Unit Learning Outcomes

LO1: Use applications of number theory in practical engineering situations.

LO2: Solve systems of linear equations relevant to engineering applications

using matrix methods.

Transferable skills and competencies developed

Computational skills, research skills, mathematical skills, problem solving.

Vocational scenario
Scenario: You are working as a Trainee Electronic/Mechanical Engineer for RCL
Systems Ltd. Your Technical Manager has asked you to learn and apply the
relevance of number theory, complex number theory, de Moivre’s theorem and
2x2, 3x3 matrices application in Engineering context. Furthermore, you also
have to investigate applications of complex numbers in electric circuit analysis and
inverse matrix methods to solve system of linear equations. Hence, you have to
perform following tasks.

Assignment activity and guidance

Task 1

Apply addition and multiplication methods to numbers that are expressed in

different base systems

i) (246.57)8+(357.1)8
ii) (8AB)16+(B78)16
iii)
iv)
v) (6AB)16*(A9)16
vi) (769.E2)16*(8.A)16

Task 2

Solve engineering problems using complex number theory

a) A series circuit consists of a 12 resistor, a coil of inductance 0.1H and a

capacitance of 160F are connected to a source of 200V :
i) State the impedance and admittance in rectangular and Polar form and calculate the
phase angle
ii) State the impedance at resonance in rectangular and polar form
iii)Find the current flowing in the
circuit in rectangular and Polar
form

b) For the circuit shown below derive an expression for the total current (I) flowing
through the circuit:
i)using rectangular form ii) using polar form
Calculate the magnitude and phase angle of the current.
Task 3
Perform arithmetic operations using the polar and exponential form of complex numbers

(a) Perform the two basic operations of multiplication and division to a complex
number in both rectangular and polar form to demonstrate these different
techniques.
Z1 =1+ j 2, Z 2=4− j3 , Z 3=−5− j

Write Z1 , Z 2 and Z3 in polar form and calculate Z, where:

Z3
Z=Z 3 + Z 2 . Z 1−
Z1

i) Rectangular form from start ii) Polar form from start

(b) Evaluate the exponential ¿

(c) Given 𝑧 = 4𝑒1.5−𝑗2, determine ln (z) in polar form.

Task 4

Ascertain the determinant of a given 3x3 matrix.

Calculate the determinant of:
Task 5

Solve a system of three linear equations using Gaussian elimination

The tensions, T1, T2 and T3 in a simple framework are given by the equations:

Determine T1, T2 and T3 using Gaussian elimination.
