverage of sites, it will retransmit all
events received regardless of House Code and ID.

If more than one repeater is required, they should be set to different repeat delay times to avoid signal
clashes. The Default repeat delay is set to value 2. (Approximately 2.5secs), this can be changed using
HyperTerminal or real term.

There is an event memory within the RTX and it won’t repeat the same event if received again within 5
seconds. This is to prevent endless repeat loops.

If a CALL from HC2 ID123 is repeated, it will not repeat that event again for 10 second. However, if another
call type e.g. ASSISTANCE is received from that unit, it will be repeated.

Power supply
The HTM4031 or HTM 6031 takes 4 x AA rechargeable batteries and requires a 12VDC500mA
supply/charger.
When setting the time delay within a Repeater. The RTX board needs to be connected to HyperTerminal or
Real Term using the RS232 connections GND, TX, RX and be powered up.

Create a Hyperterminal or Real Term connection.

Select the appropriate COM port.
Settings:
Baud rate: 38400
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Flow Control: None.

To change the default delay time value type z followed by the value, e.g. to
set it to delay value of 3, connect with Hyper Terminal type, z3

The board will reply with a # hash to acknowledge the command. The board is now set to 3. If multiple
repeaters are required, set them to alternative values of 1,2 or 3.

When programming the below model of repeater ensure that the jumper link across pin 1 & 2 as shown below:
-

In April 2020 we released the below version enabling you to set the time delay to either a 1,2 or 3 second
delay with the positioning of jumpers appose to a computer interface and three LED indicators were added to
the design: -

Red = Flashes to indicate that the rtx is receiving a signal.

Blue = Indicates the power status, constant is healthy, flashing means its running on battery.
Green = Flashes to indicate that the rtx is transmitting a signal.

HTM4031 Signal booster / repeater in production from March 2020

onwards.
Set the New protocol link before turning on the power, if changed when the rtx is powered then the rtx will
need to be power cycled (turned off for 3 seconds and then turned back on).

With the link on the rtx will receive new protocol and transmit on both old and new
protocol.
With link off the rtx will receive old protocol only and transmit on old protocol only.
(pre March 2021)

The repeaters (rtx’s) are used for building the radio footprint of a nurse call
system. Ensuring that all call points and display panels communicate within that
foot print enables engineers to create a system within any building configuration
and at scale.

If more than one rtx is required they should be set to

different time delays to avoid signal clashes. These time
delays are set with the plug on onboard jumpers which can
be set to either a 1,2 or 3 second delay.

When more than six repeaters are used within range of each other, then the system design needs to be re-
configured into a network system, as infinite event loops and timely delays are inevitable.

There is a ten-event memory within the rtx thus, the rtx won’t repeat the same event if received again within 5
seconds, this is to prevent endless repeat loops.

If a transmission is received from HC 020 Unit Number 123 with a call type of C (Call) then the same incoming
event will not be repeated for 10 seconds, however if another call type E (Emergency) is received from the
same device, it will be repeated.

The on/off switch is positioned on the top right-hand side of the device, under a
removable plastic 20mm cap.

The power supply = 12VDC640mA plug top supply/charger.

Onboard battery backup is provided by a -GEB 703450 lithium +3.7V 1300mAh

Three LED lights are built into the rtx, red indicates that the rtx is receiving a signal, blue indicates the state of
power, being constant if a power supply is present and flashing if the power is interrupted and battery backup
is used. The green led indicates when the rtx is transmitting.

Rtx’s in production December 2020 onwards have the functionality of being addressable for fault diagnostics
and polling. The repeaters unit number is programable via the onboard dip switches: -

These switches are binary +1 and control the unit number of the repeater, the house code is hard coded and
non-changeable at 998

So, from left to right switches in the down position are off (0) and in the up position the switches are enabled

For the display panels to act a zone called repeater on house code 998 will need to be added to the
configuration file and locations will need to be provided within the software, polling will also need to be
enabled.

When a display panel doesn’t

receive a poll from an rtx within
24 hrs a “PLEASE TEST” event
will display with the location
description provided by the
configuration file.

As explored in training and with ref to the above diagram.

• The Rtx’s are used to build a radio footprint of the building, on the 1st floor split as per range test.
• The display panels are used to receive the transmissions from the transmitters/call point and display
the description as required as per the software written.
• The varied range of call points are transmitters and send out a signal when activated.
• If required a paging tx can be used in the middle of the building to interface with the display panel
and hand held pagers, being considerate to the antenna’s characteristics.

HTM 6500 and HTM 6000 series hand unit.

Both 6000 models have a built in Infra-Red receiver which can be used to trigger an event with the IR
pendant transmitter. (This needs to be turned on which is explained later within this manual.) The HTM6001
had two sockets were as the HTM6003 had a pull cord.

The HTM 6500 range has various models for different environments within the care sector. With both two
sockets and a pull cord on each unit.

All models have an automatic monitoring function for situations such as bed occupancy monitoring.

The units have seven programmable modes of operation.

Nurse Attendance (Mode 1) – Default mode of call point when manufactured.

Auto Reset (Mode 2) – The call point automatically transmits a reset signal two minutes after its activation.
One Shot (Mode 3) - The unit transmits the signal twice within a 12 second window and then returns to
standby. (Ceiling pull cord or ip67 door bells)
Nurse Call (Mode 4) –Changes the call type of the Attendance button to an Assistance.
Two-way Mode (Mode 6) – Providing a test tool for range testing and building the radio footprints.
Two-Button Mode (Mode 100) – This mode locks all buttons except the orange call button to deter from
nuisance alarms. For staff to reset a call or activate an emergency the green ATD button must be held in first
before pressing the other button.
I-Button Mode (Mode 200) – Turning on the use of the iButton with the HTM6500iB call point.
Emergency Pull Cord (Mode 9) – October 2019 onwards the pullcord can activate an emergency.

Polling.
All Medicare call points automatically send a polling call type every 8 hours, this cannot be turned off in the
call point but can be ignored by the system selectable within the programming tool. Within the Polling
process the unit will also measure* the voltage within the batteries and send a Low battery signal opposed to
a polling signal if the batteries require changing. The display panel when polling is activated, will create a
table within the desktop software to register all of the active call points, if the table is not satisfied every 24
hours a PLEASE TEST call type will appear on the display panel for the call points that are missing from the
table.

*The measurement of batteries depends on the mode that the call point is operating in. If the call point is
operating in mode 5 with the Ir receiver turned on the low battery trigger measurement is set at 2.75volts. If
the call point is operating in any other mode type, then the low battery trigger measurement is 2.1 volts.
The batteries are also measured each time the reset button has been pressed and the event has finished.

Battery Replacement
Units are battery operated and use two AA Alkaline batteries.
A low battery warning will be displayed on the system when the batteries need changing as explored in the
above paragraph. To replace the batteries, unscrew the cover plate on the back of the call point, or remove
the trunking model from the fixed back box. Replace the two AA batteries carefully observing the correct
polarity, re-fit the cover plate, or back to the back box. Finally make a test call.

After you have installed the driver from the link (note a computer reset is normally required) connect the lead
via a USB extension cable to your laptop and set up realterm as shown above and listed below: -

Baud 1200, Port depending on your laptop/pc,stop bits 1,parity none, databits 8, Flow control None.

Within the send field the following commands work as described below: -

R002 clears all the set/inputted codes and resets the house code to 002 (this is good pratice as all call points
are built to default house code 001 unit number 001 and false activations should be deterred.) Albeit overdoor
lights will only work on house code 11 and above. ( Note that odl’s are coded to house code 010 unit number
001 in manufacture for test purposes. Hence we say house code 11 and above to avoid all odl’s iluminating on
site.)

H020 will set the over door light to house code 020 meaning it is a zone indicator and will activate for all calls
on house code 020 (commonly known as house code mode.)

If you require to use Linked house code mode you will need to program the two house codes using the above
command ie. H011 and then program the second value H012. Once the two house codes are programmed into
the odl, the link will need to be put on the bottom two pins for the odl to work. This means that House code 11
unit 1 will also be reset by House code 12 unit 1, for use when ceiling pullcords are paired.

I020012 will set the over door light to work for house code 020 unit number 012 meaning that it is a single unit
indicator and will only activate for house code 020 unit number 012 (commonly known as ID mode.)

To program an over door light: -

Power the light up, the led’s will illuminate in sequence red, pink, blue.
Plug the Programming board on as illustrated on the previous page.
Press and release the programming button on the over door light, the light will illuminate blue.
Within the Send field type the required code (IN CAPS) and click on SendASCII
The overdoor light will dual tone and flash pink/red to give a visual acknowledgment that it has coded.
The real term window will also provide feedback: -
For House code mode H### feedback is in the form of Program = ### (note that 0 is left blank in the window)
For ID mode I###### feedback is in the form of Program = ###### (note that 0 is left blank in the window)

Repairing and updating HTM4000 7” Display Panels.

Brief and explanation of operation.

The standby screen on the display panel will show three important pieces of information.

1. In the Top right corner the Panel Version shows (note that a V1 had no number present), V2, V3, or V4
which was released December 2018 the large change was that the usb port is on the bottom of the panel for
the USB entry.

Panel versions V1 and V2 are designed to interface with mobile device manager. To repair and update
these panels you will need to connect to the panel using a mini usb lead in the middle hole on the left
hand side of the panel to connect to a windows 7 pc running mobile device manager.

Panel Versions V3 and V4 are designed to be accessed without using mobile device manager. Instead
a standard usb memory stick in the bottom hole on the left hand side of the V3 panel can be used
with a recovery.exe file which will start the display panel up in Windows CE from this point you can
re-work the panel. The V4 panel is the same process as the V3 but with the usb port on the bottom of
the panel.

By pressing the MENU button, the bottom left hand side of the screen changes to show a description which
will show as “Version 3.01B 300”

2. This text shows the first number reference always ending in a letter which is the Application software. At
time of print 3.01B ( This will change as time goes on. )

3. The second set of numbers show the Radio board software version. (If required Radio boards can only be
updated within Medicare Systems and sometimes will need replacement dependant on chipset)

Previous to version V104 only shows basic functions of early systems.

V104 onwards accessory calls were added to the system.
V200 onwards shows Id’s for Infrared systems were added to the system.
V205 onwards Cardiac Call was added to the system.
V300 onwards works with I button systems with id’s above 99.

Repair or updating the display panel.

Dependant on the Version of the Panel you will need to either use mobile device manager or Windows CE and
a USB memory stick.

The goal is the same, to replace all the files within the flash disk folder with the latest version available.

V1 and V2 Panels will need to be interfaced with using mobile device manager

Guidance notes on networking a Medicare System

Radio systems of all types rely on repeaters or signal boosters (RTX’s) to cover large areas. As the size of nurse
call systems are growing in size the use and need of RTX’s grows with it. Due to the nature of radio and the
avoidance of clashing calls, time delays are introduced within the RTX’s to provide the system with stability
and efficiency. However it becomes inefficient to have more than 6 RTX’s within a system as the additional
delays introduced will also result in an overall delay on the system. To overcome this issue we can convert the
way that we build and design systems. Historically radio systems have worked on radio alone. Medicare have
built into their system design the ability to network the display panels using a standard computer network.
This enables the Medicare nurse call system to cover large buildings or sites whilst removing the need to add
multiple RTX’s.

Both the HTM4100 and the HTM4000 display panels can be networked via a router:-

The display panels will need numbering within the Medicare programmer The Master as ID 1 and then
incremental as the panels are added to the system as slaves ID 2, ID3 and so on…

When the ID is changed from 1 within the Medicare programmer a new window opens providing a box to
enter a broadcast IP:-

Head Office & Repairs Centre: Medicare Systems Ltd, Jade house, 87-89 Sterte Avenue West, Poole, Dorset BH15 2AL

T: 0800 849 5123 www: medicaresystems.co.uk

refreshingly different
Radio Nurse Call Specialists I The Choice of the Professionals
Page 62 of 64 210217ME

The broadcast IP requires the IP address of the master panel or ID 1. Everything else is the same as a standard
radio Medicare System.

When the system is configured as a network system all panels receive via radio and then address the master,
which in return distributes the active calls site wide via the computer network.

If there is a failure with the computer network then the display panels will all revert back to being standalone
radio display panels and show local calls from the transmitters (call points) within range. A flashing warning

icon will also display on the front screen to identify an issue with the network.

Obtaining the IP and MAC addresses of a HTM4100 15” display panel

Exit the Medicare application (MENU, ENGINEERING, 4312, EXIT APP)
Click the windows start button, type cmd in the windows search bar.
Open the Command Prompt application and type: ipconfig /all (note the space)
The IP address and MAC (physical) address will be shown:-

The IP address will typically be displayed as IPv4 Address and be something like: 192.168.?.??

The MAC address will typically be displayed as Physical Address and be something like: 00-1C-23-1E-99-A9

Page 63 of 64 210217ME

The IPv4 address of the master panel ID1 is the IP number that needs to be entered into the Broadcast IP box
within the Medicare programmer, this is so all of the slave panels know the address of the master panel and
can communicate with it.

Obtaining the IP and MAC addresses of a HTM4000 7” display panel

Display panels running on windows CE7 can be identified by the standby screen showing HTM4000v4 in the
top right hand side of the screen and also have a USB point on the bottom of the panel. This version was put
into circulation from December 2018.

Insert a usb stick with the CE7recovery.exe file on it “recovery.exe” into the bottom of the panel.
Restart the panel by pressing and releasing the button on the front of the display panel.
The panel will then restart in Windows CE7, not in the Medicare application.
Within windows CE7
Click on the Start button using a stylus,
Click on the Programs button using a stylus,
Followed by selecting command prompt,
Using the built in keyboard type “ipconfig /all” (note the space) within command prompt.

The below detail is then shown:-

Remove the USB stick and restart the panel which will restart within the Medicare application.

The MAC address is shown as the as the physical address,

The IPv4 address is the IP address for use within the broadcast IP box when a 7” panel is being used as a
master:-

Fault finding

The red network symbol normally flashes up to 14 times on startup of the Medicare application if this
continues then there may be an issue:-

1. Check to see if the display panel is visual to all the other Medicare display panels on the network:-
Within windows command prompt type “arp(space)-a” this will list all the IP addresses and the MAC addresses
visible on the network. Check to see if the master panels IP address is within this list. If not then there is a
problem with the network or the firewalls and security is blocking it.

2. Check whether the firewall is turned off.

Within the windows control panel:-
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Defender Firewall:-

3. If the firewalls are turned off and the master panel is visual.
Check that the master panel’s IP address has been recorded correctly and check that it has been entered
correctly into the broadcast IP box within the Medicare programmer on all of the slave panels.
