Introductory Message

Welcome to General Biology 1!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of

the Schools Division of Aklan and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division
(CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers,
parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace
and time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will
also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge
and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The General Biology 1 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between
you and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The General Biology 1 Activity Sheet is developed to help you

continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material
provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent
learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the
instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This
will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Postulates of the Cell Theory

I. Learning Competency with Code

Explain the postulates of the cell theory STEM_BIO11/12-Ia-c-1

II. Background Information for Learners

All organisms are made up of cells. Cells are the basic unit of life,
sharing many common mechanisms across different classes of organisms
(plants, animals, microorganisms). Between these classes there are also key
differences in cell architecture. Every cell is composed of microscopic parts
called organelles. Organelles are of similar structure and functions but vary
from different types of cells.

There are two major classifications of cells: Prokaryote (single-celled)

and Eukaryote (multicellular). The figure below shows the comparison of the
two major classification of cell.

The cell was first discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665 and can be
found to be described in his book Micrographia. He discovered that a slice of
cork is made up of thousands of tiny compartments. The word cell came from
these compartments called “cellulae” or small rooms which are inhabited by
monks. This theory was further developed through the invention of a
microscope by Anton van Leeuwenhoek.
Animal
The Cell Theory
Plants The two scientists who developed cell theory in 1839 were Theodor
Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleiden. However, many other scientists
like Rudolf Virchow contributed to the theory. It was an important step in the
movement away from spontaneous generation.
The following are the salient features of Modern Cell Theory:
• All organisms are made up of one or more cells.
• Cells are basic unit of structure and functions in living things.
• A cell arises from preexisting cells (attributed to Rudolf Virchow)

The Modern Cell Theory Interpretations

The following are components of current cell theory that are widely
accepted:
▪ One or more cells make up all known living entities.
▪ By division, all live cells develop from pre-existing cells.
▪ In all living species, the cell is the basic structural and
functional unit.
▪ The cumulative activity of separate cells determines an
organism's activity.
▪ Within cells, energy flow (metabolism and biochemistry)
happens.
▪ DNA is present specifically in the chromosome, whereas RNA is
found in the nucleus and cytoplasm of cells.
▪ In creatures of similar species, all cells have a chemical
composition that is nearly identical.

III. Activity Proper

A. Cheek to Cheek…
Comprehending what a cell is and how it looks is an important part of
understanding cell theory. All living things, including plants and animals,
are made up of a variety of cells! Connective, epithelial, muscular, and
nerve cells are only some of the types of cells that grow together to form
tissue! Unfortunately, nerve tissue, connective tissue, and muscle tissue
are difficult to inspect up close without an intrusive procedure.
Fortunately, epithelial cells are abundant in your mouth and can be used
for external examination! The epithelial cells we'll be looking at in this
experiment are called "Stratified Squamous Nonkeratinized Epithelium"
and come from the inside of your cheek.

Materials: toothpick; water; tissue paper; microscope & slide;

cellphone camera
Procedure:
1. Place a drop of water on the slide.
2. Take your toothpick and rub it against the inside of your cheek.
Then take the toothpick and roll it through the drop of water.
3. Angle your slide cover over it, with one edge of the square touching
the slide, then let the cover fall onto the drop of water. Run the
flat side of your fingernail across the cover to remove any air from
beneath it. Use a tissue paper to blot up water that escapes from
beneath the slide cover.

2
4. Place the slide under the microscope. Set your cellphone's
camera lens on top of the microscope eye piece, centering the
view of the microscope in the center of your screen.
5. Zoom in on your phone. If you can't see them yet, search for
some cells! To help find cells, carefully adjust the glass slide to
hunt down your epithelial cells. To help focus you can tap on
your screen (most smartphones have this feature) and make
slight adjustments to the height of the microscope. (Loosen the
set screw, then make fine adjustments with the platform's
height adjusting knob to find the focus, tightening the set screw
once you can see image?). Be sure not to confuse air bubbles for
the cells. See sample image below:

Guide Questions:
1. Using a search engine or biology dictionary, define Stratified
Squamous Nonkeratinized Epithelium.

Squamous:
Nonkeratinized:
Epithelium:

2. What type of cells do you see on the microscope? Eukaryotic

or prokaryotic? Haploid or diploid?

3. What cell postulate can be observed in the experiment?

Explain the postulate.

B. Cell Theory… What are some of the evidences that proved the postulates
of cell theory? Illustrate with a drawing/picture and provide a short
explanation on the box bellow each postulate. You may use varying
materials.
