Structural framework modeling

Ant-track cube optimized for fault modeling while interpreting

• Ant-track workflow
• Ant-track optimization
• Time slice fault interpretation
• Fault modeling while interpreting
• Horizon modeling in structural framework
Ant-track to Structural framework modeling

Two approaches are suggested in building a structural framework model based on Ant-tracking
1. “Normal” Ant-track workflow
• Precondition the amplitude cube
• Generate an Ant-tracking cube
• Use the Automatic fault extraction process to generate patches
• Filter and evaluate patch sizes and orioentations to identify discontinueties
• Convert fault patches to fault interpretation
• Use fault interpretation (from pathces) to build a Fault framework model
• Do Horizon modeling in the Structural framework

2. Ant-track time-slice interpretation workflow

• Precondition the amplitude cube
• Generate an Ant-tracking cube
• Evaluate dip and azimuth content of Ant- cube to identify discontinuities
• Generate a new Ant-tracking cube with the initial Ant-track cube as input using Stereonet
filtering
• Do Fault framework while interpreting on the Ant-track timeslice
• Do Horizon modeling in the Structural framework
Ant-track volume – Preparation

Pre-condition and generate an Ant-track cube following the recommended workflow

Time-slice display from an Ant-tracking cube

is an excellent way of showing structural
patterns in a 3D seismic volume that in
other ways are not easily seen or is time
consuming to interpret manually.

But are the patterns seen reflecting

discontinuities or “noise”?
Ant-track workflow – Normal procedure

Recommended Ant-track workflow:

Use the Automatic fault extraction process,

filter patches to identify real discontinuities.
Convert to fault interpretation

Fault interpretation can be used

in Fault framework modeling
Ant-track volume – Iteration based on structural information

Evaluate dip and azimuth content of the Ant-track cube

A dip line shows that a lot of sub-horizontal ”noice” exists

in the initial Ant-track cube. An Ant-track iteration using the
stereonet filter will remove non-discontinuity content

The initial Ant-track cube is used as input into generating

a new Ant-track cube filtering out sub-horizontal “ants”
Ant-track volume – Optimized filtered cube

The iterated Ant-track cube with less sub-horizontal info

Time-slice display from the iterated Ant-

tracking cube is excellent to use for Fault
framework modeling as described in the
following

Tweak the parameters to optimize the

generation of the second Ant-track cube
Structural framework modeling – Geometry definition

1. Open the Geometry definition process 2. Select the original amplitude volume and
under Structural framework click on Get geometry from selected

1
Structural framework – Fault framework while interpreting

1. Right click on an Interpretation folder and 3. Position a timeslice for optimal fault
select Insert fault. identification.
2. Then select Fault framework while 4. Activate Seismic interpretation and
interpreting from the same menu interpret the fault on the timeslice

1
Structural framework – Time slice fault interpreting

1. Step down through the ant-track time 3. The modeled fault is an excellent QC
slices and interpreting discontinuities object by playing through the timeslices
2. With Fault framework while and the dip line intersections
interpreting active the fault model is
built during the interpretation process

Structural framework – Fault model

1. Build the fault model by interpreting one 2. The Fault framework while interpreting option
fault at a time is activated for the Interpretation folder, all faults
in that folder will be modeled ”on the fly”

1
Structural framework – Fault model parameters
1. Parameters for each modeled fault is set in 2. Truncations are controlled under Edit relationships
the Fault framework modeling dialog 3. Right click on a modeled fault adds functionality

3
Structural framework – Horizon modeling

1. Insert seismic horizon and interpret (autotracking)

on the amplitude volume

2. Right click on the horizon interpretation and select

Add/update structural framework

2
Note: The Structural framework faults do not act as
‘visible faults’ in the Autotracking parameters. The Fault
interpretation must be displayed to ‘Stop at visible faults’
Structural framework – Horizon modeling

1. Interpret and build the necessary horizon

interpretation into the structural framework

1
Structural framework – Horizon modeling parameters

1. Parameters for each modeled

horizon is set in the Horizon
modeling dialog

2. Any well adjustment and general

settings are controlled from the 1
Common settings tab

1
Structural framework – Horizon modeling zonation

1. Each fault and horizon can be given separate parameters to control distance from input to fault
2. Zonation is built into the structural framework by selecting the Apply geological rules and
create zone model

2
Structural framework – Results

1. Fault, horizons and zones are stored in the Models

pane under the Structural framework name
2. For further property modeling and volume 1
calculation, this model must be converted to a
Corner point grid
