1-Read the following passage and answer the questions given below. 10m
1. Article 48A of the Constitution of India provides that the state shall endeavour to the
protect and improve
PM inboxthe environment and safeguard forests and wildlife of the country. But what
causes endless anguish is the fact that laws are neither respected nor enforced in India.
A recently
report of our Parliament's estimates Committee has highlighted the near catastrophic
depletion of India's forests over the last four decades, India, according to reliable data, is
losing its forests at the rate of 3.7 million acres a year. Large areas, officially designated
as forest land, "are already virtually treeless".
2. The actual loss of forests is estimated to be about 8 times the rate indicated by
government statistics. There can be no doubt that the growth of world population is one
of the strongest factors distorting the future of human society. It took mankind more than
a million years to reach the first billion. That was the world population
(1)around the year 1800. By the year 1900, a second billion was added, and the 20th
century has added another 3.7 billion. The present world population (as of August 2016)
is estimated at 7.4 billion. Every 4 days the world population increases by I million.
3. The rich get richer and the poor beget children, which condemns them to remain poor.
More children do not mean more workers, merely more people without work. It is not
suggested that human beings be treated like cattle and compulsorily sterilised. But there
is no alternative to voluntary family planning without introducing an element of coercion.
The choice is really between control of population and perpetuation of poverty.
4. For the first time in human history, we see a transcending concern-the survival not just
of the people but of the planet. We have begun to take a holistic view of the very basis of
our existence. The environmental problem does not necessarily signal our demise; it is
our passport for the future. The emerging new world vision has ushered in the era of
responsibility. It is a holistic view, an ecological view, seeing the world as an

2-Read the passage and answer the questions that follow: 10m
1. With novel Coronavirus spreading rapidly all over the country, there are only three states
right now, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, that have less than 1,000
people infected with the disease.
2. Lakshadweep, of course, still hasn’t reported even a single case till now, the only region
in India entirely free of the epidemic.
3. Otherwise, even the relatively smaller states now have significantly large spread of the
disease. Goa, for example, has seen more than 7,000 of its people infected by the virus till
now. Tripura has over 5,500 cases, while Manipur has more than 3,000, and Nagaland a
little less than 2,500. Puducherry has more than 4,000 cases, while even Daman and Diu
has over 1,300 people infected.
4. And in each of these states, the numbers are rising at a fast pace, at a rate higher than
the national level. The infections had initially reached these states in the first and second
week of May, when the lockdown was relaxed for the first time to enable people stuck in
different parts of the country to return to their native places.
5. After a period of very slow growth, the number of cases have begun to rise rapidly in the
last one month. In Goa, for example, the total number of infected people has nearly doubled
in the last 15 days. Same has happened in Puducherry, as well.
6. Tuesday was one of those rare occasions when the number of active cases in the
country, those who are yet to recover from the disease, went down compared to the
previous day. That is because the number of recoveries, combined with the number of
deaths, exceeded the new cases that were detected on Tuesday.
7. With over 52,500 new cases detected in the country, the total number of infections
crossed 19 lakh, out of `which 12.82 lakh people have recovered from the disease. The
number of dead is now close to 40,000.
8. The number of recoveries on Tuesday was the highest-ever for a single day. More than
51,700 people were declared to have been recovered. Three days earlier, the number of
recoveries had crossed 50,000 for the first time, but in the next two days the number had
fallen to much lower levels.
